Basically, as the title sugests, i have a usb flash disk that has some important files on it i'd prefer not to have lost.

The problem: Whenever i try to access it on a windows (XP or vista) computer it says that it needs to be formatted.

Basically as i was in the process of transferring files from a XP comp to a vista comp, i plug in the USB to the vista comp and it says it needs to be formatted. I have allways used the "safely remove option" and no other operating systems have been involved.

Is there any way i can attempt to recover the data on it or am i out of luck?

You could probably give it a whack with Testdisk, an open source utility that might be able to recover the disappearing partition. For usage, check the Testdisk Step By Step guide at the bottom of the page.
