If you have a Gamecube or a Wii, I'd reccomend Skies of Arcadia Legends. The main character in this rpg is unique because he is actually optimistic, quite a rarity among JRPG protagonists (not that there's anything wrong with that).

    ...

If you have a ps1/ps2 track down a copy of Suikoden or Suikoden 2. Now. Seriously, these are the cream of the crop of the series. They go for crazy money on e-bay though, especially Suikoden 2.

My guilty pleasure game is King's Field 2 (in Japan, King's Field 3) for the ps1. It's a first person rpg/dungeon hack and slash. If the graphics don't cause your eyes to bleed you might have some fun with it.

Another reason to grab Valkyria Chronicles: It was done by the Skies of Arcadia guys

So you have another protagonist who's cheerful and optimistic

Plus it has Vyse and Aika in it

I mean come on, it has motherfucking Vyse and Aika and Vyse gets better stats for running into gunfire

If that isn't badass I don't know what is

Same here, though I have played it before. Never completed it though and I can't remember why I quit out of it. I'll have to see if my computer will run it these days and devote some time to it.

You'll want to turn hardware acceleration down or the spell effects will have problems. I run XP and a modern graphics card, and even with tweaks, I had a complete freeze (couldn't even alt-tab out) if I ever paused the game during a spell effect, and I had a game breaking freeze when talking to Ravel that happened every time. Some things you just can't do anything about.

I didn't think it'd quite fit in, but since you opened that particular door, what the hell: the King's Field games are pretty bitchin' takes of the old-school single-dude-traverses-dungeons-and-shit-and-gaining-power-while-searching-for-the-magical-mcguffin roguelikes while throwing you a few bones and setting it up in a real-time first-person perspective. The first "three" (including the original JP-only one) are pretty ancient but The Ancient City is PS2-based and still holds up decently well enough and can get pretty fucking creepy because of the atmosphere designs and shit.

Also, you will die within the first five seconds at least once. :P

    EDIT: Yup.

Doesn't one of them start you off in front of a pile of ash or something and you step forward and fall into the lava underneath?

So I'm playing bg2 again and I just made Aerie dig through a pool full of blood. It was most pleasing.

Regarding RPG's that'll grab you and never let you go, has anyone played 'Agarest: Generations of War'?

It just came out over here in Europe but I'll be damned if I can find a single review of it. What's it like? Will it grab me and never let me go? Or will playing it make suicide seem like an attractive alternative?

I'm wondering whether I should grab it now or wait for a price drop - or just avoid it completely.

I don't know, it's made by Idea Factory. They've had a pretty bad track record.

Well, a past bad track record doesn't necessarily mean that it sucks. Maybe they got things right with this one... but the total lack of reviews doesn't fill me with confidence. I think - barring the appearance of a review - I'll do what I'm doing with 'Cross Edge' and will wait for a price drop. Maybe the Christmas/New Year sales will be good to me.

Fortunately my computer is positively ancient - never thought I'd say that :P - so hopefully I won't have any problems. Ah well, we shall see.

Edit: The Nameless One lives! So far, so good.

If you like King's Field you should try Demon's Souls, its made by the same people and took a lot of inspiration from it. (Loving it right now. I'm almost at tne end of my first game and I'm already looking forward to NG+)

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

to be honest I think they are both pitifully short, the pacing is weird and the writing is so-so
Yaaaay, RPG recommendation. Time to highlight your favorite Final Fantasy game and praise a SNES title of your choice!

...FF IX and Super Mario RPG.

Also, I'd highly recommend Baten Kaitos (especially the prequel), Shadow Hearts (definitely play the third part if you don't mind ridiculous fanservice and unfulfilled story potential), Paper Mario and Golden Sun (you don't have to READ the text boxes, guys! It's much more fun that way!). And I'd recommend Final Fantasy X. Yeah. Great battle system. Exotic flair unlike anything else. Interesting plot. Some really great characters. Maybe I'm just not the type for being irredeemably disgusted by certain bad elements, I dunno.

Anyway, I'm looking for a great RPG myself. Something that isn't piss-easy without resorting to douchbaggery like "OH WAIT YOU DIDN'T FULFILL SECRET CONDITION #35 WELL DIE THEN" (I'm looking at you, DDS). I don't particularly care for the story; it just shouldn't be too... grating. We're talking Grandia-3-grating here.
So, in short, a rather difficult RPG without an obnoxiously stupid plot. Any ideas?

So far, Lost Odyssey has impressed me with its difficulty. There are level caps in each area, so you can't just grind until everything is trivial. Bosses have had the right amount of challenge so far: two or three tries each, understanding the patterns and using the right strategies to win. I haven't been able to muscle through a fight yet.

Now that the thread was bumped, gogamer is having a sale where PST or either of the BG or IWD compilations are about $20 each. If you somehow missed them. (or lost the discs)

I love the King's Field games, both of the ones released in America for the PS1 and the one released for the PS2. Loves me some first person dungeon crawling.

I hope you've played Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land, because it has one of the best stories on the PS2.

Also has lots of first person dungeon crawling goodness.

Things I'm not looking for: tactical RPGs, and RPGs with a plot surrounding two or more countries at war with one another (FFXII, for example). Things I am looking for: anything with good characters, a fun plot (doesn't have to be great, FFVII wasn't the epitome of writing, but I liked the drama) and passable gameplay.
I guess it's a bit late for a recommendation, but Tales of Vesperia sounds like just the game you want. The characters are great, the plot is fun (although not great), and the combat system is a lot of fun. It's an action-RPG, so battles play out like 2D fighting games, but much more on the lines of Super Smash Bros than traditional fighters. Each character has a unique fighting style and a huge variety of moves to learn, so the combat never gets old. There's at least 100 hours of fun to be had, and best of all, the game is cheap.
