See, you have it wrong. You think it's about going back to play games we don't want to play. But that's not the issue. The issue is having too many good games to play and not enough time.
<snip>
Yes it's a matter of not buying games when you have unplayed games, but it's surprisingly easy to get stuck in this rut, especially when you dont have a toooooon of free time in your life.
Yep, this is exactly the issue ... so many good games to play, taking this challenge is a fun way to remind myself that I already have a lot of games I want to play, and don't need to indulge in another B2G1 sale.
I say it is a fun way to do it because tracking progress and seeing games get ticked off is enjoyable for me, probably in the same way that playing with levels and stats in Disgaea is fun for me
My backlog is really the product of the following factors: spending most of 2007 in Korea, away from my consoles (I had a small backlog before this, but this is where it grew), getting engaged in 2007 and married this year, and what seems like a recent increase in B2G1 sales and incredible Steam sales.
As big as my backlog is, I don't regret a single purchase (the only game this gen that I regretted buying was Soul Calibur Legends, which has long since been traded-in), and I am looking forward to spending time enjoying everyone one of the games on my list.
Yeah I totally understand getting stuck in a trap of buying more games than you have time for. For me, it happened after the Wii came out and I started seeing a ton of GC games I always wanted to play hit clearout prices. Alluva sudden I had Killer 7, Odama, Star Fox Assault and a bunch of others in addition to the new Wii stuff.
I eventually caught up, but now that I have a Wii, DS and 360, I've had to force myself to only buy games I have time for. This is tough at first, but after that initial remorse of not playing the newest shiny thing with everyone else on these forums, it fades fast. Sure, it means I have never experienced Fallout 3, and will likely stay away from Borderlands, because these seem like massive time sinks, but I always justify it by knowing I'll be able to catch up once the next gen begins. I figure there are so many games I am denying myself now, I won't have to upgrade to whatever the next big system is because there's still so much life left in these ones.
If I do buy a game and find myself wishing I could just get through it to move onto something else, then I figure I won't care too much if I just quit, cut my losses and got back to playing something I enjoy, but I've already completed, or if there is something out new that I want, I'll switch my focus that way.
Basically, it comes down to will power. That's pretty much what this thread is about. I guess I do have a backlog, but it's of games I intend to buy instead of ones I already have.
Your Street Fighter IV goal you should be able to knock out in a couple days. It's not hard, just tedious.
it's even quicker if you set it on the easiest setting and then set it to 1-round matches. That way you can just get a few specials in, block the rest of the round, and win on the first match and move on.
I have no will power.
Here's I bought in this last month alone, and the reason I got a advance from my credit card so I could pay car insurance, pefft priorities, who needs em:
Brutal legend. (Just introduced to the gloomy kids 50% ?)
NHL '10 (Never Ending)
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. ( 1 level to go )
Borderlands ( On my second play through though)
Forza 3 (Got it yesterday)
Uncharted 2 (Near the end)
So although I've been buying a lot, I've been playing them most of the way through. My problem is I can't wait to play a game. And if it's a game I know I'll like I refuse to rent it first.

This does make the rounds much easier and quicker.
Unfortunately I didn't think about that until after playing through story mode several times. :P

Brutal Legend complete! I'll go back eventually and do all the side quests and stuff, but the story is done, so I'm scrubbing it from my list.
I went to do a bit more of my littlebigplanet progress (I had about 3/4 of the disc levels done) and... corrupted save. Fuck. Well, it's fun enough that I'll replay them. I'm taking GTA 4 off my list too. After a while the game grates on me, and I don't have the willpower to sit through it.

I just beat the second course in Golf: Tee it Up. Was +1 so I didn't get an achievement, but for 200 points (last year's Christmas sale) I think I got my money's worth out of it.
I don't have a real update, just wanted to post to say I'm still working on Fallovt 3. I'm in no rush to get through the game, and my time is limited, so it's going to be a while, but I'm definitely sticking with it. Otherwise, I mostly play Halo multi (might be able to work on the Legendary run at the end of the week), although I did start up on my RE4 Wii goal for Halloween. I think, mostly, taking this challenge is just adding another (unnecessary) incentive to play through Fallovt at the moment, which is cool. Like I mentioned, I may pick up a game sometime soon to play with a friend online, but I pretty much have no worries about giving up.

So, had a meeting today with my surgeon's nurse for some pre-op paperwork, and was informed that I am not to drive for 3 weeks following the surgery on Wednesday. Also that I should be avoiding any bending and twisting beyond what is necessary to put on my clothes and tie my shoes. And also that I cannot shower until the 6th day after the surgery o_O o_O
So I should have levels of free time surpassing even a high school student on summer break seeing as how I can't even leave our condo other than for the required/desired walking unless someone else drives me. With that in mind, my goals for the backlog just went way up for November. They're also going to be a bit more console-centric since my couch is a heck of a lot more comfortable than this crappy desk chair.
My new goals for November are: complete all PSN titles; complete my Tekken 6 goals by tomorrow; finish both PS2 titles on my list; Platinum both Uncharted games; finish Batman: AA; finish Infamous; finish Dead Space; finish Valkyria Chronicles; at least 2 Borderlands playthroughs; finish Resistance 2; finish Riddick: Dark Athena; finish World in Conflict; and get a bunch of trophies in SingStar and Rock Band when I need a break from other games.
Also work on the nice reading backlog I just built up for myself since I know man cannot live on video games alone, and burn through as many Netflix Blu-ray titles as possible. Oh, and try to cook enough that I don't get to know too many delivery drivers on a first name basis :P
Ketar, will are going to destroy this thread by the end of November. Hope you have a speedy recovery mate
I've been neglecting my PSP backlog the past few days while gorging on other hobbies, but I should be able to put another hour into Motorstorm AE. It'll be good to finally hunt down some emblems too now that I know how to get them after reading, of all things, the manual.

My advice - Free play in Wreckreation mode, easy, 5 laps, first few laps drive around looking for odd places that could hide them (they tend to put them in places that you won't see driving normally, either because the camera is pointing away from them or they are in an area with jumbled logos that hides them), then the last couple of laps looking on the ceilings of tunnels, behind you under a ramp as you make a jump, or on the ground as you make a jump.
Also remember not every track has them - 20 of 24 tracks have an emblem (there's 12 tracks, but the reverse tracks have different emblems). I've found about 7 I think, and it's getting a bit irritating already.

One of my rituals of buying a new game is to read the manual. Not because I necessarily feel like I need to in order to play the game, but because I just like to do so for some reason. Read the manual, check out the quick story backdrops, maybe character bios, or move sets or move lists, just whatever.
It's great sometimes too when you find a truly great manual. Like the Contra 4 manual. So awesome.

I did this with the Homeworld manual. But I never stopped reading it. It was like an awesome sci fi book.
I've been in backlog denial, taking the position that I wasn't as bad off as some of you, so I was just fine. I know that's not true now. I've completed a couple of games recently, but that was before I decided to sign up. Here we go:

I did that because I started doing this backlog challenge because of this thread, I just never got around to making an actual list.
Anyway, I think I'll tackle Mirror's Edge next...
I beat some games before signup, too. I resisted the urge to put my 3 or 4 recently completed games on the list. Congrats, nonetheless.
Also, in going through my games I came across Mirror's Edge and considered putting it on my backlog, even though I've beaten it badly a few times. Great game. I am never, ever, going to get through all the speed runs, unfortunately (unless I YouTube). Mirror's edge is short, fun, and unique. I might suggest it as something to pull out if you get stuck with a string of long or more "generic" games, just to get the joices flowing.
Also, I'm trying to not wagon-fall after watching some DJ Hero videos. How fast can I go from "that looks dumb" to "collector's edition, please?" Very fast if I'm not careful.

That was the manliest manual ever.
I used to be a religious manual-reader, though that was primarily due to the classic "reading the manual in my parents' backseat on the way home from Toys R Us, squinting to read it in the headlights of the car behind us" maneuver. Nowadays, though, I tend not to because most games have sufficient in-game tutorials and, particularly with RPGs, reading the manual often spoils a lot of plot and character reveals. I tend to avoid media on upcoming games for the same reason: I like to go in completely blind.
Anyway, Mirror's Edge is a great quick game to run through; one of my GOTYs from 2008, and I still have plenty of speed runs to work on but I've beaten the game twice or three times now. The campaign took me about 7 hours or so, so three or four nights of gameplay, and once you're done with that you'll probably figure out whether you like the game enough to go back for time trials and speed runs.
Currently, I'm working on getting through a second run of Prince of Persia 2K8 so that I can try the new Epilogue, and I also just got Valkyria Chronicles (aka the reason I borrowed my brother's PS3) yesterday. I've only gotten to install it so far. :P

Yea, I find I do this too. My wife laughs at me every time she asks, "Aren't you going to play your new game now?" and I reply, "No, I need to finish the manual first." Of course, most manuals take all-of-one minute to read through now. I miss the days of epic manuals, especially those that PC games used to have. Jane's combat sim games that had extensive manuals detailing every piece of military hardware in the game, Civ manuals that were a nice history lesson, etc.
I think this ritual started for me when I was young and would get a new NES game (either on Christmas morning or on rare occasions from a store). I'd be so anxious to play, but all I could do during the morning xmas family time or drive home was read the manual.
Thanks for the info on Mirror's Edge, guys. I actually started it last night and got hooked. I'm loving it so far. I'm also glad to hear that it's ~7 hours or so because, well, at this point in my life 7-12 hours is about right for a game for me. And since I'm working on the backlog this will hopefully get played right quick.
But yeah manuals, I always read them before playing the game. Not because I need to learn how to play the game beforehand, but because I like to see what they have, whether it's back story or character bios or neat tricks or enemy descriptions or move lists or whatever. Also fun to see if they include any kind of art or funny or interesting writing. Unfortunately the past couple of generations, manuals have been getting shorter and crappier. Some manuals are like 4 pages long and black and white. Like Ureshii said, it's pretty bad for PC games. Some of them used to be epic, but now I'm lucky if I can at least get a mere insert with the controls on it. Oh well! :P

Now for some Mirror's edge...
I loved Mirror's Edge's campaign so much that I went back and replayed on Hard almost as soon as I finished. My first run was Normal with no guns, and the second was Hard with guns. I personally thought the no-gun gameplay added a lot to the game, but people's opinions vary. The game could have used a significantly better melee combat tutorial; there's a lot of awesome moves that I used all the time, like the wallrun-kick-instant disarm, or the slide kick-groin kick-slide kick combo, but it took me dicking around in one of the later levels for about an hour trying to kill all of the cops before the combat felt good.
And since DLC is sanctioned in the regular Backlog rules, if you like the time trial aspect of the game, the Pure Time Trials DLC pack is amazing and brutally difficult.

I had alot of fun with it through story mode, and I even got through the whole thing without firing a weapon once...but after beating it...I just lost my desire to keep playing any longer.
I wanted Mirror's Edge when I bought my PS3, but then I played the demo and lost my boner for it when I realized I sucked at it.
I had trouble playing this on a console. But for some reason playing on the PC I'm actually blazing through it with ease.
I don't know what the difference is. I thought I'd haev preferred this kind of game with a gamepad. But playing this on the PC, maybe it's psychological I dunno, I'm having a much easier time controlling it and making Faith do what I need her to do.
Beat Dry Dry Ruins in Paper Mario last night. Fun times.
You know I've actually Game Over'd twice in this game. I think I might be terrible at it. When you're up against 4 guys who each do 2 damage and they all get to go at once it kind of sucks. Also I'm awful at timing the defense thing right.
I tried to play Mirror's Edge, but I got to one part in a mall where, no matter what I did, I would be shot to death. Even following videos on YouTube and mimicing them, I'd end up dead. After a few hours, I gave up in frustration, and traded it on Goozex.
!Update 5/38
So I was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Rock Band Unplugged. I didn't realize I was so close to beating it. I'm sure I'll keep coming back to play songs on it, but I can definitely say that I've been through the story (at least as much as what interests me - I have no desire to play PSP long enough to complete the endless setlist).

That's the part I talked about earlier, re: learning combat. :P It's a bit of a stopgap, but yeah, once you know what to do, you can bypass all of the cops and run straight across the top. The key is that section where you have to wallrun, hop to a hanging bar and then jump onto a scaffolding—you can aim while wallrunning toward the middle of the bar. If you just wallrun to the bar, then stop and try to shimmy over to the middle, you'll get gunned down in no time.

That is the part. I did not shimmy. I would die while on the scaffolding every time. Every YouTube vid showed people just running across, and I did everything the same (as best I could tell), and yet, I'd die before reaching the last jump.
@Lunker, Ikaruga has multiplayer over live, doesn't it? It isn't (but should be) on my backlog list. I put it down when I realized how awful I am at vscrollers.
It sure does, but I've never touched it—I have a hard enough time surviving by myself without having to worry about other people breaking my combo streaks and sending bullets my way. If you're having trouble, don't feel ashamed about turning continues on; it's off by default and you won't be able to post main leaderboard scores, but the game is retardedly difficult to one-credit. The best I got on the GC version was when I was able to beat it with only two continues, and that took a ton of practice and memorization.
Also, to whomever recommended Jeanne D'Arc as my next PSP target, I'm giving it a whirl. I feel so bad about leaving that barely touched, but my love of Layton reminded me that Level 5 also did Jeanne, so I'm giving it a whirl. Having that on PSP and also trying Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 might break my tactical brain, but it might also keep me in an SRPG mindset.
I sold off all my console games earlier this year, but I still have PC games lying around on discs and on my Steam account. I need something to help me wind down after the day, so I've decided to take a crack at these during my off-hours. A few rules when I was making this list:
Only games I purchased — No freeware.
Only games with singleplayer campaigns — No offline bot matches.
No RTSes — I just don't have the patience for them (three exceptions: Myth I, Myth II, and Sacrifice because they all rule and don't really play like RTSes).
Level packs are optional — Beating the core game counts as completed (level packs noted with parentheses).

I haven't bought a game in months, so hopefully I won't be tempted to buy any new ones while I'm working on this.
iFellOffTheWagon(kinda). I had a $10 off credit from amazon that expired 10/31/09, and on the 29th they were selling Borderlands for $53.99, so I figured I'd buy that for myself for the future. It arrived and I wasn't going to tell you guys, but I gave in. Still on the shelf all shrink wrapped, beckoning me. I just couldn't let $10 and a sale go to waste when I was planning on buying it when I finished the backlog anyway.

Here we go:

Woah.
You can't put beaten games in your sign up post and call it progress!

Steam ID: slashx000______Twitter: @bill_at_zeboyd______ Facebook: Zeboyd Games

You know I've actually Game Over'd twice in this game. I think I might be terrible at it. When you're up against 4 guys who each do 2 damage and they all get to go at once it kind of sucks. Also I'm awful at timing the defense thing right.
Bought Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story, also nulled some games, because I'm never going to play them.
All right, I've decided to do this thing.
I sold off all my console games earlier this year, but I still have PC games lying around on discs and on my Steam account. I need something to help me wind down after the day, so I've decided to take a crack at these during my off-hours. A few rules when I was making this list:
