Just be sure to replace the buttons as well if you go with a MadCatz SE stick. The default buttons aren't that great. Then again, I don't like the FS3's buttons either.
Those % images seem so silly to me. No one goes "ARG, I couldn't do that move because I was too slow getting out of this huge 18% neutral position!" You still have to move the stick the same amount to hit the directions, the switches didn't move at all. The difference in them is that with the square you can jam it into the corners without any chance of missing, like doing those charge moves while riding along the bottom or back edges without any chance of over shooting your corners.
For qcf moves you shouldn't be riding the edge on a square gate so it's not like you're taking full advantage of that increased % anyway.
The bottom line is, square: good for hitting corners and easier charge moves (like buffalo headbutt while maintaining a back charge).
octo: good for qcf characters if you like riding the edges. Also good for hitting up/down/back/forward for moves like chun's headstomp.
It's really a preference thing. Ignore those stupid % pictures.
Oh yeah, don't get a FS3 if you want to do some modding.
Not unless you want to do some soldering.
It's a pretty good budget stick though.
Eh, I'm not a fan of my FS3. But you're right, it's too much of a hassle to try and mod it. I still need to get a 360 stick though. I was hoping to buy ChaosHat's but I haven't heard from him. I'm currently without a job so I don't think I could justify springing for a TE right now.
Doublt edit: This is a bit embarrassing, but any tips on doing Sagat's fake kick? I'm stuck on Normal Challenge 1 because of it. :P It doesn't seem to matter how fast I press hard kick twice, it never cancels the move.
You have a TE stick right? The buttons should be large enough that you can double tap HK by rolling your middle and index fingers over the button.

You have a TE stick right? You could use the turbo because all you want to do is get past that challenge, and fake kick is a stupid fucking move you'll never use that's needlessly hard to do and has no reason to be in the game.
I could hug you so hard right now. :P
It's like 20% successful for me, but that's good enough to get past the shitty challenge requirement!
Wish I had gotten here earlier. But fixed the advice for future TE stick users for getting past fake kick.

Actually, fake kick is used at very high level play, against the people who have the reaction to punish a whiffed hard kick.
Not sure what the situation is on stick selling on Ebay, but you could possibly grab a cheap 2nd hand SE stick, then just spend the extra cash on mods and it'd most likely still be cheaper than a standard priced TE - you'd just lose the bigger base, the cable store, and probably the peace of mind that someone else did the 'modding' for you already (it really isn't that hard though.)
If you have larger hands or like to rest your palms when you play the SE won't cut it. The metal lip around the faceplate digs in to the palms and irritates to no end. Otherwise, modding it makes for a great and relatively cheap stick.
Hey now, the only thing I've used turbo for is to do that damn fake kick, the 2nd time (on my pc version). The first time I didn't have a stick with any of that turbo stuff, and I didn't know about any of this fancy finger rolling junk. I just had to learn to tap that button at the speed of light. Thanks to that the rest of my body is now slightly older than my index finger.
Okay, I'm going to give Modern Warfare 2 another day, but its multiplayer is so terrible. I might trade it in for credit twoards SSF4 by Tuesday.
In unrelated news, has any other Bison player noted the utility of an empty DR -> throw? I seem to catch people with it all the time...
it's a useful trick to keep in your satchel, but it's risky because there's so much potential for being anti-aired near the end. an opponent with fast reflexes will usually pick you out of the sky.
don't do it against Dhalsim, his b.HK will beat every single jump-in or air attack that Bison has, including DRs and headstomps
the main disadvantage is that people tend to learn not to fall for the empty DR throw fairly quickly, so you have to do it when it's unexpected.
Hiryu is a total genius at playing Abel and I couldn't be more happy that he stopped to help me improve my game. It's pretty great that I can finally hold my own online largely due to the help he's given me.
WITH THAT SAID I can not for the life of me understand how Ken is supposed to win anything. If there's anyone who knows a lot about ken, or could point me where to look, I would greatly appreciate the assistance. Too often I find myself either over run or trying to approach my enemy and just eating a dragon punch or a flurry of low attacks. Abel's EX TT was a great option against that... but Ken just doesn't make sense to me. The shoryukens have so much recovery and the fireball is so bleugh in every way. What gives?!
Also interested in Seth if anyone's good at him. Though I'm not sure such a person exists...
Don't use hp SRKs outside of combos. Don't use hp SRK in a combo against crouching opponents or short people. Don't use hp SRK as an antiair. Learn to love the mp SRK. Use his variety of pokes.
I can do Ken's kara throw on the PS3 controller pretty much consistently. I never pick Ken because I am sick and tired of seeing him but yeah it's possible.
After the Tatsu you should be able to backdash and roundhouse counter if your opponent tries to grab. A shoryuken probably beats a throw attempt, too? I don't actually know : (
I play Ken on a pad and I think I can do his kara throw reasonably often. His normal throw is still pretty awesome in any case, I think.
You might want to look into his crossup hurricane kick in the air, too. I haven't looked into it, but it seems to really open up some things and tilt the guessing game in your favor.

Good games, Dudeward!
Likewise. I know it's been a day or two but eh.
I really want to try to start Sakura-ing but here lack of damage just terrifies me.
Not liking the new announcer at all. Sounds like they grabbed the F-Zero announcer and shoved them in there. Hopefully I can tune him out like I did with the original announcer.
Juri's defeat quip might just top Viper's English defeat scream, uuugh my ears.
Need help with execution on Ryu's c.mk to ex tatsu to ultra. I used to be able to do it every time, but now it always slams them with a normal tatsu. Are my buttons failing or am I doing the input too quickly or something? Keep in mind I'm using my pad's three kick button to execute.

It sounds like you're accidentally doing a tatsu with a negative edge. Try plinking the c.mk and releasing both lk and hk to negative edge ex-tatsu. That or just hit buttons faster I guess :P

Walk or dash forward or back, air throw, jump back whatever attack, shoto cr.forward, etc* nullify both HS or empty DR so I rarely, if ever, do it.
*soooo many counters to Dic's air specials
Bison shenanigans can still work on a bunch of people online though so whatevs.
Yeah, I test the waters early in matches with air shenanigans to see if it works, because fuck it I'll take wins doing headstomps all day, but if not I stay grounded with a maybe once per round empty DR -> throw.
It helps that Bison's pokes are so good, but I wish he had just a little more oomph. His mind games are sexy right now but his damage is what I hope to see amped in SSF4.
Alright. Another easily answered question, I'm sure.
How in the hell do you block overhead attacks on wakeup? I was thoroughly embarassed the other night, when some El Fuerte got his R. Kelly on as he just spammed his dive/spash attack every time I got up for an entire round. Block straight back? Hit. Block back/up? Either hit immediately or hit as my jumping frames begin. I tried flame kicking (Fei), but one of 'em wasn't effective, and then I think I was just too flustered/angry to pull any more off.

What am I missing here?
All he's doing is crossing you up.
Basically you have to guess - is he going to splash from a bit farther so he hits you from the front, or is he going to splash from close up so he crosses you up, and thus you'll have to block the other way? Once you successfully block you should have the advantage in frames and be able to pull some jabs off or something.
Your flame kick should beat all of Fuerte's splashes as well, on wakeup.

Your best option is almost always going to be to dash out of it really. Though I don't use Fei and I don't fight many Fei's with my Fuerte to really know.
But you can learn to block his splash, and you can probably Rekka off of it on block. Or you can do a focus, which will stop a splash on either side, and leads to a crumple if he lands infront of you. (Though then that opens is up for the other moves out of run, personally I rarely splash anymore)

Li Joe was using it frequently in his matches on the stream tonight.
"Winners don't use [strike]drugs[/strike] [strike]turbo[/strike] throws."
More early 90's thinking.
Use the turbo to get by some of the sillier training mode stuff (1 frame links, etc) just to get your title and be done with it.
