Soooo... Im an animation major. Ive been wanting to do this for a while, and See if anyone else has some interest. This threads for discussing Shorts, the festival route, and Independent studios. Short animation Is usually pretty easy to miss, but it doesn't negate its awesomeness.
For the interest of people being able too add animations they know of without following the niche of independent animation, I'll say Commercials can be included as well, since they are the right amount of time.
Heres some of my favorites to get the ball rolling:
I will continue to dig into my knowledge of short animations and post as what I can, but Im interested in seeing what Other people know about. I'll also post some more informed comments on each a little later.
Also, there was a steam punk-ish animation a few months ago that I found on the D&D forum. It was about two guys on an airship. They were all done in silhouettes. It had something to due with people and a sickness. It looked sweet and I think someone made the thread because it was nominated as an oscar/emmy/golden glode/some kind of US award ceremony canidate. Does anyone recall this thread/animation?

It's a great film all around, if a bit of a predictable story. The animation and characters more than make up for that though.
I agree that the story is predictable. There are also some points where I wish the characters separated a bit more from the environment. The Machines in this animation are rather amazing though.
Another one that has a pretty predictable story, but there's a pretty great atmosphere. Shorts usually have the ability to make a really simple concept pretty engaging for five or 10 minutes
It won along with Coraline for full length films in Annecy this year, Beyond the stunning technical/visual achievements of Coraline in the feild of stop motion, I think the film itself was underwhelming, story wise. Adam Elliot, who also made Harvey Krumpet up there, has an amazing dark sense of humor.
Kiwi is one of my favorite student animation, the strong emotion in it really makes it stand out from some of standard stuff that comes out of RISD.
I'm not sure if Adventure Time counts as an "indie animation."
It's pretty well known.
well, I don't really mean indie as in well known, just made by more independent studios. I'm pretty sure adventure time was made by Frederator Studios, who have funded a bunch of shorts, though they do alot of larger series (fairly odd parents, wow wow wubsy) But Oh yeah! cartoons were just shorts funded by the company, I think.
Lorenzo, a (never released, not quite the same as indie i guess) disney short that bounced around almost getting released with a new fantasia, was up for an oscar a few years back. Problem is it's really, really hard to find the whole short. Though one of your animation professor's probly have access to it, that's how I saw it.
Here is a film I like very much. It's also absolutely gorgeous:

I hadn't seen this one before. Nice twist on the anticipation. I'll try and think of some 3D shorts as well, maybe I can dig some links stuff from siggraph.
Poor Don Hertzfeldt. His style was so mercilessly ripped for those damn pop-tart commercials, and he hates commercialism so much. His ability to resist money is pretty damn astounding, but he seems to be doing alright without going down the typical animation route of making a style and then immediately leasing that style out to companies for advertising.
Hertzfeldt's unwillingness to commercialize is pretty great and all. I never saw the commercials that aped him so, but I can imagine it wouldn't be hard to at least get the style down.
He does offer a DVD (at a very reasonable price), which is nice to have.
I wish I could remember what the very first one was, but I remember that tons of people thought he had made it. According to Wiki, Hes also been offered cingular and United Airlines spots. I guess hes just going to stick to his guns and sell dvds.
I should buy one myself, I'm pretty sure I've seen it through other animation kids.
Goblins tends to cut the short format waaay down, which is effective for getting very pretty 30 second animations from students, but they start getting less enjoyable for people not already into animation. This is one of the longer ones, but you can continue to click around on youtube to see some pretty as hell stuff.
Less recent, and not short, but If you arent already into animation you might not have seen the secret of kells, but its streaming on netflix now. Heres one of my favorite bits of it:

Pyrats came up in the short film thread. I really like the animation in it, flows just right for me.

I'm more interested in where I can find a copy of the song in "Wood". The Dead Pirates don't seem to have actually released anything but that video.
I have one to add when it goes back up again.

This sort of mesh of 2D and 3D is pretty top notch, even for glorified chase sequences. Totally gorgeous to look at.
Of course goblins is always the standard of student animation, Heres one from over the summer:

Secret of Kells is inspired by illuminated manuscripts, and the style is something special.
