Yes folks, it's that time of year once again. Mid Autumn, NFL is in full swing, leaves are starting to fall hard, the crisp autumn air is inviting you inside as the nights become longer, and yes, TOMY, a publisher of various anime based games gets ready to release another Naruto fighting game on a Nintendo console. It's been a yearly tradition since '06.
But this time something is different. The smell in air...is it apple pie? Is it the smell of the first snow?
Is it the smell of a quickly patched up and better than the Japanese near launch release but still a fairly disappointing game?
Is it the smell of its much improved, but still fairly dissapointing sequel with it's own, oh shit we've already done every major regular non Shippuden storyline, entirely made up storyline that reminds one of a shitty movie?
Nope, it's the smell of quality. Of listening to the fans, of having tournament players of the last really good Naruto fighting game (Naruto GNT4, once hailed as the best GCN 3D fighting game over SSB:M by Planetgamecube!) come in to do some playtesting. Of 40 characters with ridiculous new powers, and of an unproven but potentially awesome wifi mode.
Without further delay I present to you...
[Strike]Super Mario Bros. [/strike] Naruto Shippuden:Clash of Ninja 3FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSHow come this thread isn't about the PS3/360 Naruto games? They look so damn good!
This game is actually fun to play, and isn't a giant fanwank like the PS2/PS3 Ultimate series. If I wanted to waste hours of my life watching cinematics on the PS3 I'd pop in a Metal Gear game. Sure some of those Ultimate games may have more characters than you can shake a moon at but the general gameplay of all those characters is very samey.
The Ubisoft series is ok, but kinda fails as a fighting game.
This game however is something else. It's one of those rare times when a ridiculously simple and goofy idea actually works for a fighting game. It's basically a cross between Bloody Roar (Eighting's first 3D fighting game franchise, by the way) and Killer Instinct (Dial a combo strings), but with a distinct Naruto theme of crazy disappearing reappearing ninja shit. It also has controls pretty similar to Super Smash Bros. Watch some of the gameplay videos I'm going to post to get a better idea.
So this is the third game in the series?
Umm, not quite. It's the Fifth US installment, based on a heavily modified version of the 7th Japanese installment.
That's ridiculous, how'd that happen?
Well here's the short version. Naruto, starts off as manga, becomes hit. Becomes anime, also a hit. Takara Tomy has the game license to make GCN and GBA games. Releases Naruto:GNT in April 2003. Ten characters, not too much variety, but tons of fun. They make three more games in the next three years, ending with the now legendary GNT4. Cartoon Network starts airing the show in 2005, Tomy USA wants in on the action. Decides to start at the beginning, to not to leave any potential money on the table, instead of starting with one of the later ones. First game is released by Tomy USA in America as Naruto:Clash of Ninja in Spring '06, second in fall '06, right before the Wii launched. Takara/Tomy at that time is working on Naruto Shippuden:EX as the Japanese version of Shippuden (The second series, 2.5 years later) is just starting up, and it's going to be an early Wii game. So the US branch has a decision here. By the time the next game is due out the US will be all caught up on the first series so the US branch has a decision. Releasing 3 or 4 on the Gamecube (No one's buying GCN games) or up port three or four to the immensely popular Wii (I really wish they had done this) or try something different.
They try something different and call it Naruto:Clash of Ninja Revolution. They decide to take the new (and not improved) EX engine and rework it with characters from about the 5th Hokage/Capture Sasuke portion of the show. While they did fix up most of the hideous slowdown and bugs of EX1 (EX1 being basically the worst game in the series) they also didn't add many characters over CoN2, in fact they got rid of a bunch! So 2008 rolls around, Shippuden is delayed so they dub a bunch of the episodes for DVD release, EX2 comes out and the US branch releases CoNR2 with an all new, all different storyline. Lots of characters, including four brand new characters and amazingly some series first like Asuma and Kurenai and the obscure Anbu representative Yugao (Those three were added to the cast of EX3!) So now that Shippuden is airing in the US (started this week I believe) it's now time for a Shippuden game here in the western world.
So what's different about this game?
Mainly? Lots and lots of polish. They listened to the fans who cried out for a game more like GNT4. They reworked the gravity to make the game more combo heavy, while reducing the amount of chakra built up on defense. Chakra is used for special moves and more importantly, needed for the all important log replacement trick, but if you gain it too fast you can't keep up a good combo because they'll likely break it. They fixed broken combo strings, got rid of carry over glitches, gave people a way out of those annoying wake up specials (two ways out actually) nerfed people who could teleport at will by adding a small chakra cost to it, even rebalanced the entire roster giving everyone new special traits when in critical mode, giving everyone air throws, giving every one command throws, giving them new improved specials, combo strings, pokes, counters, basically a fresh start on life. One of the mentioned tournament playtesters said that the difference between the best characters and the worst is the smallest it has ever been in the series, kind of a big feat considering the game has over thirty five characters. It also has online battling, but who knows how that will turn out.
To summarize it was a top down effort by the producers of the game to reach out to the fanbase, ask what went wrong, and try to fix it. They've been very open about discussing their past failures, and have done a fairly decent job at promoting the game.
You seem to make this thread every year, XoB. Is this the game to own?
In the series, as far as the US games go, probably. I haven't played it yet obviously but I will give it a go because of the effort involved.
Japanese voices?
Nope, but they did get the regular English dub cast to do it, and they do a really great job.
Past fan of the series, who is in the game?
They've been releasing a handful of characters each week for the past few, here is the official roster as of Tuesday the 11th of November.

Yamato-These two chuckle heads are also in the first episode.
ANBU KAKASHI-Revo 3 exclusive...Too many Anbu, or just enough? Said to play like the Naruto equivalent of Akuma. High Damage taken, High Damage given.
Unofficially?
Yeah, Funny you should ask that, as what is most likely the final roster was leaked today in a gametrailers game mechanics video today. Here's what the official roster looks like as of today, picture courtesy of yours truely when the video first dropped. It's been edited since then. Some heavy spoilers here.
Sasuke-Duh, fangirl bait, also is in the first episode
Hidan
Kukuzu Real surprised at these two, as the game is supposed to cover the rescue Gaara act!
That's 40, which is over 35 for sure and definitely impressive. Probably final too, as why would the press release say 35+ when it was over 40?
Sounds really good, but is there a catch? Any goofy waggle controls?
Game has GCN, CC, and Wii Remote/Nunchuck Support. Like Smash, everyone from the old guard uses GCN controllers, though CC works fine. Actually, Wii Remote mode gives you an edge in this game with hand signs and added damage on special, and since the game basically only uses five buttons the controls work just fine.
Story Mode?
Game is based off of the first arc of Shippuden. Here's a decent trailer of it.

The people playing it are those four playtesters I mentioned from the willvolution forums.
Release Date? Price?
Sent to die three weeks from now against Darkside Chronicles and NSMB Wii. Regular edition $40, a nice deal from previous years and the gamestop limited edition is $50, the price of a regular game.
Limited Edition?!?
Fifty United States dollars. Includes the Naruto Shippuden Video. I prefer the other cover.

GNT4

Basically all of the new news comes out on Monday and Tuesday, then some of the gaming sites update their stuff later on in the week.
Most of them are doing a decent enough job with the weekly previews, but this is going to be a hard sell anyways.
Most people assume that anime based fighting games are going to be crap, and it's launching the same week as NSMB, Darkside Chronicles, and AC 2.
Oh, one bit of new news, you start with 12 characters if you have a CONR2 save, the four you get for free are the made for CONR2 characters...yippie.
Well I can't exactly cry about getting Bando for free. He's juggernaut megaman after all.
It's a hell of a lot better than the game it was based on though, EX1 is without a doubt the worst of the entire eighting line of Naruto fighting games.
It's almost as bad as the DS games, which I played a demo of and nearly lost my lunch after playing.
Imagine aping the graphics of the GCN/Wii games pretty well, DSising it and then completely messing up the game play. That's the DS Naruto fighting games. I'd almost rather play the Ubi games!
It's a total downgrade over GNT3 though, what would have been Clash of Ninja 3 if it ever came out here. No Kabuto, Anko, Third Hokage, Joke characters, Chouji, Kiba, Haku, or Zabusa.
All signs point to TOMY taking a break next year because there is no EX4, so maybe they'll finally do the right thing and port over GNT4.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIaAwfex2eA
Kurenai vs. Asuma. Very few changes in these two characters, but Kurenai does look a little bit better than her CONR2 form.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g31aDfOhekA
Naruto vs. Gaara. Gaara looks beastly in this game. Note that when Gaara's Latent Ninja Power activates (Golden glow on the character bar he no longer takes chip damage and can block specials, and has a half bar counter special...used quite a few times in round two!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY8JEpSju2Q
Hinata vs. Sasori. Man does Sasori look fun to play as.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y74kA5xT26M
Hiruko vs. Itachi. I really do love listening to Itachi's English VA. Also of note is how horribly unfair fighting Hiruko looks like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COMjv_2vmIQ
Team Snaaaaake.
Kabuto and Orochimaru! (Big surprise there)
Let's see. Oh so that's how you use Kabuto's second special! :P Kabuto was the broken boss character in CoNR2, so I'd expect a few nerfs.
Ninja Voldemort on the other hand looks very similar, except now he has juggles, a vicious looking custom throw, and what appears to be a counter special.
Orochimaru's Counter-Special is going to make him even more of a pain to kill than before.

Tenten vs. Temari. Man that's nuts. I knew EX Tenten played differently but I wasn't expecting this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOUXlCqhhZo#
Towa vs. Komachi. NEEDLES. Looks like Haku finally got that sex change. Yes, Towa looks as bad as ever. Yes, you weren't seeing things, Komachi's LNP does allow her to hold needles in the air for free. Yes, that could be about as broken as you think it could be.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_gv4X1XLXk
Bando vs. Kakashi. It's so weird seeing new and improved Kakashi, they show off two of his six new copy ninja specials in this video and his hilariously awesome air throw. This is the first time in a long time that Kakashi was any good. Bando looks about the same. The person playing him wiffs twice on a big hit after the blue stun, otherwise he might have done better. Looks like part of his LNP is slightly faster shooting of the uncharged orange shot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub8v8DMRhGY
Chouji vs. Shikamaru. Yes, Chouji has the worst dub voice by far but he does at least look cool in his Shippuden appearance. His LNP activates extremely early, but I can't figure out what it does. Shika looks the same as ever, teleporting around like a madman.
This game did include a lot of extra stuff though compared to the first Shippuden release in Japan on the Wii though, so I'm giving them a huge break.
Hopefully online is decent enough that I can get some matches in with some people from around here. I know Hydron is game but I play him enough IRL that the thrill of online will be minimal.
Ffffffff....
Having played the latest japanese version (club has a japanese wii, pretty much for this and muscle march), I can't recommend this series enough. It's been fantastic ever since GNT3 on the cube.
If I import from europe, I'll drop my FC in here, but it's not likely.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
B. Have you tried changing the channel your Router broadcasts on? Going to 1 or 11 seems to fix a lot of problems. Other decent advice is to give the Wii a static ip and open all ports on it.
This article gives away a few tidbits that were unconfirmed spoilers before.
Mainly that the roster is 40 deep and that ANBU Kakashi, Sai, and Yamato are all playable characters.
That's because he's voiced by Crispin Freeman, a man with a beautiful deep voice. Still doesn't really capture anything I like about the original VA, but he's always a pleasure to listen to regardless of being role-appropriate.
Not that I really watch the dubbed episodes anymore.
I'm a pretty big fan of Crispin Freeman myself, he does great voice work.
Also Steven Blum will be reprising his role as Pedophile Ninja Voldemort in this game with that great creepy voice he does.
Sasori is done by JYB, who has been doing every male lead in every anime for the past four or five years.
Most of the rest of the cast is made up of various familiar voices as well.
if i had extra cash i would pick this up
the combat is suprisingly good in all the others, barring some EXCEEDINGLY broken characters
Apparently they actually had tournament players come in to help test things and unbreak the characters.
During the first round of playtesting by the four guests apparently Chiyo and Sakura were SSSSSSS+++ Tier, and now they are just mainly above average.
Sure the game hasn't been played exhaustively by the fanbase yet but early reports say that the difference between the absolutely best characters and the absolute worst is the closest it has ever been in the series.
Also, it's only $40 new. Only 2/3rds the price of your average 360/PS3 game.
the last one I played was...clash of ninja 4? I think? My friend imported it...
I enjoyed it a LOT, but some characters (meaning the ones he picked) were STUPID powerful
Itachi for instance, as well as ...shino? the bug guy
To easy to cheeze with these guys
I will see if I can swing the fiancee into ok-ing this.
About to have to start paying back student loans though
wait- sakura was top-tier? I am confused now!
How is Kiba in this (or the previous ones)
EDIT: just watched the videos more
a lot of people seem unchanged....WAIT WHAT? you can kick away throwing knives?
Lee does it with his feet as does Gai. Neji does it with a rotational move, and I think there are a few other goofy ones.
Kiba is apparently good in this upcoming game, as he was also good in the game this is based off of, EX3.
Sakura was apparently broken to the point of being unstoppable before the serious playtesting began. According to the playtesters right now she is above average to great.
Yes, Itachi was broken in GNT4. He's been nerfed significantly in Revo 1 and 2, and was slightly boosted back again in this game, though now his behind your back teleporting costs chakra so he can't spam it at will. Shino wasn't per se but you need to stay on top of him otherwise you'd never get any chakra and as anyone who's played this series knows, having no Chakra is a death wish.
is the kunai reflecting new? or has that always been there?
Pretty much the only well received new feature besides paper bombs as most people do not like the obstacles or the stage transitions.
Man this game has been unlucky lately. Leaked roster, leaked videos, GS computer glitch telling their biggest fans the game is out a week early when it's most certainly not...
Apparently some stores that have the game have agreed to sell the limited edition tomorrow to anyone who has preordered. Now I don't know if you could go in tomorrow morning, preorder, and get it, and I know that not all stores are doing it (as some don't have the game yet) but it looks like breaking the street date for MW2 has emboldened them.
Also the website has the game "Ready to ship in 24" so if you're willing to pay for decent shipping you could get the game before the actual release on Tuesday...Probably. It's always YMMV with these sorts of deals.
Again, not confirmed. I'm going to try my best and get the game tomorrow.
AHHHHH I can't believe it, I'll have to wait another week for a paycheck ARGH!

A lot of Gamestops are getting both limited and regular editions in their shipments today, and either the game is street dated and they are ignoring it (NOT LIKELY) or the game isn't street dated.
I guess this person never bought CoNR2...
Now time for some spoilery stuff, I guess, if you're into menus!
You can sort of tell the ??? people by the background picture. Shop is in full force, something I would have guessed from the ryo rewards from the exhibition matches. That's good!
Ive been playing the jap version for a couple months now. Temari has been GREATLY tweaked and one of my favorite characters to use now. Like unbelievable levels of hilarious awesome. Though the wiimote nunchuck is completely clumsy, the added damage to supers is great as are the chakra and damage jutsu an apt incentive to cope with the controls. But man, one of the best features to this game is the return of using the D-pad. Precision baby!
See you online XoB
Early reports say that this game is a heck of a lot better than the last three japanese games and the last two american games. I'm excited.
People have mixed reviews so far of the online. Two people I know with good connections had a fine match, two people I don't know said their matches sucked and the game was a mess online. I'll give it some time myself.
My copy is in bound, I've been stuck here all day working.
