Man, I got the demo and using the wii remote was terrible. I felt like i was fighting the controls more than the monster.
As stated, the Wiimote controls are not recommended, especially for first timers of the franchise. I got used to the controls after about 2 hours, but I'm used to finger contortion antics on the PSP. The Classic Controller & Classic Controller Pro are large steps up in user experience.
Component cables make a huge difference, even when a game doesn't support progressive scan. It's so much cleaner, going back to S-video or RCA/composite will make your eyes cry.
More importantly why wouldn't you go with Component when the cables can be had for <$5?

I've been playing a ton of Unite recently and am spoiled by the PSP controls. I just wish I had a classic controller already so i could get more enjoyment out of the demo.

I would order the gamebundle and a cable if I could find a cheap cable that wont die on me.

Neat trick with great swords: With the weapon drawn, you can use a kick and follow up directly with the GS slap attack, which also does KO damage.
Not that this would sway any PSP-only players, but Classic Type 2 also works beautifully. I really missed the R-stick attacks.
I just hope that next game they have the full-on 4-shoulder button controls as an option. It was in Monster Hunter G Wii when using the classic controller, so it's pretty bizarre that it was omitted from 3
So if I've never played a Monster Hunter game before, but I picked up the demo disc from GameStop yesterday. Is it acceptable/advisable to use Wiimote+Nunchuk, or is that just completely outrageous? I know that you pros prefer the Classic Controller because it mirrors what you're used to with PSP and such, but is it also the most sensible choice? Am I doing myself a disservice if I don't use it?

Let's put it this way; we're not going to snub someone if they use the Wiimote controls. Everyone has different preferences on how they play their games. There is no "right way". However, if you feel that the camera controls, or doing multiple things like moving and sifting through items, is difficult or putting you in harms way, then I'd say that it could be a failing of the controls you are using. If you find yourself in that spot, I'd recommend giving the CC/CC Pro a shot if you can buy cheap or borrow.
Monkey's speaking for himself, I will totally snub you and the abomination that is the wiimote/nunchuck control scheme, you horrible horrible person.
:P
All kidding aside, Monkey states it well; try it, if you like it, great. If not, give the CC a try as well. Having never played a Monster Hunter game before, you might actually like the way the wiimote controls work, and its just us crabby old-timers that find it an affront to fingers everywhere.
I gave them both a brief shot, and I actually found the CC to be the more confusing of the two. But I only gave them each one try without even using the same weapons or anything so...
my friend actually liked the wiimote/nunchuck controls. he also gained competency with them a hell of a lot faster then me. Now im getting the bundle with the CC, he's debating.
I prefer the chuck/mote for some weapons. It's actually got really good camera controls even compared to having a stick for it on one of the CC layouts.
Thanks for the input, guys. I actually DO already own a CC... so yes, I could (and likely will) just try both and see what I like best. But I didn't want to try playing with the Wiimote+Nunchuk if it's basically an exercise in frustration, if I could avoid it.
So I decided to start a new character on 2g (Freedom Unite) and I was wondering do you guys usually research guides and stuff while you play and go for specific things, or do you just go out and complete hunts and just sorta see where you go?
I've always felt like using a guide is cheating, but sometimes this game, if I wanna make a certain weapon I usually have no idea where the stuff is unless I look up which monster I need to cut up or a special way to do it so there's a better chance for something.
I've been using guides. Mostly wikia, though it's not very well organized IMO.
As far as progression, should I be sure to have my preferred weapon as fully upgraded as it can be without parts from a given monster before taking on that monster? And how important are resistances?

Minegarde.com has a pretty comprehensive weapons tree with all required items and paths on it.
As for elemental resist; In MHF/F2/FU it's not exceptionally vital, you're generally better off going with higher defense, however I hear in MH3 it is somewhat more important and can have a larger effect.
Grabbed a striking kitty as opposed to slashing which is what I'm doing and I'm amazed at how often he's able to stun monsters. Really saves me a lot of trouble.
I had never played a MH game before so I decided to pick up the demo disc for MH3 from Gamestop yesterday. I've been playing around with the different weapons and basically getting a feel for the controls at this point. I feel like there will be a lot of depth to this game once I get the hang of it. Any Monster Hunter veterans with advice for new players?

Don't be afraid to read guides or watch tutorials if you're stuck on a particular monster
Though this doesn't really apply to MH3 as of yet

I finally beat that stupid flying bird monster dinosaur.
It took a giant hammer to do so though. :P
So far my favorite weapons are: Switchaxe, Sword/shield combo, and the hammer. They are pretty fun.
The only weapon I outright hate right now is the Lance, as I can't get a handle on using it.
Still on my quest to get to (possibly finish) G rank on MHFU before touching MHTri, and finishing the Akantor urgent today with 0:57 left on the clock was a pretty big step towards that.
At the 2x Hypnoc urgent now, haven't given it a shot yet...is it safe to assume any hit in rage mode is going to be a one-hit KO at this point?
There are a few rumors going around that Capcom will be announcing Monster Hunter Portable 3rd tonight. The rumors are backed by a solid-looking leaked magazine scan, presumably from this week's Famitsu (due out on Thursday, but leaking out as always a few days in advance), showing illustrations for new Japanese-style male and female startup armor.
So what's so big about tonight? Capcom is actually holding a Tokyo demo event for the PSP's next Monster Hunter game, Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Airu Village. That spinoff title was announced late last year following Monster Hunter 3's release, but we've heard little about it since.
The word is that there's a 12 page article in Famitsu for Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. It is not Tri, but features many things introduced in Tri, and some monsters from Tri as well. It will support infrastructure mode, and have new monsters and fields like mountain streams. There will be no underwater combat like in Tri. Does not support save data carry over from 2nd.
Not 100% confirmed, but I think it's legit.
Oh and maybe MH fans care. Weapons are boardsword, longsword, hammer, one handed sword, dual swords, gun lance, flute, lance, bow, slash axe, light bow, and heavy bow.
Of course, people are going nuts as if it were Tri anyway, because how dare PSP owners get a third MH game to go with the other two when Nintendo is on the cusp of ruling the world, cannibalizing own sales, yadda-yadda, etc.
Ruined FOREVER.

I don't think they sent out confirmation e-mails. Also, I don't think the demo is going to arrive until tomorrow or Thursday if you did sign up.

The classic controller is super-light, but still feels sturdy. The tension on the analog sticks is pretty high, which I like.
