MHP3 this year? Well I guess MH3 will have to wait then!
And there is nothing in that trailer I do not like, it looks great, and seems to be mixing up the old monsters with the new MH3 ones and some unique ones too.
Looks like fun.

Amazing how far they are pushing the PSP. Graphics look much improved from unite. So excite for more Monster Hunter.
That's because the color depth appears to no longer be 16-bit/24-bit with banding (finally).
Looks like every regular MH3 monster is in, minus the ones whose primary habitat is underwater (Lagi, definitely Navadeus). Rathian and Rathalos are definitely based upon MH3's version. Does this mean collision has been fixed? Totally new minions (giant birds) as well as some from Tri (sand fishies).
Also noticed: Weapons have new moves from Tri, such as the SnS Shield bash, hammer upswing, and the spinning LS finisher. I'm wondering if maybe the controls have been changed. Peace Walker did so, to great effect.
2 cats at a time confirmed, and what looks like cat equipment made from monster materials spotted.
I like how the Gunlance now has slash moves instead of just stabbing. Seems to be a more oriental themed world too.

It seems that felyne fighters have a much more in-depth customisation armour wise now, and you can bring up to 2 on a quest. You can give them armour and weapons from monster materials.
Undewater movement is still unique to MH3.
Confirmed returning monsters are Tigex, Narga, Rathalos and Rathian, then most of the new ones from MH3. GL is back with new moves and it looks sweet.
This is all bittersweet. Sometimes I wish games wouldn't come out so quickly. With Portable 3rd coming before the end of the year, it really makes me disinterested in devoting a lot of time into Tri. And I was just about to start playing some freedom unite again too.
In any other genre of games, it would be great to have good games always coming down the pipeline to play once we've finished a 10-30 hr game. But when we're talking about 100+ hour games where the whole point of the game is to always chase the next item, I kinda wish they'd just limit our choice for a good long while. Maybe I'm just crazy though. :P
Oh well. Guess I'll probably skip Tri and play Portable 3rd when it comes out. Gonna finish Assassin's Creed 2 and other ps3 games I've never gotten around to finishing.
Still on my quest to get to (possibly finish) G rank on MHFU before touching MHTri, and finishing the Akantor urgent today with 0:57 left on the clock was a pretty big step towards that.
At the 2x Hypnoc urgent now, haven't given it a shot yet...is it safe to assume any hit in rage mode is going to be a one-hit KO at this point?
Not once you start making new armors. Granted, some monsters do have some ridiculous attacks if you aren't careful (hello Naruga tail slam!), and the pre-G armors are pretty much like wearing cardboard..... but as you start making new armors/upgrading old ones, you'll balance out again. Still, expect things to be a bit more challenging again. :P
The 2x hypnoc quest wasn't difficult, in my opinion. Compared to the roadblock that akantor is orignally, you probably won't have too much difficulty getting to G rank.

Looks like siliconera has redacted the international release statement and is now saying "Japan 2010" like many of the other sites out there.
It's okay, they can take their time. I still have plenty to do in MHFU and (soon) MHTri.

Three tries at this last night; it wasn't getting KOed that was the problem, but actually dealing enough damage with the LBG I had. Nothing like failing on the second hypnoc as it limps away....twice.
Then I just said screw it, grabbed two mega juices, a hammer, mega demondrug, and destroyed them in 35 minutes. Now it's gathering time!

I understand where you're coming from 100%, but I reached the exact opposite conclusion. I'll be playing MH3 and not portable 3. Why? Because I'm sick of grinding up the same low tier monsters every iteration.
I don't want to fight kutku ->Cephadrome >Gyp >Plesioth >Basarios >Crab Monsters> other monsters we all stopped caring for 5 years ago all over again. When I pick up new monster hunters it's to fight new monsters, not because I want to farm Lao for plates again. With MH3 you get new content from the start to the end. With portable 3 it's the same ol grind for 30 hours before you start seeing something new. Not again.

At this point, do we even know what original monsters are going to be in this one? The only ones anyone have seen so far are Tigrex, Naruga, and Rathian/Rathalos. If this is going to be all the old monsters + all the new ones from Tri that were shown in the trailer + whatever else they're adding in, that might be a bit overkill. If what I'm reading is correct, P3 is also supposed to have fewer quests than Unite as well. So, fairly sure the list of monsters will be pared down accordingly.
I'm taking the best of both worlds approach; Tri from April til Portable 3 is a good amount of time to have fun. And if we're talking about waiting for the US release of P3, even longer. Why not get both.

Now that I have a wife and daughter, available time to play games is not what it used to be. So a 7 month window between games seems small. Then again, I've managed to put >216 hrs into modern warfare 2 by mostly playing at night after my girls are in bed. Maybe I will end up playing both.
BTW, did anyone ever figure out how the new GS charges work in Tri? Back when I played around with the japanese version, you could no longer hold it down and get a level 3 charge.

I can probably safely assume that MHF3 isn't going to have a lot of the "old guard". From the video, things looked very new, except for the ones that were already stated by Senior Crawfish. Dear lord, if I have to go after another Lao in a different game, I'll scream.
I also am in the same boat as Elderlycrawfish - I will be enjoying MH3, and then when MHF3 comes out, I will enjoy that. And probably both at the same time! Hell, I'll probably still be playing MHFU at the same time as MH3...just not when I'm home, though .
Heck, I just grabbed a copy of MHP2ndG, iso'ed it, English patched it, and then went through all the rigmarole to have it Ad Hoc with MHFU JUST to play the Download quests that are Japan exclusive (JUMP! quests). I plan on playing both MHFU and MHP2ndG on Ad Hoc and sharing the love at some point, if anyone is interested in the Pirate outfit, the lobster weapons, and other random stuff (still need to download some of the quests).
So, maybe it's just my Monster Hunter addled brain that is making me want to buy every copy they release.

Monkey, I hate to break it to you, but there was a much easier way to get your hands on the JP exclusive quests, providing you're running CFW (which I assume you are since you iso'ed it?) :P
That said, much thumbs up to your love of the game, and for offering to run the quests with others. Most people I run into are very happy to get their hands on the exclusive stuff. One of my favorite joke sets to equip is full lobster with the lobster claw duals; always gets a laugh with people that see it.

Really? I couldn't find anything on that Well then...heh, I guess that would have been easier. I take it you get the exclusives and load them as "custom" quests? If so, then I think I know how to do that.
Still, I'm glad I did what I did. Got me quite a bit of experience in fiddling with my old PSP in it's new CFW state. Hell, I only CFW'd it for this, but there's some useful stuff to be done with it as well - like video recording! Which I got working as well over the weekend while I was sick as a dog.
I wish I hadn't run into this franchise so late in the proverbial game. I only started playing, what, last August? And my dirty addiction to MMOs is long gone because of MH. I really didn't like the time I spent playing WoW or STO or Aion or...any of them. It felt like empty accomplishments since advancing through the game doesn't really take skill...just time. MH takes both skill and time, but I can put the damn game down and go outside to spend time with my wife and friends.
Edit: HAH, just found the quest converter for MHP2ndG to MHFU... That's super easy. Thanks for pointing out that it could be done, or I would have just stuck to my current method.

Indeed that's too bad. Even MH1 was pretty glorious, provided you could get online. Otherwise, once you finally "got" the game, you really ran out of stuff to do quickly with just the offline missions.
MH2(dos) was also WELL worth importing, even with the international billing hassle to get online, and time spent brushing up on Japanese to translate stuff for myself. Unless you're going to import Frontier for 360, it will still be the only way to see the second gen of MH content with full color depth, on a TV, and play it with a controller actually meant for human hands. Plus the whole "it's actually online-capable" thing.
Japanese players were also pretty awesome. I believe I surpassed their expectation by attempting to meet them halfway language-wise, but I think the main thing was simply being reasonably polite. Everyone would always say (in Japanese) "Nice to meet you", and "good luck". If you were KO'd, or accidentally sent them flying, they'd always tell you "DON'T MIND". At the end of a quest, everyone would tell you "well done" or "GOOD JOB". It was a great experience and too bad that KDDI's automated billing system had an aneurysm trying to charge me properly. Brought it to an abrupt end

Japanese players online were also surprisingly nice from my experience on ad hoc party. They'd even try to say things in english at times. This was my experience for the most part. There was one time a guy found out I wasn't japanese and kept saying "Shi-neeeeeeeee" which means he was telling me to die.

Aye, I would have had a blast playing MH2(dos). And I'm surprised I never really heard of it back when it was released. If there had been ANY marketing, or any one of my friends playing it, I'm sure I might at least have given it a shot. Hell, I still don't remember how I ran into MHFU in the stores. I think it's because of this thread, but I can't remember. It might have been an advertisement, but...*shrug*
Any ways, thanks again Elderlycrawfish - I got the Japanese DLs working on MHFU. That was quite a bit easier than the way I had it set up earlier :P

You can also see what kind of custom quests people have made as well, if you search around. Mind you, I'm not really a fan of ridiculous ones that give easy rewards, but it's really neat to see what kind of creativity people can achieve with themed quests and monster size. It's hilarious to fight a Godzilla-sized Kut-Ku, or a Teostra the size of a house cat.
The ones that really ramp up the difficulty are also fun for the challenge.

I saw one that was an arena quest, with 20 buffalangos and one huge Bulldrome. The buffalangos always respawned to make sure there were 20 on the field. So the entire time you're dodging stupid charges, trying to down a Bulldrome. I really want to try that one out...

I'm a bit nervous getting into Monster Hunter for the first time with Tri...is that normal?
It's wierd, so many people just love this series, but I just am having trouble understanding just what I'm getting myself into. All I seem to come up with is Action/RPG/MMOish type game. :?

Action? Check! MMO? Nope. RPG? Nope.
Monster Hunter is fairly unique in that you gather items and build equipment (that has stats) but you yourself don't have stats... you just have you, and your equipment. It's all about the slaying of the beasties and taking their bits to make better equipment to slay more beasties. But mostly it's about slaying beasties that are trying to eat you. With Friends. And sometimes flinging your friends across the screen on accident... while slaying beasties.

As a proud owner of a japanese wii and an import of the game, i must say this game is awesome. And something to stoke the fires of crazy...two simple words.
Water Tigrex.
....sort of. He shoots electricity and looks like he'll be the tigrex bastard of this game. He one shottied me on the mission where i accidentally stumbled on to him, and now i'm looking ever so forward to murdering this bastard in the upper tier levels. I'll be buying this for the US version too though, as I'm missing a lot of stuff by playing it in japanese, but dammit its been worth it

It's wierd, so many people just love this series, but I just am having trouble understanding just what I'm getting myself into. All I seem to come up with is Action/RPG/MMOish type game. :?
Monster Hunter is a straight action game. The story is: You live in a pre-industrial hunter-gatherer civilization. Your job is hunter, and everyone depends upon you for the raw materials needed to live. Food, shelter, tools, weapons, they all come from the monsters you hunt. Go do your job. End of story.
The battle system is deep. Movement, aim, and camera control are all 100% MANUAL. This is necessary to attack each monster's unique weak points in real-time. Your attacks go exactly where *you* place them and it's possible to be very precise, but it is not a game you pick up, play, beat, and forget.
Monster Hunter is a game of skill. Not just motor skill, but learning the monsters, their habits, their capabilities, their timings. They are unstoppable forces. Just as you can't hope to stop an oncoming truck by punching it in the grill, you cannot expect to stop an oncoming train-car-sized monster with the flick of a sword. When you begin to play, expect to lose. Expect to lose until you *think* about how to win.
You need to play it smart. You need to know your own abilities with each weapon. You need to use the other tools at your disposal wisely. Snares, explosives, tracking aids, medicines, and more; they'll all help you, but only when used at the right time, often in the brief instants you'll begin to recognize as being out of harm's way.
And the payoff? Your victories and losses are entirely your own. Monster Hunter is one of the most fair games that exists, and one of very few games where it's possible to realize YOUR skill has "leveled up". You also get to keep parts of the monsters you defeat and use them to make new gear. What do you do with it? Aside from look cool, defeat bigger, badder monsters of course!
Monster Hunter is also a game of teamwork. Go online and share your victories and defeats. Even a hunter with no armor and nothing but a half-decent supply of bowgun ammo can turn a raging demon into a paralyzed, whimpering mess, but it takes at least two to truly make the most of such opportunities. You can hunt in parties up to four at a time. Make the best of it. Make friends. Fight together, fight as one.
That is Monster Hunter.
Oh, wait. Lastly, Monster Hunter is also a game of humor. Every item has some flavor to its description (although the flavor of emergency rations isn't so hot.) BBQ ridiculously huge roasts to a goofy tune. Is it well-done? Well that LOOKS TASTY! Get familiar with little cat-people, mya! (BTW, pop out a torch near the white cats and watch what happens). Get sent flying and watch your hunter flail hilariously while sailing through the air. Get knocked out by a monster? Time for a ride on the kitty cart (and an unceremonious dump on the ground)! Knock out a tough monster and enjoy the sight of stars spinning about its head while its tongue lolls out the side of its mouth like a great big idiot. Though the action is tough, demanding, and the learning curve can seem like an immediate vertical wall, Monster Hunter does not take it self seriously, and neither should you. Have fun!

Thanks so much for that description. I'm very much looking forward to this, and the way you describe it makes it sound so fun and in depth.

He shouldn't be particularly tricky with G-Rank equipment, but his Snap and Drag move can still deal a looooot of damage if you're not careful. As it's fought in rounds it doesn't really matter that much if you don't maximise your damage.
Just stick behind his right leg and he can't see you very well, he sometimes ends up walking into walls and you can wail on him then.
Just do a couple of practice fights to see how he moves and responds.

Just stick behind his right leg and he can't see you very well, he sometimes ends up walking into walls and you can wail on him then.
Just do a couple of practice fights to see how he moves and responds.
Aye, and try to get used to where his head is when he lands from his flying fireball escapades - hitting his head is quite worth the time, but don't tarry around in front of him, lest he snap and drag himself over you.
I'm finding Black Fatalis kind of boring now that I've figured out how to melee the bastard. But it took me about 5 or 6 tries to figure it out. As Halos says, stick behind his right leg the most, and stay away from his leg or tail when he does the snap and drag. Also remember that he keeps his damage between fights, so it might be worth it to save after you die, especially if you break his chest/horns.
EDIT: P.S.: Finally got a chance to share out the JUMP! Teostra HR6 quest on Ad Hoc Party last night to see if it worked, and if people were interested. I'd say yes. The Pirate outfit is pretty damn awesome (Carving Celebrity, Good Luck, Bomber, Demonic Protection), but no sockets and 0 resistances across the board. I've only got 3 tickets so far (need 1 per part, along with other materials), but plan on doing it some more. Feel free to ask me to put it up if you see me on Ad Hoc, if I don't have it up already. I'll be doing others as well, but I'm just starting with this one for now.
...one of very few games where it's possible to realize YOUR skill has "leveled up".
Seriously, though, this is why I enjoy MH so much. There's no traditional grinding in the sense that you are inflating some stat sheet of numeric values. When you grind in Monster Hunter, you - the player - actually get better at the game.
well, your inventory is actually a stat sheet of numeric values, as is each piece of equipment
That's true, but what the above poster meant was that you aren't inflating values on your character. You're not getting more HP or mana from every mission; your damage doesn't rise (though your weapon's damage does) and if I gave White Fatalis Z armour and Magnitude to a newb they'd fail a Kut Ku mission.
I HAVE given G-rank gear to a newb, and he got killed by Congalala. He even knew how to drink potions and such, although that ability was taken away from him at a few key moments.

BUT YOU CAN'T SWIM UNDER WATER!! *gasp*
Seriously though, if MHP3 is released THIS YEAR, as that article from siliconera.com states, I'm speechless.

They're not the same game. :P
And there is nothing in that trailer I do not like, it looks great, and seems to be mixing up the old monsters with the new MH3 ones and some unique ones too.
Looks like fun.

Undewater movement is still unique to MH3.
Confirmed returning monsters are Tigex, Narga, Rathalos and Rathian, then most of the new ones from MH3. GL is back with new moves and it looks sweet.
It's okay, they can take their time. I still have plenty to do in MHFU and (soon) MHTri.
Still more Monster Hunter is just... awesome.

I also am in the same boat as Elderlycrawfish - I will be enjoying MH3, and then when MHF3 comes out, I will enjoy that. And probably both at the same time! Hell, I'll probably still be playing MHFU at the same time as MH3...just not when I'm home, though
Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter
Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter

Any ways, thanks again Elderlycrawfish - I got the Japanese DLs working on MHFU. That was quite a bit easier than the way I had it set up earlier :P
Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter

Water Tigrex.
....sort of. He shoots electricity and looks like he'll be the tigrex bastard of this game. He one shottied me on the mission where i accidentally stumbled on to him, and now i'm looking ever so forward to murdering this bastard in the upper tier levels. I'll be buying this for the US version too though, as I'm missing a lot of stuff by playing it in japanese, but dammit its been worth it
Battlenet: Judgement#1243
psn: KupoZero
Have fun!
