Hello everyone,
My girlfriend has discovered the joy of my old SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis and the wonder that is 2D games. She doesn't like 3D games as she can't control the camera very well (which, by the way, I think many many people have a problem with).
We just went through Streets of Rage 2, and she loved it. I enjoy playing games with her rather than have her sit out or go and do something else in a passive-agressive sulk.
So, what other co-op 2 player games should I go and trawl eBay for? My copy of Toejam and Earl is getting some good use, but it a little tough. I was thinking of taking a look for one of the Golden Axe games. Does anyone have any other ideas?
A lot of the ninja turtle series of games have co-op, though I honestly don't care for the ninja turtles themselves.
A fair number of racing games might work, mario kart being the chief among them. For sidescrollers I would almost say the Donkey Kong series for the snes, but I remember the problem being that you still have to swap whos in control at the moment.
Secret of Mana. It's one of the few co-op RPGs to appear on either system, but damn, is it cool! I beat the game along with my brother way back. If I had a MultiTap back then, I probably could have gotten my sister in the act, too.
It has a bit of a learning curve on it though. If you like western games with over-the-top voice acting and racial stereo-types this is the game for you.

Make sure you get the SNES version though, as it has more characters AND more levels.
Go to the menu.. config.. and you can split the party among 2 players... I had alot of fun playing like this when I was young. My brother controled 2 characters... I demanded Gau and whomever else he deemed fit. I love Gau very much...
I also quite enjoyed Golden Axe, Super Double Dragon (or Double Dragon 4) and Turtles in Time. Contra rocks, so Contra III wouldn't be a bad choice, though I haven't played it.
And yes to Final Fantasy 'III' (6). It IS turn-based, but you can split off party members between two of you. I had a blast with coop back in the day.
Sonic 2 is sort of co-op, although if you're playing as Tails you're never on screen. You do get the benefit of being invincible though, so you can take out bosses and stuff pretty easily. It also helps to have two players on the special stages.
Soldier of Fortune for the SNES. It is a top down shooter, and the co-op is great. It also has RPG elements as you improve your character every other level. If you can find a copy I highly recommend it.

While the SNES version is fairly faithful, the Mega Drive/Genesis version reduces the number of characters to two, and similarly the number of levels is cut in half, in addition to the common occurrence of lower sound and graphic quality, but the stage designs are completely different.
One of the biggest changes to the Super NES version was the replacement of the Native American enemies in the sixth stage, with the regular cowboy enemies in their place instead. This changes some of the gameplay on that stage, since the regular Native enemies fired flaming arrows and dropped rocks on you, attempting to block your progress; however, this only affected the U.S. version; the Japanese Super Famicom version retained the stage as is. Also, Chief Scalpem (or Wigmam, as he is called in the Super NES version) says, "Get ready for a Pow-Wow", and "I'm Pow-Wowed out!", with correct grammar. Not surprisingly, this only affects the caption. As the voice clips couldn't be redone, they were simply shortened to, "Ready for Pow-Wow", and "Pow-Wowed out!". Other changes to the U.S. Super NES version include removal of female enemies (possibly to avoid backlash of violence against women), and giving all the female bar flies in the game longer dresses instead of their normal corsets and underwear. Also none of the characters drink anything when they come out of doors, instead simply posing when they get a powerup from a door.

VC people won't shutup about Toejam and Earl too.
Or Super Probotector as it got called here in the EU, since two humans killing stuff was too violent for some reason.
Xbox : gunst4r
Only for Germany.
(probably)

Turtles in Time.
Lewis, I bet your girl would dig Secret of Mana too, if you can find a copy.

Add another vote for Secret of Mana and Mario Kart.

Best 2D games ever produced - Coop mode is actually blended well into the game, too.
I also quite enjoyed Golden Axe, Super Double Dragon (or Double Dragon 4) and Turtles in Time. Contra rocks, so Contra III wouldn't be a bad choice, though I haven't played it.

Add one more vote for the already listed streets of rage 2, toejam and earl, and turtles in time.
It's a coop RPG where all the battles (with some exceptions) are sidescrolling beat 'em ups. More info here.

I liked Sunset Riders better on SNES.
At first, I read that as 'cho aniki'.
I literally screamed "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

Oh the betrayals.
How's it work?
Edit: Also it doesn't seem to have Gunstar Heroes.
Fuck if I'll be bothered to fix it, though.
I am particuarly looking forward to Sunset Riders
Ah, I didn't even think of the SNES there, I only played the MegaDrive version. I'd assume the SNES version looks better.

Already mentioned as it's SNES version name of Soliders of Fortune.
