I don't want to get into another argument about Apollo Justice vs. the rest of the series, but there were plenty of things wrong with that game that were not "He isn't Phoenix!".
Case three is all that's really wrong with Apollo Justice, and the absence of certain characters from the first 3 games without any explanation.
Ema makes up for it.

Like which characters? Detective Gumshoe? He's incompetent, he probably got fired in the seven years.

This is Japan. He was promoted obviously.
He had a declining budget in every game.
And it technically isn't Japan. Haven't you noticed how ambiguous about where the game is happening everyone is?
Well, finished #4, aside from the beginning it was actually one of the easier cases.
I guess you could say I shot through to the heart of the matter? Yes, I'm patting myself on the back for that.
Excellent ending. Emotional without being too touchy feely, lots of character growth for Wright and Miles, and a very excellent sense of crucifying the badguy to the wall.
Oh yeah, and I'm a Wright/Maya shipper now, deal with it.
Since case #4 is technically the end of PW1, should I move on to the next game? Or finish case #5? Which makes more story sense?
You will find a kindred spirit in a certain little girl you'll soon meet.
I'd recommend doing 1-5 first! It takes place at that point chronologically and sets up a few points and mechanics for later in the series (Apollo Justice, that is).

Exactly. It also applies to America. They kicked him upstairs to where he could do no harm.

Case five takes place before PW2. There's some contradictions in the fine details of what happens in the intermittent time period since PW2 wasn't written with case five in mind, but I'd still say play it first.
Also the first witness is going to make you want to scream. She's one of the hardest to crack in the whole series, I think.

So come on, what was your reaction, in text form, to realizing how you could prove what you needed to prove at the very end to make it all come together?
It was the latter I felt a surge of EUREKA at! (I know my Andrew Jackson history which helped) The former was more a dawning sense of schadenfreude that that bit of evidence was going to murder the murderer.

Wait what does that situation have to do with Andrew Jackson?
Are you sure you're not thinking of James Garfield?
Took a bullet to the chest in a duel over his wife's honor. It was never removed from his body because it was too close to his heart.
When I heard the line of questioning about how he didn't have a CHOICE but to take the bullet with him. Well, the rest was obvious to me.
Now that I think about it,
Von Karma
does vaguely remind me of Old Hickory physically.
In another hilarious tie in. At his funeral in Jackson's pet parrot had to be removed because it was swearing too much. That's how fucking hardcore he was.
The final piece of evidence presented I felt more smug about than thrilled. A final, "TAKE THAT!" if you will. :P

Ah okay, I thought you were specifically talking about the
metal detector, and how they tried to use a metal detector to find the bullet in Garfield's body after he'd been shot.
Completely unrelated to PW but the most badass thing AW did was personally attack a man who tried to assassinate him. When help arrived they had to save the assassin from Jackson. You don't get more awesome than that unless you don't commit genocide or upend your nation's banking system.
And yes, Andrew Jackson was the closest thing America has ever had to having a Terminator in the White House, with all the good and bad that goes with it.
So I'm starting my investigation with Jailbait and Roy Rogers. Should be fun.
Ah, Ema Skye. I still need to start Apollo (I just finished T&T not that long ago, so I'm taking a small break), but I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

I'm not clear how we got on the topic of Andrew Jackson, but he was pretty badass. He inspired a character in Samurai Shodown VI.
Anyway, I really liked Apollo Justice. But I have one big problem with it (major, major spoilers ahoy):
Phoenix's backstory is just too depressing. Right after T&T, he loses his badge and becomes a nobody. Sure, he doesn't act depressed or anything and he has this secret mission going on the side, but his quality of life overall seems pretty miserable. I'm pretty sure he isn't drinking "grape juice" in the Japanese version, is he? And the one thing that might make his life seem better (friends) are noticeably absent. Did everyone just abandon him when he lost his badge? It's damn depressing to me, and overshadows an otherwise fun game.
I spent three games thinking of Phoenix as the coolest lawyer ever. He had an awesome mentor, an awesome rival, and he seemed unstoppable. And then Capcom goes and ruins his life for apparent reason other than to provide a backstory for the final case. It was a good final case, but not good enough to make up for the resentment I felt at this.

I'm pretty sure he is in the Japanese version as well. The point is that he's only a pseudo-hobo, he appears to be an alcoholic gambler but he's actually incredibly dangerous.
And there's no way he could have gotten anything done without Edgeworth's help.

No, I'd wager most just aren't around.
Maya and Pearl are off leading the Fey clan and Maya in particular is the Master of the Kurain Channeling technique.
Edgeworth and Franziska are probably back in Europe, and it's easy to assume Gumshoe might have followed edgeworth as well.
That really only leaves Larry and the Judge as remaining Main Characters, and the judge does in fact see Phoenix.

Not so much really!
I mean it is a fine game and you shouldn't avoid it but in my opinion at least it's noticeably worse than the first three.

This is where opinions collide.
I would never describe any of the Ace Attorney games as being 'worse.' They're all good. It's just a matter of how good when compared to each other.
"If you are seeing this picture of Klavier Gavin, you have just lost your virginity. NO EXCEPTIONS!"
And that's all I know about Apollo Justice.
Noticeably worse cases though and too easy. It's like the first game but without Case Four and Five.

The rest of Apollo Justice was pretty good (MULDOOOOOON) but Ema Skye blows everything else out of the water.
Also I agree with Rex. The only possible fanwanky explanation I ever came up with was
