Chrono Cross is a fine game, but it hasn't aged particularly well, like most PS1 gems.

    Vagrant Story, fortunately, has.

Also, X-2 had a fun combat system. The story(or what amounted to one) was silly, though it was fun to play.

I'm surprised there's people who own PS2s that haven't played Nocturne. It's by far the best RPG on the console, if not of its generation.

Well, it was reprinted a few times. It's not impossible to get, just difficult. :P No more than the likes of Planescape: Torment.

    Probably easier.

I like Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter. When I first bought the game I hated it because it was so different than the other games in the series I had played. Now I like the gameplay a lot more because they created a much more elaborate battle system that does more than the standard "stand in one place and trade blows" combat.

Now you have Action Points to manage that allow you to move around the battlefield and attack. One of the biggest changes is that your mage, Nina, primarily creates magic circles that your two other characters have to knock enemies into for massive damage. You can also customize your characters' skills. At one point I had a hard time choosing between a skill that regenerates your character's Action Points when he is attacked and a skill that would easily push enemies into Nina's magic circles.

Here's a couple of vids highlighting how much of a departure BoF5's battle system was:

Nocturne can be a nasty shock to the system if it's your first experience of the Shin Megami Tensei universe. It was the first SMT game I picked up and I crashed and burned hard on my first attempt. It wasn't until I got the Digital Devil Saga games and Persona 3 under my belt that Nocturne became a dream of a game instead of a nightmare.

I love Nocturne, but it really isn't for everybody. Its brutally hard and incredibly minimalist, and defies many standard RPG conventions. If you're a fan of bright worlds and talkative characters I can imagine Nocturne being pretty terrible.

Its still a great game and all, but I consider it more of an arthouse RPG than a mainstream one. Great game, not for everyone.

Nocturne is one of those rpg's for people who don't like plot or characters. I played it for a couple hours, and when your game is populated by basically one person, and he doesn't talk, it can start to feel pretty grim. I plan on taking another look at it when I get the time, but I never really understood the love for it.

the plot and characters are actually very well-developed, they're just

    compressed

the quartet of human beings you encounter over the course of the game probably have better motivations and personalities in their time onscreen (which is maybe fifteen or twenty minutes each, and that's being generous) than a lot of JRPG's fit into fifty hours

Yeah, taken at face value, there doesn't seem to be much going on, but read between the lines and you'll find there's a lot of depth to those sparse bits of dialogue. Also, much of the characterization comes from the demons(and ghosts) you meet along the way.

Shit, it's alright, but nowhere near that good. Digital Devil Saga is better than Nocturne.

And while Chrono Cross is rough looking like pretty much most 3D from then, I'd say it's one of the better aged ones.

They did not add another character, but I can honestly say I was surprised that Piastol didn't join at the end of her sidequest. She seemed perfect. Anyway I would recommend SoA, but my opinion on it would be biased as hell. I have sort of an infatuation with one of the characters.

I would recommend playing Persona 3 before Persona 4. Which has a better story and characters is up for debate, but mechanics-wise, P3 is a lot harder than P4, so going from P4 to P3 might lead to some undue frustration.

I was going to say something about how Fina sucks and Aika is totally superior, but then I realized that the fact that I don't hate any characters in SoA is another reason why I would recommend the game. Except for Enrique I don't think there was a single character in the game that I disliked. Even your crew is pretty lively.

Regarding RPG's that'll grab you and never let you go, has anyone played 'Agarest: Generations of War'?

It just came out over here in Europe but I'll be damned if I can find a single review of it. What's it like? Will it grab me and never let me go? Or will playing it make suicide seem like an attractive alternative?

I'm wondering whether I should grab it now or wait for a price drop - or just avoid it completely.

I find it very fascinating the different reactions to Final Fantasy X.

I mean in Japan, this is THE favorite Final Fantasy game. In the west it is Final Fantasy VII, which came in at 2nd in Japan.

I've always wondered if this was purely a cultural thing? Or if they really screwed up somewhere in the translation department?

To me, it is one of the best RPGs ever but over the last however many years, I've seen so many people bashing on it for no reason particular reason. They always bring up the laughing scene though, nearly every single time. We get it, it was stupid but it was in context to what was being said at the time and took up 3/4 minutes in a game that can take over 100 hours.

Honestly I find both FF7 and FF10 shit - FF12 is where it's at. It's the only final fantasy I've played without any sappy love story and the story doesn't revolve around saving the world.

I got attached to Fran, Balthier, the blond dude you find in the prison and well pretty much every character except the "main characters" (sissy looking dude who wants to be a pirate, his friend, and the princess). I liked that a lot more. Also the story of "evil guys wanna use deus ex machina to fuck up your country real bad" is a lot more interesting than "emo guy with long silver hair aims to take down a meteor on the planet and fuck up the world for no good reason" and "hey we're stuck in some permanent cycle where people are summoned to- wait what?".

Yaaaay, RPG recommendation. Time to highlight your favorite Final Fantasy game and praise a SNES title of your choice!

...FF IX and Super Mario RPG.

Also, I'd highly recommend Baten Kaitos (especially the prequel), Shadow Hearts (definitely play the third part if you don't mind ridiculous fanservice and unfulfilled story potential), Paper Mario and Golden Sun (you don't have to READ the text boxes, guys! It's much more fun that way!). And I'd recommend Final Fantasy X. Yeah. Great battle system. Exotic flair unlike anything else. Interesting plot. Some really great characters. Maybe I'm just not the type for being irredeemably disgusted by certain bad elements, I dunno.

Anyway, I'm looking for a great RPG myself. Something that isn't piss-easy without resorting to douchbaggery like "OH WAIT YOU DIDN'T FULFILL SECRET CONDITION #35 WELL DIE THEN" (I'm looking at you, DDS). I don't particularly care for the story; it just shouldn't be too... grating. We're talking Grandia-3-grating here.
So, in short, a rather difficult RPG without an obnoxiously stupid plot. Any ideas?

10 didn't have an atrocious plot, but it did have atrocious voice acting, and that makes it hard to really distinguish the two. 12's plot was ok, but was just really boring, and for the most part didn't have anything to do with what you and the characters were doing. 7's plot was pretty good, it just somehow got tagged as 'emo' or some similar nonsense just because it had a main character who was trying to find themselves.

9 is still my favorite, but it's much more to do with the characterization than the actual 'plot'.

Suprised that no one's metioned Valkyrie Profile. First one was amazing but the plot was a little thin unless you stumbled into or used a guide. Combat system was top notch and for game play it remains one of my favorite console rpgs. VP2 wasn't bad but some of the changes they made to the combat system seemed to detract from it. The plot was better in it though and Bifrost is probly the most impressive things I've seen on the PS2.

I haven't read the rest of the thread, but if you have a PC made in the last 5 years, pick up VtM: Bloodlines. It has a good story, great characters, and fun gameplay.

On the console side of things, if you want something more obscure, check out Summoner on the Playstation 2 (it technically has a PC port, but good luck on that). It has a good politics-based story, but it doesn't really hand it to you, same with the characters. Lots of text. Combat is good, but kind of annoying due to the AI limitations.

Yeah pretty much. He's also kind of whiny if I remember correctly. Boohoo, my country is evil . In comparison to the other characters he's also kind of lame. However he has Justice Shield which is so useful that I don't even understand how I beat the game on DC without using him.

Any ideas?

    Demon's Souls :P

FFX is probably the greatest RPG ever.

Well, JRPG. I usually prefer western stuff.

it's definitely one of the most cohesive final fantasy games, but it's nowhere near the best JRPG and even within the FF series its superiority is debatable

honestly as long as the megaten series is around it's impossible to make a case for any one game topping the genre

Valkyria Chronicles if you have a PS3

Also, if you have a PS3 and don't have Valkyria Chronicles I will bug you until you buy it, because it's quite possibly the best game on the system
