    VAMPIRE THE MASQUERADE BLOODLINES

I can't believe only one person has mentioned this. It's by far the most immersive RPG I've ever played - and the whole game is totally voice acted (and brilliantly - John DiMaggio, Grey DeLisle and others star) and beautifully written. The game itself is buggy as all hell and falls apart toward the end, but it is a game that must be played. It is the only RPG where I've ever actually felt that I was "role-playing", rather than simply maximising my stats so I could crit for 3 million.

    Deus Ex?

Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines and Knights of the Old Republic are both up on Steam and thus easy to come by as well. Vampire's more of an action RPG close [enough] to Mass Effect and KotOR's a less good BGII. :P

I can't believe every time someone can't believe no one else has brought something up, someone else actually has.

No, really. We both win. Vampire's that good enough to be suggested twice. :P

While I had fun with all three Shadow Hearts games, I've played the first recently and I don't think time has been kind to it. The character animation is especially eye-bleeding.

    SHLOOOOOP SHLOOOOOOP

The biggest problem with SH1 these days is the ring. The colors are so faint that I can't even play correctly anymore. In 2 and 3 the areas for hitting are really bright. It's obvious when you're in the range. In 1 though I have to really pay attention. However the first game has the best atmosphere. It's actually creepy. Lots of blood and dead bodies and such. I think the first game holds up well if it's the first one in the series you play. Going back..... not so much.

I do recommend the series though, but anyone who says you can play the sequel without playing the first is a liar. No, you cannot play the sequel without playing the first. You will be lost. The whole plot of the game starts because of what happened at the end of the first game, and the good ending to the game relies on knowledge of the first game. However, the 3rd game is standalone. Go ahead and play that, it's pretty good. It's no 2, but it's still fun.
SH1 is definitely my favorite as far as general atmosphere, plot, characters, soundtrack, etc. go. It tends to have reasonably short dungeons too, which for me is preferable to Covenant's sprawling non-Euclidean labyrinths. That said, there are a fair number of gameplay archaisms (the worst being the method of getting fusions) and a not terribly jazzy battle system.

Covenant loses a bit in terms of mood and characters and becomes a little more intentionally silly. The plot also kind of nosedives on the second disc. Generally battle system improvements though, as you mentioned. Only problem is that it ends up being ludicrously easy after you pick up Arc spells.

Third has by far the best battle system, but the lamest cast and a plot that doesn't do much of anything until like 90% of the way through.

I favor the first, but then I'm fairly forgiving of its flaws. All three are worth playing though.

But at least I didn't say this. :P

I'd argue Deus Ex 'felt' more like an intelligent mans FPS then a full blown RPG, but it is nonetheless the game I compare most Action RPGs to. And Vampire, of course.

Just pick up Dragon Age: Origins. It takes everything awesome from Buldur's Gate 1/2, Planescape, Fallout, Mass Effect, and KOTOR and makes this truely awesome experience. If it were a novel, it'd be fucking Tolkien.

It really is that good. Stellar voice acting. Incredible, vast, and epic story (epic in the classic sense too). It is hard as nails and long as life. Also, six origin stories to enjoy at the start.

It really is better than the classics, and I love my classics. It hurts to say that.
EDIT: Oh, and get it on PC. I am not sure what the fuck is going on in the console version. It is too different though.

He actually said that he liked it but hit a wall after a while where he was tired of playing it. Which is more understandable.

Also, you guys need to stop talking about Dragon Age or I'm going to fall off the fucking wagon and spend money on a new game while I've already got an enormous backlog.

Can you just run around enemies in circles and never get hit, just like every other diablo clone? I would ask in that thread, but I don't want to sound like a troll. My friends tried to get me involved in BG2, but it was about the most boring thing ever.

I almost made this topic, as I've been craving a great RPG. I WILL be playing DAO, but my girlfriend has demanded I let her get it for me on my birthday, in 2 weeks. So I need something to tide me over. My friend has a copy of both BG1 & 2, but I was wondering if it's neccessary to play BG1 first? Will I be missing out on anything?

If you've only got 2 weeks, I'm not sure if you have time to finish either one of them. You're probably better off starting with BG1 so that you won't be frustrated by the decrease in awesome if you do them backwards.

It's very similar to BG2, with some Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic elements mixed in. If you didn't enjoy bg2 at all then you may hate DA as well. I just think of a different type of game when I see Diablo clone, something more like Sacred or Titan Quest, which are action rpg's with heavy focus on loot. Dragon Age is more of a traditional group based rpg, where loot is important, but it's more focused on cool abilities and questing. DA's battle system is pausable like BG2 so if you enjoy very tactical battle systems it may tickle your fancy. Often the difference between being wiped and demolishing a group of enemies comes down to controling a mage with stuns and shit or using taunt abilites to keep aggro on your tanks.

Yeah, basically I'm just wondering if it offers any gameplay, I might give it a rent based on what you said. Maybe I didn't get too far in BGII, but all I remember was running around in circles, because none of the enemies could turn fast enough (even the bosses). I suppose I could've made it more challenging on my part, but that's just bad design on theirs.

e: Basically, Borderlands wet my thrist for a loot collecting game, but I need substantial gameplay to back it up.

It seems like he's confusing the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games with the older PC ones. Wasn't BG DA a diablo like hack n slash, where as the older pc ones everyone swoons over were more like turnbased dnd style rpgs?

Well DA doesn't suffer from that particular fault, at least. If you try to run around an enemy you'll just be hit over and over, it's a much better idea to be attacking. The game is also gorgeous. I'm playing on pc and I keep the camera zoomed in with the mass effect style camera so I can appreciate the level design, then when I hear the battle music start I zoom all the way out so I can manage my group better. It's an amazingly fun game, and while it's not literary grade writing it is very well constructed.

edit: It could be that you are confusing the action rpg baldur's gate with the originals. The originals are much, much better than the diablo-esque console versions, even if they are overhyped a bit by the PA community.

Oh, I was under the impression that it's a hack n' slash, with spells, and loot. I'm wasn't saying it copied diablo or anything, just that it's in that genre. What is it then?

I keep hearing it's fun, but I heard the same thing about BGII, and well, hitting the attack button a million times, finding a new weapon, then hitting the attack button a million more times is about as fun as filing your taxes.

It seems like he's confusing the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games with the older PC ones. Wasn't BG DA a diablo like hack n slash, where as the older pc ones everyone swoons over were more like turnbased dnd style rpgs?

Yeah, it was. I don't remember ever being able to run around enemies without getting my ass reamed in the PC versions.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure it WAS BGII (though I'm pretty sure it was a BG game); they all kind of blend together in my head. It's obviously not my favorite genre, but I'm trying, damnit!

Whichever it was, you could most definitely just keep circling an enemy while attacking with impunity. I guess I've tried many of these types of games, but I've never really felt engaged in the actual gameplay, or challenged in the least. I'm hoping DA:O changes that tradition, so I'll check it out.

    Thanks for the input.

Yes, the game you have described does not sound at all like BG2.

Yeah, you were playing Dark Alliance. While amusing, they weren't anything like the PC Baldur's Gates

Somebody on these forums once told me that it would be impossible to play the BG games with 3rd edition rules. I didn't get much in the way of elaboration. Is that an accurate statement? Because that's the primary thing keeping me from replaying those; once you go 3rd you don't go backwards.

Yeah, I read a bit more of the OP in the DA thread, and it seems more like a ME or KotOR thing. Which I guess is more like the real BG games? I don't know, I've pretty much pigeon-holed everything in that genre for a long time now.

In any case, I'm a bit more interested in it now.

I think this post needs more acronyms.

Please, let me suggest the wonderful tales of Grandia and Grandia II. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE those games to death and glad I spent so many lost hours into them.

But not Grandia III. WHO WANTS TO RPG WITH THEIR MOMS!? >:/
