X-Box Red Ringed... then didn't but is still busted. Help?

Hi, Re-Bought Mass Effect to try and use the X-Box as it has been a while since I have used it intensively. Worked fine. I died, replayed and then the screen froze. No Biggie, I'll just reset. Screen froze again, only as soon as the game proper loaded. Lather rinse repeat until the Xbox logo on startup crashes and I RROD. Restart... same frozen image except no RROD.

My question is: Can I do jack about this, or if an XBOX Red Rings and no one is there to see it, does that mean no free replacement for me?

Do I need my receipt for anything?

You can do the whole thing online at xbox.com. Just mark it as a RROD, I don't think you'll have any problem with the warranty. I mean, it DID red ring and it still seems like you have a video card problem even if it isn't red ringing. You don't need your receipt, everything keys off the serial number of the XBOX.

It isn't screwing up on the menu anymore though, but about 2 or so minutes into the game? Does this affect anything?

I just did this a week ago, and they've made it very easy these days. It only takes about 5 minutes to fill out the form, and it lets you print a UPS label to send it in for free.

When you send a system to Microsoft for repair, they have to be able to replicate the issue you reported in order to correctly bill you for the repair; i.e. they need to get a red ring to place it under the warranty, graphic errors for that other problem etc. You can call the support line and speak to a real live person in India and ask them if they will just send you a new one for the rrod even if they don't get one themselves. They did this a year or so ago when nearly every launch 360 was dying and they couldn't keep up with the repairs.

BUT, the problems you are having could also be related to your hard drive. Try playing without the hd (if it's not the dl version of Mass Effect) or with a different hard drive. If are still having the freezing/crashing errors, it's probably a sign that your 360 is on the road to permanent rrod. You can try to start the repair process now, or just keep using it until it always red rings and send it in.

My 360 had issues completely unrelated to three red lights but they replaced it anyway under the RROD replacement program. I don't think they're checking each machine.

I had the same issue. Except mine kept saying the disc was unreadable. The game is really buggy when it comes to that sort of stuff. Try deleting the saves and retrying it. And/or using a new Mass Effect disc and installing it to the HDD.

Ditto. Mine ate discs, said it was a RROD, got a new system. But they do say that they will check them. Some might get checked, others might just be "Hey Paul, there's a 360 in this box" "Ok Jim send them the replacement unit."

Edit - Stress that it occasionally red rings. They can't sit there and wait for an occasion while making repairs.

i just had my 360 replaced earlier this year that had a dead optical drive by saying it had a RROD... they didn't check the unit at all, and i got a replacement (refurb 360 in my original case) within 2 weeks. YMMV of course.

I hate to quote myself, but most of you guys seemed to have missed that part there. And there are examples that go both ways. I sent in my first 360 for rrod, and got the same one back repaired but nothing wireless would work. So I sent it back after explaining over the phone what was wrong. Well the repair people thought it was for another rrod and since it was fixed and didn't red ring anymore, they just sent it back to me without fixing the wireless. So I had to call them again and spend an hour on the phone being transferred from India to Mexico and finally someone in the US (probably in Texas) to get it fixed properly.
