Mix and match RAM?

ShinyitalianguyShinyitalianguy Registered User regular
I was wondering if different brands of RAM could be mixed. I don't mean DDR3 and DDR2, I mean, for example, G.Skill and Crucial. Everything else is same, 240 pin, DDR2, just different brands.

Yes, you can even match different speeds (not DDR and DDR2 like you said) and it will down clock the faster stick.

Don't be surprised if you come across weird oddities though, especially since you're likely not going to be using ECC RAM.

You can mix and match, but I've found there are sometimes weird oddities that can surface.

If I started getting "weird oddities" I'd be running some Memtest and playing "Find the bad stick of RAM" not just chalking it up to mixing memory.

As long as the RAM is all capable of running at the same speed/timings together (down to JEDEC standards, if nothing else) it should be perfectly fine.

Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.

This is good advice. I've rarely had the same sticks of memory in my machines at the same time. You shouldn't have a problem, and memtest should be your first stop if you do.
