Mirror's Edge
Mirror's Edge is a first-person 'action adventure' game by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE), focusing on a so-called 'Runner', Faith and her simian ability to jump, swing, shimmy, slip and slide across rooftops, down elevator shafts and through vents, as she uncovers and hopefully foils yet another dastardly plot as has been perpetrated by the totalitarian regime du jour, in one of the brightest, shiniest and prettiest cities of the universe. Also, giant rats.
This will probably be a fairly commentary-based, didactic Let's Play although I'm open to changing it as it's my first LP so I'm still getting a feel for how to do them. Therefore comments, criticism and suggestions are all welcome, of course.
I hope you will enjoy the videos!
WORKAROUNDS:
Sound: For whatever reason, ME doesn't like balancing its sound properly on some systems, and you get a vastly disproportionate volume of street noise coupled with very quiet music and speech. This is a problem associated with Hardware Acceleration for sound, and you can fix it on Windows quite simply by going to your Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, then clicking the Audio tab, go find Advanced on Playback and then under the Performance tab pulling the slider to Basic or Off.
PhysX: If you have an NVidia card, you will be able to run PhysX in ME, enabling a fair few extra objects and particle effects in-game. However, the .dlls included with the game tend to screw around with this and can basically cause the game to try and software render the PhysX. To try and fix this, you can go into your Mirror's Edge directory and then into the Binaries directory. There are two files here, PhysXCore.dll and PhysXDevice.dll. If you change the file extension of one or both of these (I use .bak), they should no longer be loaded and ME should try and let your card do the heavy lifting, instead of your CPU. On XP with a 8800, I have the PhysXCore file changed. Occasionally you might get a PhysX related crash in-game but I've found this to be fairly rare (there are hotspots).

I noticed that. I watched the actual game intro and thought "damn that's quiet" and then the in-game audio was actually audible. A little goofy says I.
By the way, the one part in the tutorial where you have to jump off the board and immediately turn around to the scaffolding behind you, good work on nailing it on the first shot. No matter how far I got in this game, when I go back to that tutorial spot I screw it up a lot.
I liked the part where you pointed out the cop cars down below, and the multiple paths you can take. Might want to focus on this more. You missed showing the helicopter arriving earlier, which ties everything together. Might consider editing together more than one run, so you can demo how to take some of the alternate paths, one of the most fun parts of the game. Sometimes I was blown away when people described how they hopped through a level completely differently than me.
Napp started one, but it was put on hold (AFAIK).
I know I'll make one.
Some day.
I'm rather enjoying it so far, Bethryn. I'll give ya better feedback later

I think Nappucino quit because he was doing a blind run and it wasn't working out well. Didn't help that he's colorblind and couldn't see red or something.

I feel terrible for laughing at this, but that's awesome.
I'm not sure I'll be doing multiple runs but I probably will point out some of the different pathways and give a run of the more interesting ones when there's no pressure on.
Cheers for all the comments guys, much appreciated.
Anyway, good stuff Bethryn!
Anyway, the second set is uploaded (second two videos are still processing for quality as of writing). It's mostly pointing out a lot of the visual foreshadowing in the game, although I was going to say quite a bit more at the end, but those damned SWATs decided to turn up about half a minute before they usually do. I may well record that bit again on Play Chapter, this time fighting the SWATs and then showing the last few visual bits and bobs and stick at the beginning of the next set.
Any opinions on how I'm showing alternative routes would be welcome since I'm not sure whether it's a good way of doing it.
The next level is a lot more relaxed so there won't be the pressure/pleasure on me to keep up the pace so much, so there'll be rather more talking in between the running. And I'll try to stop talking over Merc, but the guy is such a damn chatterbox! :x
Anyway, hope you enjoy, feedback appreciated!
im in
Also once you finish please include a lets play of the time trail bonus maps :P
I don't know about your video editing software or skills, but I'd still suggest splicing in some of the cooler alternate paths. Or you could even simply freeze-frame on a shot, and MS Paint in some little (red) arrows to point out where else you could go. Madden style.
Some screenshots/pauses when you're pointing out signs so we have time to fully appreciate them would be cool, too. I know I spent a lot of time reading the ads and such in the mall. Might want to take the time to watch all of the little videos/reports, you ran out in the middle of that one in the Eye building, that you were commenting on. Reading off the signs and stuff, or the logo on the chopper, helps too. Pausing/zooming in could help more.
The cutscenes and voices in general are still a bit quiet. But, the subtitles help there. More of your commentary during the cutscenes would be good. We want to follow the story, but sometimes it's a little too quiet. And leaves obvious places for jokes, too. The subtitles will help if you accidentally talk over something, we can just pause and squint a bit to catch up.
Hope I'm not being too critical or suggesting things you couldn't possibly do. Not quite sure how all this works, just bringing up anything I notice, since you wanted ideas for your first time. You already said you might replay chapters and record chunks to comment on, and that works. I'm also always glad when someone comments on the same things I notice...the Matrix cop, Celeste's weird hair, the donuts...
I propose we use MEEM. See, cause it's a mirror image of ME. See what I did there? Then we'll know it's Mirror's Edge instead of Mass Effect.
With alternative paths, at the moment, I'm choosing what I consider to be the coolest paths, and pointing out the more boring ones. What I'm planning to do now in sections where I'm not being horribly chased is possibly just do a bit of one path, then go back and do my preferred path, where possible.
I'll try and do more detail on the posters and things I point out, yup; I think I should have a lot of reaction time spare for it so I'll try doing that.
At the moment, I don't speak during cutscene speech and I try to not speak over Merc (but he has no such qualms when I'm talking 8( ). If most viewers think I should talk over them then I'll go for it, but at the moment I'm trying not to (maybe for small sarcastic jibes at some of the writing I'll make more exceptions >_>).
Thanks for the feedback, I'll try and make sure there's enough observation time on things I'm pointing out in particular.
That all sounds good. Regarding cutscene speech and incidental in-game speech, I wouldn't mind the odd sarcastic jibe, but I do prefer it when the game characters are given their chance to speak, especially considering I haven't played this game and want to know where the story is going. It's surprising what you miss in a throwaway line from a character, be it storyline plot or just an insight into what that character is like.
Anyway, this is a very enjoyable LP so far. I'll look forward to the next update.
Yeah... I loved the game but it just didn't love me back. As it stands, I wholeheartedly support this LP
And Jacknife is totally a dick. With a sweet jacket.
Thanks for the support, it means a lot. ^^
Good to know that there's still life here. We'll be waiting.
really good rolling commentary too, which must be god damn tricky, so bring some more beth
I'm really enjoying this LP and I'll be damned if I don't see this game going cheap in every shop that sells games in my home town. At this rate, I don't think it'll be long before a copy of this finds its way into my collection.
Looking forward to the next set.
This is one of those games that is as good as the player who plays it. I wanted this game when I picked up a next gen system, but then I played the demo and I was terrible at it and I lost my boner for it. This LP will suffice.

If I find a cheap copy of it, I'll have to pick it up. I'm more likely to stick with it and play through if I have the PC version.
Kind of wished I'd played earlier though. I heard such awful things about it shortly after release, that I wrote it off. This is actually the first gameplay I've seen.
I assume he's using a gamepad, because keyboard and mouse would be unwieldy, no?
