My dad is in the hospital ICU right now after suffering a cardiac arrest during the night. We want to bring his sister who lives in Italy to Canada so she can her last words or just support her brother (and my dad) through this difficult time.

What is the cheapest way to get short-notice tickets from Italy to Canada?

"Cheapest" is going to run you thousands of dollars.

You can try calling the airline and explaining, but they're unlikely to be tremendously helpful unless you get lucky. Orbitz is probably about your best bet, otherwise.

the best deals for cross country trips Ive found I can find from www.vayama.com.

I got a round trip ticket from egypt to the US for leave for 600 bucks, when everyone else was paying upwards of 1500 dollars. I dont know how good they'll be about short notice, though.

As someone who's traveled intercontinentally on short notice quite a few times: luck, is my only advice. You're going to pay a lot, barring a tremendous amount of luck.

I'm sorry for the difficult time your family is enduring.

It seems like going to Italy to Turkey than from Turkey to Canada is the best.

I've heard that you can get flight discounts from some airlines if there's a family emergency - I'm not sure which airlines offer this - especially for international flights...but you should try to look into that, and call up some airlines that fly from Italy to Canada, and ask if they offer those discounts.

(I've heard about this in the US, but I can't imagine that the US is the only country that would have airlines that offer this).

I have also heard of airlines offering discount flights for emergencies or deaths. I know Air Canada flies from Italy to Canada. I would suggest calling and speaking to them. It cannot hurt to ask.

Okay problem solved. We had a friend of ours buy plane tickets through their company (they book flights ahead of time often just incase) for 600 dollars. It's a no stop flight and covers both ways :D
