I put in an order for the package deal (the black classic pro looks kinda spiffy), and a component cable.
--I'm not sure about the online though, I haven't played a Wii game online that doesn't suffer from some nasty lag input based on location(Smash and Naruto).

Could never do MH portable online things either due to adhoc party requires your ps3 being hooked up ethernet cable style and I cant do anything but wireless.

That was so painful to watch. They get to play it and they're all like "let's not use the spit, we need a potion or something." But it did look nice, and the monster didn't have an obvious step-step-attack routine like almost everything does in MHFU. Not that I have a Wii, but this bodes well for 3rd too.

I enjoyed the demo, but I'm looking forward to playing the much meatier final version.

Yea, the video was a bit painful...but the guy even admitted in the beginning that he's not much into Monster Hunter.

Is it worth it to use sword and shield? I used it in the demo to down the first guy, but im concerned about making kills within the time limit, because it does very low damage.

The best defense is not being there in the first place. Still, you can block with a greatsword.

During the full game, mission time limits are almost always 50 minutes. It is possible to make kills in the demo's 20-minute time limit using SnS, but you'd need to know what you're doing pretty well to take down Pecco or Rathian that quickly. Jaggi should still be fairly easy.

Man I remember in MHF when the Sword and Shield was the best thing, it was great.

Anyhow nowadays SnS is a pretty 'balanced' weapon, I mean all the weapons balanced with one another but the SnS is easy to pick up and use, you've got quick attacks, blocking ability, using items whilst the sword is unsheathed, you can chain your dodges into attacks etc. It's got a lot of very useful abilities, but as you said the damage is low, elemental effects are more useful than Raw damage (unless the formula has changed drastically in MH3?) and you'll have to work to get decent kill times.

But all the weapons are viable so just go with what you like.

Different tools for different jobs. Sword and shield might not have the raw damage output, but (at least in the past, I'm not sure about Tri) will typically have a good elemental or abnormal status bonus. Quick hits, particularly to deliver something fun like paralysis, or to dole out elemental damage to a creature that is particularly vulnerable to it, can more than make up for the lack of big numbers. And of course, you have the mobility and versatility that only come from sword and shield, which can be quite helpful against certain critters (particularly fast, mobile ones that are difficult to hit with the larger, slower weapons).

In MH2(dos), since monsters had roughly double the HP as compared with Freedom, poison was the only way to roll for those huge-HP monsters such as Gravios and Diablos, and the best tool for the job was surprisingly the Upper Tabar Zin (Upper Battle Ax, I think?). Only the High-Rank, online-only Queen Rapier could beat it for rapid poisoning and raw damage, and that was really not fun to work toward making.

Yeah. It's a wonderful weapon. It plays a lot differently than every other MH weapon, though. Whereas most are generally matters of care and smartly placed hits, SnS is pure hack'n'slash and enemy prediction. You see, yes, you deal like five to eight damage per hit to the GS's 30 (100+ with a level 3 charge) - but you can keep the pressure constantly. Your weapon is fast and has no afterhit lag, so you can jump in, slash three times, roll away, let monster attack, jump in, five more, roll, jump in...

Basically, SnS is the "pressure" weapon. LS has turned into a bit of this as well in Tri.

Additionally, a rule of thumb - the "closer to ground" and smaller the monster is, the better SnS is against it. SnS'ing Plesioth? A huge headache involving a lot of slashing at his toes. SnS'ing Blangonga, or Daora, or Rajang? So pitifully easy you'll be left wondering how could you ever have had a problem with them in the first place.

And yeah, it's still very good in Tri. I would have never been able to kill Beriolos when I tried the Japanese version without the Rathalos SnS. Bastard walljumps like he's Megaman X.

Of course, people are going nuts as if it were Tri anyway, because how dare PSP owners get a third MH game to go with the other two when Nintendo is on the cusp of ruling the world, cannibalizing own sales, yadda-yadda, etc.

    Ruined FOREVER.

I think the big thing is that the last PSP game was an excellent port of a PS2 game, which is fairly reasonable given the comparative power of the systems. On the other hand, if a Wii game can be ported to the PSP, then that means that the design of the Wii game was deliberately gimped so that it could be ported more easily. Wii owners are already frustrated by having multi-platform releases being based on the PS2 version, so having a game that was supposed to be built for the Wii from the ground up turn out to be a PS2 port that just never got a PS2 release would be fairly offensive.

If the announced PSP game is in fact something different that just uses some of the concepts, then that's completely fine as far as I'm concerned.

Not sure what everyone is ranting about RE: MHP3rd/MHF3. There are obvious huge sacrifices in texture quality and polycount on those bosses. The animations, however, made it through very nicely. As far as mechanics, PSP had darn well be able to handle a few small mechanics changes under the Monster Hunter hood. We all know the major Tri mechanic change, underwater battles, isn't going to make the cut. The rest of the downported content and improvements are very reasonable, especially in light of other popular games beating MH to the "not shittily color-banded" punch such as Phantasy Star Portable 2.

It also seems Portable 3rd is getting some content from later Monster Hunter Frontier Online updates, such as the Canyons stage (and most likely the Rathalos/Rathian-style lightning wyvern that comes with it). This means the engine is an update to Freedom 2/U with some features and resources copied from Tri. Capcom' Monster Hunter team has been busy with the American version of Tri and 360 port of Frontier, and darn well hasn't had enough time to fully port the MH2(dos), MHFrontier, or MHTri engine to PSP--and why would they? We've seen features from a new MH game backported to an older engine before - MH Portable/Freedom 1 was a port of Monster Hunter G. MHP2/F2 was NOT a port of Monster Hunter 2, but a modified version of the MHF1 engine. They added the new weapon classes and monsters, and some other things, but the proof that it's not the MH2 engine is in the MH1-style controls, missions not supporting sub-goals, dynamic bounties, seasons, or variable time of day, and armor upgrades not supporting changing into new forms (Rathalos Lv3+ > Rathalos S or Rathalos U), quests are still fixed in tiers like MH1 rather than the quest counter being different SEARCH options, and no story events or town upgrades. These were all the major engine improvements of MH2 (dos).

If anything, I do expect this game to FINALLY support sub-goals from Monster Hunter 2 (dos). The fact that it has less missions than Freedom 2/U points to this, as sub-goals allow all stupid minion-killing and "deliver X" missions to be rolled together with a boss monster hunt.

I'd imagine the less quests is more of an opening for MHP3G personally :) It's said to have more missions than Freedom 2, but less than 2G.

Am I the only one who's glad underwater combat isn't in P3?

Yeah, the underwater combat seems a bit gimmicky. I doubt they'd add extensive sub-goals to the portable missions, as they seem to be designed for on-the-go portability in mind. Short, to the point, get in the game, and play.

Sub-goals add to the flexibility of play, since you can just complete any sub-goal and return to town with your current stuff and a smaller reward. Only the main goal is required to clear, but the subgoals not only give you 2 other ways out without failing or aborting, but they offer you extra rewards if you have the time to complete them all.

    Examples from MH2 (dos)

    Main Goal: Hunt 1x Rathian. Sub-Goal A: Cut off Rathian's tail. Sub-Goal B: Deliver 7 Royal Beetles
    Main Goal: Hunt 1x Velocidrome. Sub-Goal A: Kill 8 Velociprey. Sub-Goal B: Deliver 5 Special Mushrooms
Main Goal: Hunt 1x Conga. Sub-Goal A: Deliver his shiny drop item. Sub-Goal B: N/A
Main Goal: Hunt 1x Basarios. Sub-Goal A: Deliver 8 Coal. Sub-Goal B: Break open Basarios' chest

So, say you cut off Rathian's tail but then things took a turn for the worse. Carve that dang tail and sub-out at camp and you'll not only keep your stuff, but also get an extra shot at that Rathian Plate in the rewards, because that's part of the potential loot for Sub-Goal A.

Anyway what I want to know about weapon switching is if it's character-based, like you have to be a certain avatar to use a weapon, or if you just switch in the camp, or if you can even switch while out hunting.

Any character can use any weapon you have.
And furthermore, all weapons are viable on all monsters. It may take longer to kill a certain boss with a certain weapon (for example, you won't win any speed runs with Hunting Horn in Unite or Dual Blades in Freedom 1), but every weapon type can be used for every fight, with enough skill.

The character customization is just a skin and gender (with the exception of the rare gender-locked armor options, but these are generally novelty armor sets). Any character is equally proficient with any weapon. One neat feature in Unite (not sure if this is in Tri) is a log that keeps track of how many times you've used a weapon and places that on your guild card (exchanged with others). Then, other people can see your favorite weapon and weapons that you do not use regularly.

In Unite, I highly recommend getting proficient with 2 melee options and 1 ranged option, for a good mix of playstyles. Such versatility isn't necessary, but may make some fights a bit easier.

Instead of dealing with opening up your PS2 to swap you can use the HDD.
There were "HD loader" discs you could buy that would let you rip the game to your hard drive and it would ignore the region data.
Most any old IDE hard drive will work and of course you need the network adaptor.

Wow. I managed to grab a copy of the demo and proceeded to get my ass handed to me (I'm completely new to MH). Worked at it and finally beat Great Jaggi, but could not for the life of me beat Qurupeco. I always ran out of time no matter how close I got. Well today, although I nearly ran out of time, I killed that bastard. Quite satisfying. The control definitely takes getting a handle on. I still haven't really. There an obvious timing to everything that I haven't grasped. If you watch a hardcore player go through the demo (there are videos here and there) it looks so simple. They seem to take down monsters in half the time and nearly never take a hit. Although to be honest I keep forgetting there's a "dodge" button. I'm used to dodging just by hitting a direction and moving that way, but in this game you have to use the Evade/Dodge most of the time, since it's faster and then you don't have to really change your perspective. I wish more than a control manual had come with it, and there had been some kind of tutorial, but I might actually get the game even though I don't understand everything and have no idea what any of the crafting is like.

I'll probably have to pick up a Classic Controller though, not that the Wii controller is really BAD, just that their button choices aren't great. Kind of sad there's no GC controller support since I've always just used that when a game called for the Classic. Means I have to make yet another peripheral purchase.

Kill two birds with one stone.

I agree about the GC controller support, but really once you play with a classic controller, you will realize just how bad the Wiimote controls really are. The bundle makes getting a classic controller for $10 basically a no-brainer.

If the minimap icon for a monster goes back to white, does that mean that the monster has healed, or just that it's calmed down?

Thanks, was wondering about that. When I took down the first monster in the demo, I did a bunch of damage but then had to run. Or maybe I was knocked out, I forget which it was at that point. When I got back it had actually fallen asleep. I managed to take it down suprisingly easily from there, so I assume that I had nearly killed it before.

    Do they heal at all?
