A correction for the bit on specializations in the OP:

Wynne does not teach Spirit Healer. It's only obtainable from a bought manual.
    Allegedly
Some people got it after talking to her about her Guardian Spirit. So there may be some obscure dialog path to take for it.

No, she does not teach it. The only way to learn spirit healer is through a tome.

edit: does anyone else have Wade's dragonbone armor? For some reason the helm doesn't come off during dialogs with that set.

It may not be the armor. I came across a bug in the game probably 3 or 4 times where my helm would not remove during cut scenes. I would have to fully exit the game and restart it to get it working normal and pulling my helm off. Its an annoying bug, but not a game breaker.

He's kind of crappy compared to Oghren and a main character who goes the two handed route though. He really suffers from having no specialization and getting only a single spec point at 14. I have no idea why Bioware thought it was a good idea to gimp him like that.

Ah, thanks all. I never put Sten in my party, so I didn't realize he was a 2h warrior. I'll stick with Allistair, despite playing for 8hrs, I haven't really had time to get new upgrades and such. I'll keep perservering.

I survive, but it takes a lot of healing. Which may be how the game is made. So much to learn.

But, Walking Bomb + 15 wolves eating a corpse makes for one hell of a show! :)

Al is pretty cool, get him some heavy armor, put some points in con...take only defensive talents. I've had my lvl 11 Al tank some ungodly critters. Also, use crowd control.

There is a way to reformat a new party member's skill and stat allocation on consoles right? Because otherwise Alistar is stuck with 3 levels worth of useless Shield talents.

That's completely WRONG, in all possible ways.

Alistair + Warden armor + big ass shield + as many Sword and Shield powers you can give him + Taunt and Threaten + lotsa con = Best tank in the game.

I sometimes wonder what Bioware was thinking when they allocated stat points to NPC party members. Zevran, whom I just recruited recently, has Lethality, which is all well and good, but he's got higher Strength than Cunning! And he has points in Willpower and Magic of all things!

    Why, Bioware? Just. Why?

The bioware toolset is a very passable save game editor. You can open up the save game and reallocate attribute/talent/skills points as you wish. It takes a little cross referencing, but there's already some good resources on how to do it. So far, doing exotic things like giving people abilities they aren't supposed to have doesn't work (eg, mages using non-spell talents, dogs/golems using human talents, non-casters using spells), however, all the mundane stuff works fine.

I switched Sten to a DW fighter through the aforementioned method. It just didn't feel right having him and Oghren take up nearly exactly the same role. I haven't noticed any problems* yet, and it's a good dozen hours in.

*The toolset itself can apparently cause problems though. Bioware has acknowledged that for a small minority, it can apparently corrupt games simply by being installed. Check the Bioware forums before using it.

Can I give myself the 2 backpacks I could have bought in Ostagar that way? I'd even deduct the cash. I just need the extra space, and I completely missed them.

Man, I love having Zevran in my party just for his chatter, despite that I'm rolling a rogue and really don't NEED two rogues. But, I will say that I fully expect to one day hear him exclaim "I AM! PUSS... in boots". Also, Sten needs to just shut the fuck up. I'm so very tired of his "you're wasting time not killing darkspawn" BS.

I'm surprised at how much I love this game. It really hasn't gotten the hype it deserved. It seems so big too, nothing feels rushed (so far).

I think one thing this game excels at beyond all other RPGs I've played, is I can't see the game behind the game. What I mean is, in a lot of other RPGs (especially ones with a good/evil bar) I can tend to see how things work, and how my decisions will effect (or won't) the world I'm playing in. With Dragon Age, there's so much uncertainty about many of my decisions. Often there's no clear good or evil choice, and there are a lot of shades of grey, which is really great. Maybe that changes later on in the game, but so far, it's pretty awesome.

I put Zevran in my party specifically for the banter I heard about, and he's been completely silent so far. Sten, on the other hand, has been hilarious in his interactions with Wynne.

I only just got Zevran this morning before going to work. So I'll probably get to hear some of his banter tonight or tomorrow. He just seems pretty cool. I wanted to run with the other rogue instead, but is it just me or are arrows absurdly expensive? And since most of her skills are in archery it seems a waste for her to do much else.

Not sure if it's been posted, but new gold glitch that has been confirmed by several people (I'll try it this evening).

It may only work on the 360, not sure. Worth a try on PC for those interested, but there are easier ways to cheat on the PC.
Go to inventory and put expensive item in your junk list
Activate a merchant, go to the junk page, and highlight the item
Press Y (to sell all junk) and immediately after press A to sell the highlighted item. You should almost push them at the same time but not quite

If successful, you'll end up selling the item twice. You can then go to the buyback screen and buy it for the selling price, basically having sold it without losing the item. Just repeat to rack up gold. If you mess it up, you can just buy it back without losing anyting.

Morrigan side quest spoiler unrelated to above.

So I got the quest to go end flemeth and went out there for a chat with soon to be a huge fucking dragon lady. She offered me the items in return for letting her walk away, but not wanting to give up the chance of murdering something huge (or losing alistairs trust fucker is always "no don't let this person live") I bagged me one baddy. Damn that fight was pretty long but oh so satisfying to see alistair riding the snake at the end.

    :winky:

    My thoughts exactly.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

    Arrows are free.

EDIT: And it's worth it to just ignore her archery skills and start on DW right away when you get her.

So it's just fire arrows that cost money?

If you don't equip any of the special arrows (fire, filth, etc) you can still use the bow with standard unlimited ammo.

Damn, that's not too bad then.

What about the issue where an archer will turn to melee even if they have the skill that makes them not get interrupted in melee when using a bow. And that once they're not in melee anymore, they won't switch back to a bow, but instead run into the fray. Is there a tactic for that?

Yeah it's called "don't give them a melee weapon so that they're incapable of doing this"

No its called "set their behavior to ranged in tactics"
