my friend has a ti-89 and every time we learn something new in high school math he finds out where it is on his calculator and never has to actually do any math

my friend tried to do that in calculus last year and failed miserably, but then again he's an utter moron
also he is going to be fucked if he does college level maths, they often don't let you use graphics calculators in exams

I didn't get to use my calculator is Calc 3 or Dif Eq
but that's because all the calculations and derivatives and integrals were easy to do in your head
I'm really hoping I can avoid taking english courses in post-secondary
edit: no problem squall
fahrenheit is so dumb
here I can literally get a physics degree in three years doing absolutely no classes that aren't physics or maths. It's pretty great, but I'm gonna keep doing a few chemistry papers because physical chemistry is piss easy when you're already doing real physics

Like, didn't get to use them at all? Even for homework?

no, just exams
but usually the homework was designed in a way that you could do the calculations mentally anyways

huh I'm only first year but we've been allowed calculators in everything but maths where some stuff is a little difficult but not too bad if you've been doing the homework

We don't get to use calculators on exams.
Ever.
Kinda blows when you can't remember special cases because they're mentioned once in recitation and never show up in the homework.
Alternatively,
When they expect me to calculate e^x by hand. I can never remember what e is!
When I was in calc 3/dif eq, if it came down to calculating e^(bollocks), you either left the answer like that, or you did something wrong and you were suppose to take a natural log somewhere

yeah I don't see any reason why you would have to know how to calculate logs or powers of irrational numbers unless you are in the 50s or something, and even then didn't they just memorise tables of logs? That's what our really old maths teacher in high school said at least.
logs and natural logs. We were never actually taught how to calculate them in high school.
They always just had us go to the calculator.
I was taught how to do those for round numbers
And that a half a log step was actually 3/10 of a power or something

Nope. They ask us to calculate logs, natural logs, e^(bullshit), arcsin/cos/tan, and a bunch of other stuff high school made me rely on the calculator for.
I can do the actual calculus. Differentiation, integration, etc. etc. Where I fuck up is algebra bullshit like that.

giving my TI-86 a good scolding
Well there's your problem.
(I have an 89. Fucking thing is so boss.)

I did this IN MY HEAD ya bitch
the goddamn thing does indefinite integrals for you!
whoops that one starts at 0 just like Kelvin
Astronomy has a ton of math so that practically counts. But after that I am done forever.
I have a thermo exam tomorrow and it's much better to figure out that calculator flaw in a silly situation like this rather than after the exam

We could have them.
But not use them on tests.
Or the SAT.
And I can't use it on tests in college.
But it makes the homework less painful.

gotta fire up MATLAB every time I need that
Lazy.

Not sure about other Unis, but the U of A makes everyone take some sort of English course as far as I know.
I use matlab to work with matrices because I hate them.
My RA is majoring in aeronautical engineering, so he gave me a copy.

Is this where I bitch about my biology class?
mostly just the fluid flow portion though

entirely because the teacher tests us on material we were not taught.

Guess I've been lucky in college then?
Pretty good profs throughout
well, even the bad ones only tested on the stuff they taught, they just didn't know how to teach

YES LET ME SHOW YOU MY NERDCOCK BY RECITING IRRATIONAL NUMBERS TO MANY DECIMAL PLACES
3.1415926536
But um I have no idea how to calculate powers of things with a decimal point (unless it's e^(i*theta), that's easy)

I just convert it to a fraction most of the time.
