OK, hopefully you guys can hook me up.
What was that old 3D arcade game where you zoomed through tunnels/subways and whatnot? You started out in a boring little ship, and every time you hit a checkpoint you got some kind of upgrade - armor, a gun, et cetera? The machine was like a red bench... There were also these invulnerable dudes, and you could drive on the ceiling in the enclosed tube portions.
