Man vs. Food - Boston / PAX-East eating contest?

ArcoArco Registered User regular
edited March 2010 in PAX Archive
This is either the best idea I've ever had, or the worst idea I've ever had.

I'm on a Man vs. Food kick lately, and guess where he went in episode 8 of season 1? Boston!

Restaurants he went to:

The Barking Crab

Highlights: A 4lb clam bake that includes a 2lb lobster, clams, corn, and potato, plus homemade clam chowder. Also a fisherman's basket, which is deep fried clams, muscles, scallops, and french fries. Huge portions. No lobster/crab crackers - there's a fucking ROCK at each table, plus a stack of paper plates to use as buffers.

East Coast Grill

Highlights: Cajun cooking. On the show Adam went to Hell's Night, where all the food was insanely spicy. If you wuss out you have to ask for the "antidote," and they'll bring you a creamsicle. However, they also chant "wimp, wimp, wimp" as they do it. Hell's Night frequently sells out.

Eagle's Deli

Highlights: Amazing sirloin burgers, plus traditional deli fare. Adam attempted to eat a 5lb burger (10 1/2lb patties) named the Eagle's Challenge, which topped out at 12 pounds after 2lbs of cheese and bacon, plus 5 pounds of fries. Burgers looked amazing.

Would anyone be interested in doing an eating contest, perhaps as part of Post-PAX festivities?

I hate eating contests but I love eating. Namely because eating contests usually end up being "eat until you puke" and that's not fun at all. But Eagle's Deli's Eagle's Challenge sounds like something I would want to try out. Man, 5 pounds of fries and a 12 pound sirloin bacon cheeseburger? I'm all over that.

I have eaten all 12 value menu items at Wendy's in one sitting. I have some really boring YouTube proof too.

If this actually happens, and we choose The Barking Crab or Eagle's Deli, I will participate.

To put the Eagles' burger challenge in perspective, here's a picture of their Godzilla burger.
    godzillai.jpg

That's a 1 pound burger, 1 pound of fries. The challenge is 5 times that big.

I will do this only if all participants unite inside of an enormous Kraken costume, collectively wandering from restaurant to restaurant. One group of folks will man the tentacles, lifting burgers, fries, drinks, and desserts from the table to the Kraken's maw in rapid succession, while another group distributes the food among the participants. We may also need a third group to distract the restaurant manager for long enough to keep us from being thrown out.

It should be noted the Barking Crab is on the water (literally on a dock)
    rear_photo.jpg
and while I believe they do have indoor seating, a majority of the place is either outside or under a canopy. I've only been in the summer so its possible its fine, but March on the water can be a little bit much for those not used to it. Its a nice place and very casual but just as a heads up

Ummm, forgive me if this is idiotic, but if the place is on the water, need we worry about those susceptible to seasickness?

No, it doesn't rock or anything. They also have a good amount of indoor seating and if you make reservations it won't be a big deal.

I've been to East Coast Grill and done the Hell Night. It's Wild. I don't think there will be one, they're usually around Halloween, early Dec, and mid Jan. Walking into the restaurant is painful because of all the spices floating around.

I take it he ate the Hell Pasta? I successfully ate it one year. Came back 2 years later when they started using the ghost chili and it's a whole other ballgame. The pasta definitely kicked me around that time but it was still so good.

Even if you can't eat insanely spicy the experience is awesome, lots of mid/low spicy stuff to eat.

So I went to Eagle's Deli today in Brighton MA. They recently reopened after a couple months of renovations. It looked like a nice establishment with a couple hdtvs (wings vs. pens and winter xgames). The place was packed but by the time we paid, we were able to snag a table.

The Eagle's Challenge was $55, but no one there was eating that fiasco this afternoon. I went with the $8 cowboy burger (1/2 pound burger, some sauce, bacon, onions, hold the cheese).
edit: My burger was ok (nothing special), the fries were good, and I was full for a good time afterwards.

Here are a couple pictures. Sorry they were all after thoughts so not the greatest photos.
    One of the place: http://img158.yfrog.com/i/hu5e.jpg/
    My burger after: http://img49.yfrog.com/i/n17c.jpg/

Btw, I did not see the wall of shame. It looks like they might have gotten rid of it unless it's in the kitchen or a moveable board...

I would suggest Eagles out of the various candidates. Burgers tend to be agreeable to most and it's not too expensive - the challenge burger is $55, but I shudder to think of anyone actually trying to eat it. The Reilly burger is big enough to dominate most mere mortals and it's only $28.

Friday lunchtime seems ideal as I doubt the schedule will be as packed as, say, Saturday/Sunday.

Not sure what the schedule, breaks, etc... will be like for the Enforcers at PAX, but if I can get away for the Friday lunch, I'll def head out there.

I've seen this place on Man vs. Food and Phantom Gourmet (for non-locals, it's a local food show that basically advertises/rates local eateries).

I'd be down to go, and could get a body or two in my car if it's needed.

Hey, so i live in boston, and there's this burger/dogs place 3 or 4 blocks from the convention center called Spike's Junkyard Dogs (http://www.spikesjunkyarddogs.com/ingredients.php). The food isn't great, but they do have a wall where if you eat a whole mess of hot-dogs, they'll take your polaroid and put it up. I think if you eat like, more than 10, you get a shirt or something, and i think the record is 14. You might want to check it out if you plan on eating copious amounts of disgusting food while in boston.

Also, you might try McGreevy's, which is actually a pretty good pub immediately across from the convention center that sells a $30 burger. here is the description.
