Now, the only caveat is you have to watch for burn-out of genre. If you find you prioritize and have yourself playing 4 shooters in a row, you might want to break this priority list by subbing in a platformer or something instead, so you don't get burned out just playing 1 type of game. That way it keeps things fresh and keeps you going.
If you're doing a lot of RPGs like me, this is as good as it's going to get. Switch subgenres at the slightest pretense - strategy to turn-based to real-time to Western - but whatever you do, don't put it down. That's how you got into this problem in the first place.

Almost an update. I got to the final level of Brutal Legend but got my ass kicked and turned the game off. I'll see if I can finish it tonight, and then maybe finish off the last level of World at War before Ratchet and Clank arrives.
I either need to buy a laptop or bring my PS3 over to work with me because these 8 days on site are just devoid of any backlog progress besides stuff on the PSP.
I'm not exactly looking to burn through Motorstorm Arctic Edge too, more of an on-off arrangement similar to how I played Wipeout Pulse. Ended up pouring close to 20 hours into that, up to the last Phantom Cell. Very satisfying game experience
edit: Does buying a laptop to get through some PC games constitute as FallingOffTheWagon? :P

Made it through a season and won a Super Bowl in Madden 10, my goal to scratch it off my list. I'll still play it when in the mood, but it is no longer part of my backlog!
However, going to Frys, then seeing DJ Hero set up, then playing it, then buying it, most definitely constitutes !FallingOffTheWagon...
I can't help it. I'm weak. And my wife is an enabler. NOT GOOD.
Since I'm pretty sure the only reason my fiancee let me pre-order the White edition of AC2 is because she wants the bag it comes with, I'm in the same boat.
The frequency of this !fallofthewagon thing should illustrate why this challenge is kind of ridiculous. You should be able to reward yourself for making progress, but in a realistic manner.
On another note, I'm getting quite a few laughs watching you all succumb to your gaming compulsions.
Also added Super Mario Sunshine to my list of incomplete games.

I half considered the Modern Warfare sale on Steam.
But it wasn't that great of a deal, and 2 is coming out anyway so everyone will just play that.
In the meantime, still no progress. Well, some forward movement on Goo. I got distracted by League of Legends (which of course is unbeatable). I only have the last mission on Dawn of War 2 before the campaign is done.
Anyone know how long it will take me on normal difficulty? I have limited play times and don't want to get into it then have to back out in the middle of my game.

I'd say go with Killzone and mix it up with Wipeout. They're my two favourite games on the PSP so it's hard to go wrong there! I recommend picking up the Icarus DLC pack too if you don't mind dabbling off the wagon because I reckon the tracks that it adds are the best of the 4 DLC packs and the ship itself is one of the best in the game.

DLC isn't counted, so he can buy the DLC packs without falling off the wagon.
I'm in a bind - I'm pretty sure that within a couple of months, maybe even sooner, I'll be buying a gaming PC, which I haven't had in a couple of years (though not only for gaming, just because I feel incomplete without a decent PC). I'm going to have about 5 games that I immediately want, and they aren't expensive because they're pretty old by game standards (like Crysis). This is going to be irritating. Guess I'll have to wipe as many off my backlog as possible to make me feel a bit better about it.

Funnily enough last night I pulled Jeanne D'Arc out of my PSP catalogue as the next game that I intend to start working through, I'm pretty sure this means that I'm obligated to suggest that you should do the same--or something.
You guys are funny. Forcing yourself to play games when you'd much rather be playing other games. I play games I want to play. If I don't want to play a game I own, I won't own it for long.
What? Only games we want to play are on the backlog. If we'd rather be playing other games we would... no one is forcing us to do this. Believe it or not, it's... fun?

Sorry. I was being a bit sarcastic, but I figure if you wanted to play these games, you would have already.
Hot damn it's good so far. I also bought the strategy guide, and I'm making no bones about following it so I can enjoy the game without worrying about spending time hunting down every last hidden corner of the map.

I think it's more ADD than anything else. It's like leaving a good movie to go watch another good movie because it came out while you were in the middle of watching the first.
I have a lot of RPGs on my list because I get 50% into one, stop playing it for a year, then start over because I forgot the story. Repeat this over several years and that's why I've got games like Chrono Cross and Mario RPG on my backlog. Amazing games, but my ADD and consumerism have prevented me from enjoying them fully.
Truth be told I'm enjoying Paper Mario as much as any new game I've bought in the past year.
I've also yet to fail. Though that mostly has to do with being utterly obsessed with Borderlands the past week. But now that I have been playing that torchlight demo... urgh. I WILL RESIST YOU.
On to Dead Space now. Will probably just start a new game, as I am stuck on my hard run.

So do you only ever own 1 game?

Yeah, part of the reason I'm doing this is because I have games that were great, and I would love to replay them. However, I feel like I shouldn't, because I have games I haven't even beaten once, so I feel like I should play those instead. From there, I fall into the same issues that Doc described. I will say I do at least load up and play every game I own, I just don't get around to beating them, or getting more than an hour or 2 in, in most cases.
Also, in case anyone sees me load up the L4D2 demo, yes, I do now own that. My fiance bought it for me for my Birthday, as it comes out the day after. She was super nice, and got it for me early so I could enjoy the demo in the meantime.
What? Only games we want to play are on the backlog. If we'd rather be playing other games we would... no one is forcing us to do this. Believe it or not, it's... fun?
Sorry. I was being a bit sarcastic, but I figure if you wanted to play these games, you would have already.
See, you have it wrong. You think it's about going back to play games we don't want to play. But that's not the issue. The issue is having too many good games to play and not enough time.
So by attacking the backlog and not buying more good games we want to play, we're giving ourselves the chance to enjoy these excellent games by not clogging the pipes with even more games we want to play.
Most of us didn't gain these games in our backlog because we stopped playing them due to disinterest; more like we stopped playing because we were too busy playing something else and before we got to the next one another great one came out. See the problem is there are too many games we want to play; not too many games we don't want to play as you suggest.
"But so why did you buy another new game before finishing the one you're on?"
Well that's the issue and that's what's being addressed by attacking the backlog and not buyin new games. However, in answer to that question, it's actually easy for some of us to get excited for "new" games and new experiences; and tell ourselves, "Well, I still haven't had a chance to play Brutal Legend since I bought it during the B2G1F deal a couple of weeks ago, but DRAGON AGE is out! I've GOT to play that!" and by the time you finish Dragon Age, the holidays are here and your family gets you Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, because you're a gamer and they know you want these. And so you finish Dragon Age and now you can either play MW2 or L4d2 or try and attack Brutal Legend, but no matter which you pick, by the time you finish playing that, you still have 2 unplayed games and maybe a month has passed and you already have Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2 and coming out... and the process repeats. MW2 and L4D2 and Brutal Legend aren't in the backlog because of disinterest but they are there because you want to play them.
Yes it's a matter of not buying games when you have unplayed games, but it's surprisingly easy to get stuck in this rut, especially when you dont have a toooooon of free time in your life.
I don't have too much on my plate, but being a completionist dick like I am, it will take a while. I'm gonna go ahead and throw MW2 on the list since I technically already bought it.

I have to agree with Slash, the backlog is a collection of games I wanted to play, but with only so many hours available after work and on the weekends, it's easy for then to fall between the cracks. The most common victims are RPGs. I've mentally blocked out new games this holiday, seeing as by the time I get through the majority of my current games, most will be easily had on the cheap.
The only temptation is my wife wanting DJ Hero, I'm actually glad it's $120, great reason not to buy.
You guys are funny. Forcing yourself to play games when you'd much rather be playing other games. I play games I want to play. If I don't want to play a game I own, I won't own it for long.
There may be some truth to this for obsessive-compulsive types, especially for trying to get 100% in a game, whatever that means. There is also a little compulsion to play things that other people have talked up a lot. And finally you have to balance between ADD jumping around games for a few hours and sitting down to get the full experience.
One of my strategies that I posted earlier was to not buy games at release to help avoid early hype and letdown. You miss some of the buzz but improve the odds that you'll want to finish a game; I'd say I've had a handful I toughed out just to finish, and a handful I quit because they were too tedious.
!Update 3/38
I just beat Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Great game, but holy crap did the last fight take forever. I guess now for portables I will concentrate on Rock Band Unplugged.
Beat GTA IV, finally. I've owned it since release day. First GTA I've actually finished the story of! That last mission is balls hard.
Oh, and I almost forgot. The only things I have left to unlock in RB2 are insane metal songs that I'll never play. I'm considering it finished for the purposes of this backlog.
So, !Update 4/26.
EDIT: I also just realized that this puts me in the lead, percentage-wise. Go me!
!Update 1/45 I beat Monkey Island Special Edition last night. Missing a couple of achievements for various things you can do during the game. I may go back for those eventually, but not anytime soon. Probably start on my evil ending run of Demon's Souls next, or maybe Batman.
@Lunker, Ikaruga has multiplayer over live, doesn't it? It isn't (but should be) on my backlog list. I put it down when I realized how awful I am at vscrollers.
Yes it's a matter of not buying games when you have unplayed games, but it's surprisingly easy to get stuck in this rut, especially when you dont have a toooooon of free time in your life.
For me it's definitely the sales factor; I play games really slowly, but I also can't stand passing up a good deal so when I see one for a newer game, I'll jump on it, even if I haven't finished what I'm currently playing. It's also a dash of good ol' fashioned gamer ADD, but the main reason I'm zeroing in on my backlog is because I need to pay for school, so to prevent myself from being swayed by newer games I'm just making it a point to revisit stuff I've already bought.

If you're doing a lot of RPGs like me, this is as good as it's going to get. Switch subgenres at the slightest pretense - strategy to turn-based to real-time to Western - but whatever you do, don't put it down. That's how you got into this problem in the first place.

If its got Achievements, aim for a certain percentage. For example, in Left 4 Dead I stopped when I had two thirds of the Achievements.
If there's some kind of in-game reward, aim for that. For example, in Peggle I stopped when I had completed two thirds of the challenges in the game.
I don't know about Animal Crossing, but there's probably a clear point when you can say "I've played this to death".

I did beat Katamari Forever, though, so it's not all bad.

My anti-drug? No job.

Sorry. I was being a bit sarcastic, but I figure if you wanted to play these games, you would have already.

I finally started it yesterday.

On to Dead Space now. Will probably just start a new game, as I am stuck on my hard run.
So do you only ever own 1 game?
Your kid is the best
Also, in case anyone sees me load up the L4D2 demo, yes, I do now own that. My fiance bought it for me for my Birthday, as it comes out the day after. She was super nice, and got it for me early so I could enjoy the demo in the meantime.

One of my strategies that I posted earlier was to not buy games at release to help avoid early hype and letdown. You miss some of the buzz but improve the odds that you'll want to finish a game; I'd say I've had a handful I toughed out just to finish, and a handful I quit because they were too tedious.
I just beat Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Great game, but holy crap did the last fight take forever. I guess now for portables I will concentrate on Rock Band Unplugged.
Go me!
@Lunker, Ikaruga has multiplayer over live, doesn't it? It isn't (but should be) on my backlog list. I put it down when I realized how awful I am at vscrollers.
