Steam?

I'm sure you guys have had a million of these topics, but i can't find anything about this specifically anywhere.

I really want to play Half Life 2 and the episodes, but my gaming rig is not online and never has been except validating XP last year. I've disabled every single service to do with the internet, networking and whatnot, got rid of anything that wasn't needed to run windows and games, so to get it online would be a nightmare since i followed a random list in a pc magazine to disable them, and have no idea where that magazine is anymore.

So it's really not an option to go online with that machine, i don't want to format it, and I really don't want it online anyway, it's the first pc i've ever had that isn't riddled with errors and problems, i'd rather just leave the steam stuff alone than connect it to the net.

I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is no, but i can't find out anywhere... It wouldn't work to plug my hard disk into my internet rig, install it, and then move it back would it? would there be a way to do that and then add the registry information manually when i'd moved it back? or is it more complicated than that? Does it access steam everytime you start the game?

TL:DR - can i install HL2 and steam on another pc then move the hard disk to another to play it, with a little registry tinkering?
