So how exactly does chat work in this? The manual wasn't particularly clear.
Keyboard is like in pretty much any MMO. Press enter and just start typing.
For Voicechat, you need Wii Speak. Only other players with Wii Speak will be able to hear you.

What's the range on it, though? Will everyone in the same city hear me, even if they're on a quest, or what?

Good question, not sure, as I haven't really played with anyone else who has the Wii Speak. I believe anyone in the same City as you can hear you, but I cannot confirm
Definitely, i'll not to be as rubbish next time and I'm certainly ordering a classic controller tonight.
Seeing as you have a PC handy do you have Skype on it? Cause I have Skype on my phone. It'll be much easier than trying to use ingame chat. Unfortunately I Can't get Vent access near the Wii.

How does gathering work online? I know that everyone gets a carve when they kill a big monster, but like can everyone get equal carves from an herb deposit or mining spot?
So I got hold of Amazon to ask them where my game is.. and it's in England with UPS.
Apparently there was some screwup at Amazon + UPS which means I wont recieve the game untill monday.
Great. But as compensation I don't have to pay the 8GBP it costed to send it. Great. Or you know not.
Either way, it looks like there will be no hunting of Monsters for me untill monday.
So for now I'll just haunt the thread and cry to myself while you all go about slaying of the monstars.

Also, had a nice glitch last night.
Every time I would kill one of those deer things, they'd go dizzy, but it would show that I killed them, so I would carve, and then mid carving they would jump up and run off screaming towards the nearest zone exit and vanish into thin air.
Pretty damn funny, like operating on someone with no anethesia.
Also, not sure if this is the case, but for those having trouble collecting monster info, when I go to hunters notes in the menu, and bring up the cursor, the enemies wouldn't attack me. They'd just stomp and growl close to me, but they didn't actually attack until I collected the info and closed out of the menu.

I assumed that wasn't a glitch. I figured you would just carve off non essentials of theirs and then let them go.
I guess, for whatever reason, they don't want you to knock out a guy, carve it, kill it, get another carve.
edit: by the way, just wanted to mention that the Royal Ludroth fight we did yesterday was a pain in the ass. And I was pretty pissed when we managed to cut off its banana mane, but we were underwater and I had no idea where the piece landed. I think it was a sparkly piece in the water that i didn't get in time.
Is it like a world of difference? I have a bit of trouble lining up attacks using the Wiimote and having to C-click the camera into place is a tad annoying.

So, is there a noticable difference between the standard av cables and the component 480p cables? I set my picture to 16:9 in settings and that made a huge difference, but I was just wondering if the cables were worth the $20?

I'm so going to make me a bone switch-axe when I get the materials.
Are some of you people not even playing the singleplayer? I've been playing a shitload the last few days and already feel like I've fallen slightly behind.

I don't have the internet at home right now, so single player is all I can play. I'm hoping to get to jump online in the next several weeks, but we'll see.
I need the single player time to get accustomed to the game though.

I play single player and other are way beyond me, I just got to 3 stars this morning. For me I spend a lot of time just harvesting and getting used to the play mechanics. Like I figured out this morning I could augment my armor with "decorations" that would increase certain stats. And I also figured out despite being given a charm I didn't equip it. DOH!

What's a good combo chain for the greatsword?
I've been using X (downward swing), X (quick slap after downward swing), A (spin cut) and then X+A (upswing) and that seems to take it's toll on stuff that doesn't get knocked down immediately, but I don't know if there's a better combo.
Also, is there any kind of targeting? I'm having a hard time killing insects with the GS.
edit: Also, I know it varies depending on the monsters attack patterns, but what's the best guard+dodge with the GS? I'm constantly getting hit mid attack because I'm not planning it out right.
This. Game. Is. So. GOOD. *cough* Anyway, the more I play Tri, the more of a feeling that I have that the game is more similar to the Freedom series than it is different. I don't feel like the game is substantially changed or improved. To me, it's still just Monster Hunter, with different names for monsters that are essentially past monsters "with a twist". The graphics actually look a bit pixelated and dated to me; I don't know why I thought they looked better in the trailers. With the PSP, you kinda expect less intense graphics, but with the Wii, it feels underwhelming, reminding me why I didn't purchase a Wii until this game. I don't even feel the right analog stick on my CC helps me much, since I'm used to tapping L all the time when I need to change views.
It doesn't feel "better". It just feels "different". But it's still Monster Hunter to me.
The one thing that feels substantially improved is the animations. The new Rathian has pretty much the same pattern, but she moves and grooves smoother and more fluidly. The monsters in the previous games always had great animations, but in Tri, every animation feels tweaked a bit better.
Still rockin' it with hammers. As I've suspected, the triple pound was nerfed in damage (golfswing only does around 60% for the triple pound, but oddly enough it does more damage after the spin swing), while the superpound seems to deal the same damage as before. The splash radius of the superpound feels substantially increased, which is great for hitting heads and lousy for hitting your teammates. Hammer still feels like wearing old comfortable clothes... I settled into it quickly, and it's working well for me.
I'm currently HR 10, finished off my Barroth Urgent, and eagerly awaiting to go on 2 star hunts.
Walked into Gamestation and found they still had 3 Ultimate Hunter Edition. So I nabbed one and they threw in an extra monster model
Dabbled in single player a bit so far, learning the ropes ( first ever MH game ) and am having a blast. Will jump into MP when I can and hopefully see you guys out there.

Seriously? you don't think anythings improved? I can tell you off the top of my head i love that theres a separate ammo pouch for gunners so no cloggin up my inven, empty space on the use item thing so you dont accidentally use a potion when you wanted to do something else, and being able to use gathering items without cycling to them as well.
Granted these a small things but they make it a smoother experience.
Oh and SnS can stun now!

This would have been nice to know yesterday when I played for four hours and involuntarily went through seven whetstones, four potions, three herbs, and two pieces of well done steak. Eventually I gave up and just kept the pickaxe as my go to item.
So for those in solo did anyone else kind of use the great jaggi as an additional damage dealer on the big quarawhatever? He would seemingly get hurt and run off but I know that he also winged that thing multiple times.
Also how do you make a pitfall trap? I have the kit is that the trap or do I need to combine something?

So is gathering and getting better equipment easier online or offline?
I've done the tutorial and a few of the one star quests, but I'm kind of getting bored (not with the game, just with not playing with three other hunters)
I'll keep at it though if it's going to be easier.
Royal Mail Fail! Now I have to decide if I can be bothered to get up stupidly early (for a Saturday anyway) and pick my game up from the sorting office before my wife goes to work, or wait until she comes home at some nebulous time in afternoon/evening.
Sleep or MH? Which will win?

I finally got the game from Gamefly last night.
I was wrong about the sword and board, it's a lot easier to use than the great sword. That damn thing is just as impossible to control as I remember.
I've finished the tutorial and a couple one star quests, and have some horrible mismatched armor, so I'm ready for online this weekend.

You could always just unplug your PC one and use it with the Wii while you're playing the game. :P
Anyway, I'll be on in about eight hours for more monster slaying action. I need to get that final piece of the fatman armor!

Rock on hombre! I'd suggest when you can make it/buy it get the hunter gear, just make sure to get the blademaster set.
I trapped that fucking jaggi and then killed the quarawhatever the fuck just in time to leave for work this morning. Cha cha is hilarious.
