I'm really liking Vindictus. Granted, I'm only level 16 with 2 days of playing. But I will say this...it's a fresh break from the other action bar MMO's out there that I've wasted my life away with. It's free, and I've yet to dump any cash into it and I'm having a hell of a time with my friends.
I do enjoy the fact that the tank has to actually TANK. It's not about having amazing gear and hitting that skill button when the monsters broadcast their attacks in a GIANT FONT IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR SCREEN. (Shameless poke at WoW. I'll stop now). Having to bring up my shield and fend off the attacks and constantly grab the boss's attention is refreshing. Also, my character is hot. I'd hit that.

I say we make the Pirate guild WANG, but first we actually have to figure out what server were playing and what faction we want. Also months ago a guy and I were discussing this and he said he would make a new thread. I think he was waiting until it went F2P. For some reason PotBS has really low computer requirements which is fantastic for me since I can run it with only big problems in the starting town. Computer can't run most things made after 2006.
I was in Vindictus hard until I started partying up, because the peer to peer party system it has every party was like watching a story book cause no one could host a fluid smooth game.

It's about 50/50 for me. Some games are smooth... others not so much.
wasnt pobs that game Oboro liked because she could play economist?
anyway, woohoo someone correct me:
Pirates of the Burning Sea
A pirate game that didn't cut it as P2P and is now F2P/Freemium. The game offers a hefty dose of economics to keep the nerds amongst us interested, while there's also some other shit to keep everyone else happy.

Patching PotBS, since when I trialed I kept the launcher. Nice to know that you are limited a bit when you go F2P, but if you spend an extra 15 bucks for 1 month of subscription, you get 95% of the game, you just have to do more to get societies (Guilds) than "Captains club" members, and some sort've of epic quest. If you stay Free, you get less, but as I'm seeing it on this chart http://www.burningsea.com/page/f2p it is hindering somewhat, but I think it's still a good deal. Read if you want to see the differences between F2P, Premium (Spend 15 bucks once), and Captain club.
I didn't bother with PotBS when it first came out (Some friends bought it but I didn't see much point when Voyage Century was there for free). I'm liking it so far and might just stick with it!
The limitations on economy buildings is pretty fucking brutal on free accounts. Only two structures per character, only two characters per server. If I do stick with it, it might be worth a month sub just to get the ten econ buildings and increased character numbers.

Technically it is 2 on a server, but only because you can't change factions until the weekly reset (I think) is up, than you can switch to a new nation, keep your other-nation characters, but can't use them until the reset. Notice that its per Nation not per server.
Seems pretty debilitating anyways since for that week wouldn't your buildings get shuttered and waste the accrued build time? This conversation is purely about economy for me.
I mean, I guess you could jump around with multiple accounts to get all the econ you need, but with the hassles of a middle man (I don't know if you can mail items to other players), considering the econ building increase, character increase, as well as dockspace increase, it seems just dropping fifteen bucks is much better.
Of course, is it even worth that? I don't know, I haven't really gotten to the point where this is a problem, but I can see it cropping up.

I see what you mean. I'm on the fritz about whether I want to stick with my British character, or go pirate. I'd also like to meet up with any PA people, even if its just shifty.

I'm playing a fair amount. Spanish on Antigua and French on Roberts, though.
Downloaded PoTBS and in the 2-3 hours that I've farted around, I'm really enjoying myself. I went pirate, for shits/giggles and the starting town bleeds atmosphere. The ship battles have been pretty fun, and the 'land battles' have been OK. I must admit that I did let loose a little squeak of joy the first time that I figured out that I could pull an Indiana Jones and just shoot the dude point blank. I'm looking forward to seeing what the actual game is like beyond the little starting area and beginner quests, but so far it looks like I may be playing this for a while.
It doesn't hurt that my character has a curled mustache, top hat, and a glass eye. It makes me feel like a Gangs of NY Daniel Day Lewis, and it feels good.
I'm playing on the EU server if there are any other PA pirates around that'd like to hang out. I keep very odd hours because I'm living in Korea, so I apologize in advance. IGN: Charles Marlowe

Came across this one today, might have my kid give it a go.
In-browser (kinda) cartoonish MMO running on the Unity engine. Very cute and appears to be aimed mostly at kids. Bonus points for using Zelda-style heart meter for your life gauge. Quests involve killing X number of creature, or fetching X number of items. You can also catch butterflies in a net.
A skim through the OP didn't help, but I might have missed it- does anyone recall a FTP MMO announced (or already released, but going through localization for the US and such) that was meant to all take place within a virtual world (or rather, many virtual worlds all networked) designed to let the extremely wealthy in some cyberpunk-like future world live out their wildest dreams and bizarrest fantasies, all while wielding god-like power?

Sounds like Otherland.
Which was a MMO project based on the Otherland novels, but nothing has been said about it for quite awhile; so I'm pretty certain the project fell through.
Level R
A street racing game with an uninformative website. It seems like it's MMO-lite with a lobby to join races from. Smells like cheap Need For Speed.

Level R is the Euro version of Project Torque, which was shut down.

First, Valkyrie Sky, that shmup mmo, is shutting down on Monday or Tuesday.
Second, Pandora Saga, an alright-ish game that was plagued with wicked lag thanks to the servers being in Malaysia, is being relaunched by Atlus with (hopefully) better service, and a new, less-Engrish laden, translation.
I might give Pandora Saga another shot. It had some interesting mechanics that the lag really killed. Plus, with my new rig I can turn everything to max and it might look alright.

I remember looking at that MMO in the past but then hearing about it being unplayable because of the lag so i never tried it.
Also an update, i think Huxley is dead and vapourware. It isn't listed on ijji at all anymore, and it apparently went over to Webzen back in August, and i went and looked there, and it isn't listed over there anymore either. The game has been "in development" now since 2005 and after the closed beta test that one time nobody has seen or heard from it since. Pretty sure its dead.
Thanks for all the updates duders. I'm sad Valkyrie Sky is shutting down, because that game actually offered unique gameplay for a MMO. I guess I understand why it isn't a runaway success: there was way too much non-arcade related grinding to be allowed to play the damned game. There was this fishing mini-game you needed to play to gather mats for food you need to get stamina which you needed to run levels. Terrible.
Pandora Saga did indeed sound like a game that couldn't be too terrible.
Isn't it ironic that the 3D benchmark company that never released a videogame tried to finally make a full-blown game and in the end they couldn't even get it released as a F2P title? I would not be surprised if the company is going bankrupt any time now.
Huh that's weird I remember reading that Huxley was almost ready for open beta maybe about 4 months ago? That was from webzen anyways. I would be disappointed but from what I read it seemed to be pretty much the same mechanics of any other shooter/"mmo" e.g. lobby, standard game-modes and character unlocks with the exception of pve missions and better graphics.

Divine Souls, a more arcade-y take on the Vindictus style of action-mmo is getting into its OBT in a few days. May be worth a look for anyone who's hit the grind wall in Vindictus, or wants to check out the competition.
Same basic setup, as well. There are 3 initial characters to choose from (don't know about more being introduced later, like the 5 Vindictus will eventually have), they each have different play styles and weapons. Someone should check it out.
that War of Angels game comes out today, just a heads up.
Looks like a bland WoW but don't they all...
If the starting area is any indication, even that much is a bit generous. Maybe it picks up later, but the beginning quests are just too generic to give me any hope.
Divine Souls is kinda interesting. Very similar to Vindictus, with less lag and what seems to be quicker skill acquisition. But the dialogue and voice acting are far from good, there are bugs that cause the party to get stuck or the client to crash, and it generally doesn't seem to have anywhere near the polish that Vindictus does.
Yes. And I've played it before. I may try it again soon.
What I'm hoping is that, with less lag, the flanking mechanic will be easier to manage. And that with a better translation the initial quests won't be so confusing. I can also pray that the grind has become more manageable; before it was almost pointless to play after level ~10 unless you could party with a good bunch of aoe casters and just kite groups of higher level monsters into them.
For those of you who play/have played it (DFO that is)... I've got a 30 Exorcist, Grappler, and Asura and oh god I don't know which I want to play someone help

Then again, theyve been doing some changes, so it might have improved.

A cutesy in-browser game for kids with the generic MMO quests. Seems to try and ride the "social gaming" wave. Runs on unity web player.
