God. Such warm fuzzies. I dunno what it was about that game. And I highly doubt it will half the same impact on me today if someone remade it. But...id like someone to try and find out!
When I first heard about Elderscrolls Online, my first thought was how it'd just have to be like Asheron's Call. I'm pretty sure I looked up what the proposed mechanics and gameplay would be like and got depressed at the realization that it wouldn't be. Maybe I should take a second look?
Nah. ESO SHOULD be AC heir, in theory, but very little suggests it will be. A little bit actually does. Real time, actiony combat, hybrid class/level + skill system. Not 100% AC in that regard because its not 100% skill based, still some level and class.
But yeah, it doesnt look close. Maybe closer than most. Sort of seems like a DAoC+AC but no where near as good as that sounds.
Morningthaw eventually moved to the sub as well, but it got spread out to the different cities first. I liked it spread out, created different markets.
City-based trading also made a nice public venue for Dagger McGee. Big audience.
Dagger was one of Morningthaw's more famous troll/griefer types early on. Greatest hits include reporting a Skeleton Bone Lord to the AC Sentinel team for abuse:
My friend "Munj" from frostfell was banned for trying to order a pizza through report. He was also a very notorious PK/griefer

Some of those types were just extremely irritating.
...but sometimes so, so entertaining depending on who they were irritating
So, I've decided that I am absolutely going to get back into this after a 10 year hiatus, and the various changes are, like, woah. I'm rolling on DT, naturally, and I'd like some advice. Is there any particular race/skill/gear combo that's especially effective (PvP or PvE)? There's oodles of crafted/enhanced gear and shit on the wiki, but there's nothing that really tells me what the top weapons/armor are for each type.
Back in the day, I had fun with a dagger-wielding Aluvian, spec'd in Quick/Coord/End with Dagger/MeleeD/Run as specialized skills. PvP was tons of fun when I wasn't getting my shit kicked in by a mage.
edit: oh god the camera is way clunkier than I remember it
Do you mean that War (and Void?) magic is superior damage these days, or just that I'll be needing the usual Life/Creature/Item magic? I should've been more clear by mentioning that I intend to include those, regardless of my weapon choice (which is looking like sword/Heavy with a shield).
pshh. I will take my sword and own with it. Even if "owning" ends up being "sully the robes of mages with the ashes of my remains".
edit: wait, there's buffbots/tradebots now? I guess Turbine doesn't give two shits about macroing anymore, though maybe those rules only apply to auto-combat macros. Also, I have to give Turbine props for the huge number of configuration options; with a little tweaking I can get the camera/interface/controls to be reasonably non-infuriating.

Man there has been buff/trade bots since I last played which was like 2003ish. They been around forever.
The only truely banned bots were ones that gained exp. Which also doubles as those going for loot, but back when I played at least, bots really werent in it for the loot (and I think it took awhile for them to be able to loot because of the way looting worked)
I know I have botted before. My friend got me to get into blood back then, and it was kind of hard to avoid botting. He was extremely tight with the "cores" so he had access to everything. He even made some money off of some of the botting they got him into before getting out of it.
I never took it that far. I think I botted the bottom of that elementals place and some deep tuskers room but that was it. I stopped when one day someone found my out of the way lifestone and repeat killed me till I lost everything in my inventory. Must have been a good day for them.
I simultaneously spent about 1k and got back about 800 on AC when I played. I was 17-19 years old, so it wasn't like I cared. Some of those guys in Blood though made 5k+ on that game.
Man, I miss AC...I really hope they put up an update or something, I'd like to play again...just not sure I have the energy to re-learn so much for the millionth time.

I would play just for the sake of relearning.
I just dunno if I could handle the interface though. That is the one thing that just aged TERRIBLY. Even the graphics I could handle, but the UI and shit was just so bad. The viewable game was a window within a window -_-
The interface is still pretty clunky, but there's a lot of options that make it somewhat tolerable. Everyone's using Decal now, though, and that also helps a lot.

True story: I browse the official forum every six months or so, and the last time I did I noticed a thread in the vein of "if Decal goes away AC dies".
Decal no more? Say it ain't so!
Then I read that it had been a little over 24 hours since a game update and Decal hadn't been updated to match, and wasn't working yet. And people were screaming that Turbine had killed Decal forever and ever.
Even as small as it is, some of the inhabitants of the AC community are as disappointing as ever.
Yeah, the game's inhabitants continue to be largely terrible, but (IMO) that's just on Darktide and primarily just a symptom of being a PvP server. However, I did get recruited into an awesome guild within like 10 minutes of appearing in-game (before I even got randomly PK'd once!), so that's something.

I was never a DT kinda guy, primarily because I don't really like MMORPG PvP.
But I did create a few annoying characters there, just for the purpose of running up to higher level people and starting my autoattack while typing various phrases into the chatbar. I even managed to kill a guy once. He had PK'd me on login so I chased him down and started attacking him in front of his friends.
At first he didn't react, he was about 5-7 levels higher than me. Then he realized I might actually kill him so he started to try to heal, and thankfully for me he fizzled. His fellow monarchy members were standing around LOL'ing at my attempt and also not paying much attention.
There were many "WTF"s and "Oh shit lol" in the chat when he died. I stood there jumping in place as the rest of them attacked me.

I really like how level isn't everything in AC, mostly due to there being no inherent bonus to leveling up (aside from skill credits). A level 5 dude can do meaningful contributory damage to a level 100 mob if he uses a damage type/element that the mob doesn't have the skills to avoid. Hell, even in PvP an unarmed level 1 character can tip the scales between two level 100s; the level 1 guy might never hit or do damage, but he's sapping the target's stamina with every swing like anyone else.
Man, I miss AC...I really hope they put up an update or something, I'd like to play again...just not sure I have the energy to re-learn so much for the millionth time.
Apparently they've really overhauled the combat system? Like, they scrapped racial weapon skills, gave everyone arcane lore and a flat amount of points, and so on. Now races are essentially alternate skins and a few minor buffs, not a difference in trained / untrained skills.
I swear, every few years I go back to AC for a few months. It feels a lot like a MUD now. The high end content is only for the folks that play religiously, there is only high end content, and basically the entire world is a ghost-town of semi-attended bots outside of events.
I will say that the game content, the story and the npc dialogue and the quests and what not, have held up remarkably well. Whenever I go back, I basically write down a list of the best quests (sword of lost light, bandit dagger, frozen lich dungeon, helm of lost light) and run them in sequence. Then I almost immediately unsubscribe. I will say this though, I would give my left nut for an AC progression server, but they've said they can't actually do that since old versions of the source have been lost to time.

I just discovered the Facility Hub after several hours of playtime, primarily due to dismissing the tutorial and introductory stuff out-of-hand. So many quests. And with Decal (and appropriate map plugins), navigating the dungeons doesn't make me want to hammer rusty nails into my dick, which it otherwise would given the complete lack of 1st-party map systems.

You'll commit the layout of every dungeon to memory like we did in the old days and you'll like it.

Some of the layouts are ridiculously confusing, but yeah, I recall the old days. I also remember having to enchant each piece of armor individually, which is another thing I'm glad they got rid of. Now I can grind for GSA and have the choice at the end involve a weight/AL/appearance tradeoff, instead of immediately going Amuli because fuck casting 5 spells each on 6 different Celadon parts.
The only thing I find myself really missing are the familiar old textures, which I wish there was an option to switch to. I guess I kind of miss the old travel shenanigans, too, but it's my own fault for being lazy and taking the hub portals.

Not to completely derail the thread, but I still remember most of the original zones in EQ... I never played AC too much, but I come back here periodically and think about subbing.

Primary example of why AC will always be the best.
There is literally no other game where this could ever happen ever.
The reason this was possible is because while you are basically weaker, there are no in game mechanics making level auto matically turn you into a god simply because you are out of the +- 5-10 range. As in, Glancing blows.
Also, the fact that when you attack at opposite hights you actually just plain get a solid chance to hit anyone.

Not to mention I was a melee and he was a mage. At lower levels, at that time in the game, I was probably on equal footing or better even with the level difference.
Playing on DT and flipping out every time I see the "Someone tried and failed to asses you!" (also whenever I see red dots ever) is still a blast. Also, at least according to the whining I see on the official forums, heavy melee with Dirty Fighting and Void Magic is the current OP clusterfuck. Open with a Void DoT, start thwacking mid with your sword, get hilarious stacked DoTs to go with already-decent melee damage.
I hate this thread. I hate it because I hate that I am not 12, playing asheron's call for the first time. Nothing I can do. I will never be 12, and I will never be playing Asheron's Call for the first time. That is depressing.

It was fucking magical wasn't it? I have incredibly vivid memories of what was happening, and being totally...a part of it.
I first played Asheron's Call in beta when I was 14, the summer between 9th and 10th grade, I had no clue what I was doing and it was amazing. I played so much AC in high school.
AC was my first MMO, too. Once you get past the archaic interface (and get Decal), the game holds up well to the nostalgia. Plus, you have the various conveniences that have gone into the game over the years (the Town Network and Facility Hub), so you can actually do all those dungeon-diving quests without having to spend hours wandering around looking for the entrance.
If I were to come back, I'd totally make a thrown weapons character.
Gearknight specializing in cooking and thrown weapons named Iron Chef. Doooooo it.
And make sure you roll on Darktide. Being able to witness a dozen max-level players brawling in Holtburg is worth the being ganked occasionally* by people camping the TN/FH/popular lifestones.

I remember back before I made my Axe character, I picked up a set of the fantastically horrendous GSC, What were they thinking with that color scheme? Went with that over Amuli so I could use the Sleeves of Inexhaustibly later.

GSC isn't worth it. Celdon armor is more than twice the weight of Amuli/Alduressa, while only providing 20AL more.
Man.. my mules were pimpin when I retired... My level 12 wanted to make him an alchemist but never actually gave a shit so I just dumped everything in to strength character? Pre-patch GSA and a purple olthoi helm... My level 65 archer that was the reason I made an alchemist then I got bored of being an archer... PP-Hoary robe and a purple olthoi helm.
My Mage that I actually played ALL THE TIME... super awesome black/blue celdon armor...
And then there was Bendery... oh god I did nothing but make friends on that character.
I miss this you guys
Man, i still have ALL my screen shots... all 800ish
Should post them up on something like imgur... I miss AC terribly, but going back to play it feels so empty due to the lack of player population; like playing a BBS game by yourself.
