I seem to remember reading, years ago, that there's some special way to watch it that involves for example holding newspapers over your head when it rains in the movie while other people spray around with a squirt gun etc. Loads of other stuff as well, i've tried to google but i can't find anything. Does anyone happen to know, or have a link handy?

Thanks in advance,
Depending on where you live, there is often a midnight showing on Halloween where people dress up as the characters and act along with the film.
You are looking for "RHPS shout outs" or "call outs".
Are you arranging to do this in a theatre or at home with friends? There is soooo much that can be done that it might be a good idea to see if a theatre near by does midnight screenings and has a cast. It's ridiculous how much can be done.

There are some versions of the DVD that have the different cues also.
Just a heads up if you go to one, they typically have special things they do to Rocky Horror Picture Show "virgins."

Well over here we apparently don't have midnight showings or the participation thing. But i'm in this student group thing and i think we could easily get about 40 people interested in this. So i was mostly looking for ideas on doing one of these on our lonesome.
Just so you know, every organized showing I've been to has banned the use of water pistols (mostly for people putting something other than water in them) and also rice (because it is a huge bitch to clean up after). A few have banned bringing your own rice, but give you a little bag of it at the door.

Same with buttered toast. Most theatres and places dont allow you to bring that either.
However, most shows ive been to have sold "prop bags" for around $1 and that has all the stuff you need. If you are hosting your own, I suggest going this route. Also may need to acquire a license to show RHPS in a setting like that.
It's worth putting an add on craigslist asking for someone to help you organize. You might get someone whose done 100+ shows. It's seriously the most fun when you have people who know what they are doing, which makes it hard to start it anew.

Every version of the DVD I've seen with the cues has been terrible. The audio mix is all wrong, and you can't hear the movie when the people shouting the cues are on.
(I am in a student group that does do the Picture Show every year on Halloween, and we have banned the throwing props because of the mess--you will want to check with the school first if you want to do the throwing stuff.)
Yeah I've gone the past four years since they've started doing Halloween showings, even in our small town. It's cool because it's (A) in a historic old theater, and (B) they also have actors acting out the show on stage while the movie plays on the background. And our theater must be pretty cool in comparison, because the only rules are don't aim for actors or stage / screen, no live flame (so cells and flashlights are the norm for 'There's a light ...'), and no bring your own booze (but there is a bar in the lobby).
The stage show has only gotten better each year, and it's expanding. It went from one show the first year, now it's two shows, Halloween and the night before.
Also it's really interesting to hear the classic shout-out lines being mixed with new lines people come up with, or random things people throw out that just work and it's a good time all around.
