It may not function as a murder simulator, but it is teaching you tactics. Or you're teaching it your tactics. Either way is kinda scary.

Speaking as a soldier, the best way to learn infantry tactics is to join a military branch that specializes in ground combat. Playing video games doesn't do jack shit compared to being trained by NCOs with multiple combat deployments.

Playing Call of Duty MW2 will pretty much only train you to play Call of Duty MW3 or Doom IV or Quake V.

Indeed, the knowledge gained is really only applicable within context.

Wouldn't the ArmA games be closer to what's used for training? Or at least, various militaries seem to use a version of it for training (Virtual Battlespace)

Some random gamers playing ArmA seriously:

Tactical shooter games can give you a good idea on how to use tactics on the battlefield.
But they (obviously) dont teach you how to cope with the stress of combat, nor do they teach you the physical aspect of it.

I wont lie though, Forza2 + the MS wheel taught me how to parallel park.

So... this week's item-on-sale at Steam is Call of Duty 4 (Modern Warfare). I've never played any of the Call of Duty games, but I'm told they're quite spiffy, and I am looking for a good multi-player FPS to get into.

    1. Should I get CoD4?

    2. Will there still be many players on it once MW2 comes out?

    3. Is MW2 a systematically different game that attracts a different audience, or just an all-around better game and better FPS experience?

    4. If it's different, how so?

    5. I've never played any CoD games, so what could you compare CoD4 to? Battlefield 2? Counter-Strike? Unreal Tournament? (I know it's not that one).

    1. If you want to.

    2. Most of the servers I play on are boycotting mw2 so yes

    3. don't know, not out yet. Although main point of note so far is that mw2 will drop mw1's dedicated server support.

    4. see 2 and 3.

    5. Surprisingly its pretty twitchy, so quite like UT although not as out there being set in the military universe. Even some of the UT servers I used to play on swapped to COD when 4 came out, with the clusterfuck that UT3's release was.

Keep in mind everything I say from this point is NOT confirmed by any official material.

Reports are that a guy who got the game early had a stream running for a while. In it, he finished the game.

MASSIVE SPOILERS. LIKE, THIS IS THE ENDING. REALLY DON'T READ THIS.
THIS IS THE ENDING, TURN BACK NOW.
Shepard, an American general, is evil and you kill tons of Americans. At the end there is a white water rafting chase and Price duels with Shepard while Soap (whom you play as in the final mission, because Roach is dead) digs a knife out of his own chest and throws it into Shepard's eye. The ending credits are like a museum with in-game assets. It's a cliffhanger with very obvious overtures towards a MW3.

There's a Justin.tv stream of a guy just running through the airport massacre over and over. He's got quite a civilian murdering zeal, that one.

EDIT: Rio footage is a lot more interesting when the player is picking up a new gun every thirty seconds.

I would compare it to Counter-Strike as far as multiplayer goes, though there are lots of game modes. I mostly play hardcore team deathmatch but if you want a really tight CS experience I think you want to play... Search and Destroy? Is that the one with no respawns and a bomb mechanic?

Just a stupid question: having never played the original Modern Warfare before will I be missing out on the campaign completely, or does it not matter (I expect to be amazingly bad in multiplayer but that is given) ?

The storyline is standard military drama, so I wouldn't think you would really be 'missing out' on the previous story. To sum it up, a russian evil fuck sold weapons to, and teamed up with, an evil arab fuck. The brits and the yanks team up to whomp some ass and a nuke gets detonated along the way.
Anyone else feel like expanding on the original story?

He'll miss out mostly because of the characters and their journey through the first one. Price's past, present, Soap's actions and missions etc.

MW2 is a direct sequel to MW1, so you miss out on the entire backstory. That's not to say MW2 can't be played on its own, as MW1's story was finished by the end of the game. However the fact remains MW2 is grounded in MW1.

Pretty sure I read that kill streak bonuses that result in kills won't count toward future kill streaks (or was that just holding onto a helicopter or something wouldn't count on your next life?).

My highest kill streak is 37 and I think I have ~4 or 5 days played. But I am awesome so there's always that to consider.
