The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I visit www.cgtalk.com, and their method of inserting URLs is quite slick. It's a VBulletin board, I believe, so I don't know if things would be cross-compatible...
When you click the Insert URL button, a text-entry box pops up, and asks for what text you want the URL to display. You enter it, click next, and a second box appears, wherein you enter the URL. A simple click of the Next button inserts a perfectly formatted link into the post.
Anyways, from the amount of botched [url][/url] attempts and "Yuo suck at teh bbcode" comments I've seen, their way of doing things might be worth a look.
Backstory: alpha, the popular simian that he is, doesn't have room to keep PMs, so he wanted me to post it in here.
Wow, that's uh, unexpected. I don't really see why it would be annoying, but to each their own, I guess. Maybe, if it gets coded in, it could be toggleable?
And Steven, yea, we have a preview button, but unless I am drawn only to those threads that have fuckups in them, I see a lot of easily corrected mistakes or "damn spelling" edits...

I don't see how a popup for the url would have any affect on that.
Edit, and for those that havn't realised, if you highligh some text and click the url button, it put's tags around it.
It comes in handy when you are trying to link to complex addresses (ie, not as simple as www.google.com). For something like that, if you see that in the middle of someone's post, it doesn't really disrupt the flow. If, however, the person is posting a link to a video, say, at "www.videoshere.com/myvideo/[random, lengthy chain of letters and numbers here]", that's annoying, and looks better if replaced with a woven link, say, "You can see my video here". Plus, it can rape the precious H-Scroll, and that is really annoying.
If you wanted to make it even simpler, do something where both entry fields are in the same box.
Highlighting doesn't do anything to the link unless you actually go insert =Link name here after the "url." That's what can get messed up easiest, if they don't try and type the [url][/url] themselves.
Just giving an alternate viewpoint, and I've said all I have to say, so that's the end of my commentary.

Its really not that hard to do it right, and its even easier to check.
Hmm.. I never really cared. I never liked the invision system myself. Anyway, this thread basically says all that I think on the issue. It would help some, others would hate it, if you cant figure out how to make the links I have little sympathy given the FAQ button is sitting at the top of every page.

I usually just type it out but I think this way would be a lot easier for some people.

Really its not that hard, like Orthanc said, just highlight the stuff and hit the URL button.
Also I agree, those popup boxes are really annoying.

TTB uses invision
vBulletin is by Jelsoft. TTB used the actual vBulletin before Anatole and Elder came on board as admins.
Then they converted to phpbb2 using a vbulletin-like template.
Now they are using Invision, by "Invision Power Services".
oh shoot, sorry about that. um. i mean. i don't care. as long as i can still just type it out like i always do.
