Hey I JUST installed this game, and I was about to make my first evar guy for any game like this (most intensive RPGs i've played have been Mass Effect and FFVIII).

What should I make? I'm leaning towards Elf Mage or Human Warrior right now. Without giving away ANY spoilers, what do you recommend? Or does it really matter?

Redhead being Leliana? Yes you can. She's harder than the others, though, to reach its conclusion. You need 100 approval rating or near to... get invited to her tent.
That's ok. I'll just have to buy some more shoes.

Man, the zombie fight at Radcliffe castle is ridiculously hard, they just keep coming. Not really sure what I can do either, Morrigan is the best AOE I have and she doesn't even have any damaging AOE (just the stun shout).

It doesn't help that the knights in the first part of the fight run into burning oil to surround one zombie so that hardly any of them are left by the end of that fight.

Ugh I'm having very serious trouble getting start in fear of fucking myself in terms of builds.

Is this one of those games where if you don't go down the right path you are kinda boned or is everything pretty valid aside from going the completely unfocused (only taking 2 talents in each branch type deal)?

If you manage to create anything but an awesome character, you're challenged.

It's shockingly well balanced, especially compared to similar D&D-related CRPGs. I don't know if doing a super wide spread of skills for warriors/rogues is a good plan, but if you pick one or two large areas to specialize in you'll be completely fine.

Technically all of that is a spoiler. And theres more than one way to resolve that situation.

I gave it to her, but I have no idea what your spoiler is about. I'm kind of wishing I hadn't opened it, to be honest.

    She
kissed me and made pillow talk when I gave it to her. Unless something else comes of it later, I gave it to her not long before I got dumped into the Fade, and I'm still working through that sequence.

Yes, but you won't need to max it out or anything.

It helps for scouting and drawing baddies into specific choke points. Also, you can get off a backstab before a fight, lob an acid potion at archers and laugh, etc.

So I got Wynne today. Man having a dedicated really changes the game from hard as hell to not to bad. My group right now is Shale, Morrigan, Wynne and my dual wielding warrior of doom. I miss having a rogue around, so many different chest I cannot unlike it drives me nuts.

    On the mages tower:
I found the sloth demon fight and the fights in the fade to be a ton of fun. Man sloth took every battle form and lots of tactical use of my abilities. But man beating shit out of him was a good feeling for all the shit he gave my group.

The last fight verse Uldred was actually pretty easy. The litany prevented the adds, Morrigan and Wynne kept the creature stunned. Topped it off with Shale taking the blows and my guy just ripping him a new one with his dual swords. But after killing him I felt like a hero finally. Redcliffe had such a bittersweet ending.

As near as I can figure, you start with 2 at character creation, you get a free talent depending on origin, and one per level.
So, at level 20, you'd have 21 points + your default origin talent.

    Create a Mage

    Get Cone of Cold

    Win.

to balance against the awesome Win of Cone of Cold everything you wear will make you look like a complete and utter retard. I can't imagine the guy sitting down at Bioware designing the Mage gear and thinking "yeah that looks cool and totally not like you're wearing drag or an embroided sofa"

Oh anyone notice their party slowly moving to the darkside as the game progresses? My party first was my guy, dog, Allister and Morrigan. Allister and I were buddy buddy, dog was dog and Morrigan kind of tagged along a little.

But recently it is more Morrigan, my character who is turning darker by the day, Shale and Wynne because she heals me. My banter is more about crushing heads and laughing at small children dieing than it is about saving the world. Is it only me getting a party like this?

Oh and heard the boob banter between Leliana and Morrigan that was classic.

MUCH, MUCH larger. I've seen the tiny dragon in a video. Oh yeah, nothing like the ones you get to fight later. And they will tear your shit up.

And speaking of dragons and their ilk, does anyone seriously know where to get more drake scales? I had enough to build the first set of drake armor from Wade's (he is awesome, by the way). He wants to try again, but I need more scales. I only have two left, and the temple where I got them is clear of them. I haven't come across the "dragon" buddy described, so perhaps I'll come across more drakes somewhere?

I found Redcliffe Village quite easy with two tanks. Alistair and I are both sword and board warriors, and we really had no problem being surrounded by dozens of foes. Wynne healed and Leliana went around backstabbing people.

It also helped that I had lots of pre-order and DLC armor equipped on them, plus this ridiculous sword you can easily forge that has three rune slots and lots of damage and stat bonuses. Those items, specifically the Blood Dragon Armor from the collector's edition and the Warden's Commander armor from Warden's Keep, make the game a little easy. You just have so much damn armor and stamina from the two of those, you become invincible.

I freakin' hate mages. Rushing them with a melee dude is just asking to get a Cone of Cold to the face.

The way I've been dealing with them is to engage them with Morrigan to get their attention, then smash their frail bodies with my melee guys while they're distracted. Either that or just nuke the crap out of them with area of effect spells.

When facing a large group of baddies, I always try and kill the mages first. They can dish out some serious damage.

    concerning getting the reaver specilization...
do I HAVE to kill leliana? I mea, I really don't care about her but she's got maxed lockpicking and is my only lock picker at the moment......that would be really annoying passing up tons of locked chests....
I didn't go the Reaver route, but why do you have to kill Leliana? Is it because she's in your party and she disapproves of destroying the ashes? I assume it relates to siding with the cultists, and if you have Leliana and Wynne along, who are very religious, they won't be too happy. I suppose if you want to keep her alive, don't bring her along. Head out and then swap in someone less religious and "good".
well, it would be one hell of a run back, and I'm not sure if the cultist would even let me leave. can anyone confirm is this is possible? or even better, know of another rogue I can recruit with atleast 2 ranks in lockpicking?
I don't know if the cultists will let you leave, but I can confirm that if you bench Leliana, you don't have to kill her, but she may want to leave your party afterwards if you aren't a good enough liar. The only other rogue party member starts with zero ranks of lockpicking.

Your best option, however, is probably to just go ahead and kill Leliana (or try switching her out if you'd rather walk than fight), unlock Reaver, then reload your save before destroying the Ashes, choose not to destroy them, and spit on Kolgrim's corpse on the way out (after a brief interlude creating said corpse). Specialization unlocks aren't restricted to a playthrough, so you can be cheesy that way.

    Re: drakes:

In addition to the crapload of drakes in the temple (which gave me six scales) I recall there being a handful in the mage tower, though I didn't get any scales there. They might have been the baby ones, though. I forget.
