Yet Another (Movie) Memory Failure

I saw this movie as a kid in the 80s. All I can remember about it pertains to the chaotic relationship this young boy has with a freaky doll that has some sort of magical/special capabilities. The relationship between the two starts off rather well and the doll imbues the boy, or maybe awakens the boy's hibernating psychic or telepathic abilities.

Towards the end, there is a falling out between the two - the doll is actually evil or something - and the boy is forced to fight it with the new powers he's been given.
