Correct me if I'm wrong but if Nintendo makes a console in 2010 or 2011 that is equal in performance to a 360 then they will have a console that is using five year old technology, just like with the Wii, but this time will place them on even ground with the other two. As supposedly the 360 and PS3 are going to have longer lifespans than previous consoles. That'd be quite convienient for Nintendo.
No it wouldn't. Nintendo makes a large profit on each Wii sold. MS and Sony do not make much money (if any) on each of their respective systems sold (It's why MS loves accessories and subscriptions). Nintendo is currently outselling the competition by a large enough margin that you must combine 360 and PS3 sales to match it. It would be idiotic to spend R&D to create a product that will destroy your profit margins and who's main appeal would be to those who already have chosen a comparable system in power while having none of the games. It would also go against much of their developer support as they can use the current Wii as a lower budget alternative to the company destroying budgets that the HD systems so often require. If they wanted to create a more powerful system it would have to be powerful enough to draw away 360/PS3 customers as "now with motion control!" isn't much of a tagline now that MS and Sony are both working on their respective motion controllers. In the end they would be segmenting their user base, irritating developers and destroying the profit margins. That's not very convenient.
DC:
Outputting at a higher resolution is easy. You just need a more powerful GPU. MS and Sony could release a respective PS3/360 that guarantees 1080p and more AA as opposed the the 720p or less nearly all games go with now. It just wouldn't make much sense financially to do so.
Good points.
Do you think that Nintendo will stick with the Wii as long as Microsoft and Sony stick with theirs with the reasoning that if no one else is developing a new console then why should they?
Could it be possible that instead of a new console that they might eventually release some kind of add-on at some point to "refresh" interest in the console like the Sega CD tried to do?
The thing to keep in mind is Nintendo and Sony/MS have completely different agendas. Nintendo is a video game company and little else. They look to optimize profit in the one area that they do business. Sony and Microsoft, on the other hand, are much larger businesses with a much broader focus. Microsoft's reason for getting into the console business was to build a presence in the living room. Sony and MS are perfectly willing to write off a multi-billion dollar expense to gain an overall market presence. Nintendo is not. In other words Nintendo isn't going to make a risky venture to gain market-share unless they are certain it will make them more money then they're making now. Even if Wii sales slow (which Nintendo can easily drop the price further to counter) there is little incentive to risk their place next generation by jumping the gun. Nintendo looks to go in different directions and if you come out too early MS/Sony will be able to "borrow" whatever Nintendo thinks up as well as play the loss leader game with a more powerful system.
I don't think current hardware could produce an affordable (<$400), large enough jump in graphics over what the 360/PS3 currently offer to pull away any of their userbase and the current market is eating up the Wii as is so I don't see Nintendo coming out with a new system until MS and Sony are looking to do the same. The reason you don't want to release too late, however, is that dev support will have already swung to their competitor and built themselves around that system and won't want to shift again. However, you could do what the PS2 did and convince devs/consumers to hold out, but that's risky and probably won't happen given the current status of the big three.
As for the Sega CD thing, that's kind of what they're doing with WiiFit except they're not segmenting the userbase at the same time. WiiMotion+ is just a $20 expansion. They're most likely thinking of different ways to get use out of the current system. They scrapped a DS2 because the DS was still selling well enough and competition wasn't forcing their hand. As such they're obviously thinking of their next system and so are MS and Sony.

Too bad they can't just release a memory expansion pack.
I would also like it if my wii could play dvds. I hate having to switch out cables when I want to watch a movie.
There is a homebrew application that allows DVD watching with the Wii. Pretty retarded that it takes a homebrew app to do something like that.
DVD playback requires licensing and the Wii doesn't have all the doodads required to be licensed
basically DVD playback only happens with homebrew because it's vaguely illegal. Nintendo can't even add DVD software playback support to Wiis because the DVD forum wouldn't let them.

I figured it was something like that. At least it's still possible.

It'll be interestng to see what the next big move is and who it'll be by. It could be a long wait.
Reggie: Michael [Pachter] continues to be the only one who believes that this is gonna happen. I don't know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD.
