'Ambush' missions will teach you how to utilize your solos and your double teams to their fullest, by forcing you into a overwhelming battle where the odds are stacked against you. It will give you a small amount of troops as you face a army much larger than your own. Try going around the world to find solos, because you seriously will need them both in those kind of missions and the storyline stage battles. Remember to use Battle Cry frequently and whenever you can, as you probably already have learned from the mines.

Death Rack missions teach you how to use the commands other than Beacon. It gives you a feel for range and limitations.

Why the fuck am I still awake? I hate Post-Exam-Exhaustion. At least my friends helped me rape that exam. Who would have thought being an engineer required studying the secrets of the universe?

Dang, the new DLC looks pretty fucking cool. More than enough bang for the buck. I have my fingers crossed that they'll update it more.

On that note, as I'm planning on going back to this in a bit, is Baron Spam still kind of annoying? It never really affected any of the games I played, but those things rankle me in RTS games.

Very. Advanced players can wipe them out. I can too...every now and then. They still drive me crazy though. Double Fine is planning a patch on the issue, they need to find a finely tuned solution first.

I'm absolutely exhausted but can't sleep. I did get beat down a thousand times today. Then it lagged out when I was playing with Shatterdice.

Oh, sweet. I'm just glad they know about it and the game's getting some balance love post-release. I was surprised at how nicely tuned things were out of the gate, so if they make barons a bit more sane, this will be the first RTS I actually play online for real since Starcraft.

And by "for real" I mostly mean "Getting annoyed when I lose because I should have had him!". I hate the exploity-strategies because they rob me of that righteous indignation when I lose.

Ha Morkai is way better than me...

    So YOU'RE tardsmack.

lol, sorry about that. you got most of the heat from my frustrating loss just before our match. So I was INCREDIBLY agressive >.>

No need to be sorry I enjoyed it, seeing how I can try to get better. At one point, right before all the roadies came to the stage, I was debating about just stopping making units and just watching then I didn't have to make the choice as it wouldn't of mattered anyway. I will always do random, but I need to do some practice matches with DD as my skill with that faction is lagging behind.

Also how about some tips about Avatar combat? It seems like if you just hold block the 4th hit still does damage or is that players mixing it up by holding A? Does blocking stop any damage from guitar attacks? Do I need to be locked on to something to block it? After feeling Morkai's buzzsaw I think I had more success dodging with a side roll then countering over just countering.

It'll do damage if it's a rock kick or the unstoppable attack, those break guard. as for blocking with guitar attacks, I'm not really sure. I think it can stop damage over time, don't quote me though. because I suffered massive shock and fire damage, and I was on my last legs, the screen was pulsing like hell, so I drop to the ground and hold block, see if that does anything, I was suffering shock damage that should've killed me. I think it MAY just stop DoT. not totally sure.

Edit - also, no you needn't target something to block it, holding B is just the 'I'm gonna black everything at once" button. I like to block in the center of a Punishing party mob, that way my units can take out the enemy real quick. and usually the enemy avatar is pin-boy DT'ing, so having him shoot every pin at me is helpful.

baron rushes are a poor man's desperate tactic. play enough and you'll understand how to counter them. they never work on me (please ignore the fact that I play Ironheade only, and that I tier rush against other Ironheade players).

it's very hard to pull off consecutive wins using baron rush if your opponent knows how to counter it. you have to shut the opponent down completely to get it off successfully.

I miss the good ol' days.
Like two days ago for example.
Back when I was in the two digits.
    I went pretty damn far.
    68, to be exact. 8-)
Then suddenly all these leavers appear and I have completely bad communication with my partners in the team battles.
    Now i'm in the fucking 200s. o_O
If you think climbing the leaderboard is NOT tough, you've never been in the 100s.
Two dozen matches and I only move up like a ten spots in there.
If hypothetically I lose or my opponent leaves like a chicken shit and deliberately cuts himself from the game, I drop about 10-50 spots. :x
Which normally takes me a few days to recover from if it happens frequently.
Sadly, with my record it happens very often. D:
    533 wins and 63 loses.
I can't believe i'm losing at all really.
If you make a team I fucking dare you to battle GlurkDient and teh n00b age.
    I fucking dare you, it's a damn nightmare. :(
It's nuts how I can kick Glurk's ass in a one on one and it's pretty even with n00b, but together their like unstoppable.
I hate how winning a team battle makes a very little difference of my rank that is usually hardly noticeable, but if I lose it just...DROPS.

Cruel fact: When against experienced players, the Tainted Coil can be utterly useless in team battles because they can just easily gang up on your spawner units (nuns, warfathers, overblessers).
The more players there are, the more impossible it becomes to triumph with them.

As I think about it, my hunger for virtual blood envelops. I am deadset on a warpath in matchmaking and all these noobs and douchebags are beginning to aggrivate me. I want to get back to where I was (if not further) from before I battled Morkai earlier and yet I keep coming across asshole after asshole. I battled a guy with a mediocre rank in the Dry Ice Quarry and he was Ironheade. The Tainted Coil is probably the only faction I can imagine bum rushing the stage of their opponent within the first three minutes, but this guy decided to send a swarm of headbangers to my stage. I slaughtered them all and boom, he leaves. Disconnecting from the game and further dropping my rank, aggrivating me immensely. Then theres this Drowning Doom called Surreal Fantasy, whom I battled in Bladewoode. We were pretty neck and neck actually. As he was busy trying to take my geysers, I decided to take the oppurtunity while I still could and send my army to his stage since he took the brides with him. I was actually suprised how my Heart Cutters just flat out butchered the Broods and I didn't even use the double team at all, but maybe it was the Matyrdom. It was like three heart cutters, two pain lifters, a superior warfather, a overblesser, and a superior skull raker against two ratguts, a organist, two frightwigs, and like eight or so broods. My guys were having trouble at start, but I launched a bleeding death to aid them and....he leaves. Here I thought this guy would actually have the balls to stay to the end and lose honorablly considering his pretty nice record (like two hundred wins and twenty loses) and yet he walks the same path as the others. I swear out of like the two dozen battles i've had today, Morkai was probably my only real challenge. (unless you include custom matches anyway)

That's the thing man. I hate it too, and I even JUST lost to a baron spammer. I was pissed, so I got my 30 back, but for god sakes, A BARON SPAMMER. almost JUST lost another to a baron spammer, thank you roadies.

But dude, even I know you should be at least top 90, easy. I don't understand how half the people got up there with a W/L of 0/0.

    Wtf?

you know who the worse is though? SteelyDanzig. Played him today. both times as doom (Yay, a rare occurence) He quits on me. Twice. The man didn't even know he had Light of Dawn. It's like all he knows is fire barons, and now he's trying roadies, and all this other crap. Gooddd I hate assholes/douchebags, etc.

There was this one time I played steelydanzig 5 times in a day. Just randomly put together in matchmaking. I beat the guy 5 times in a row because he is so narrowminded. Baron rushing is just abut the only thing he can do. Keep in mind he does it well.

After I beat him 5 times he accuses me of using a modded controller for the "infinite combos" that I was using on him. stop crying and learn to block and counter like everyone else.

Well because Brutal Legend is one of my favorite games of all time, duh. :P
There was only one other game that I have been vilely addicted to, so naughtily enticed, so taunted to play over and over and over again and that was Diablo 2.
So if you've played Diablo 2, you'll know how epic it is.
I think Brutal Legend is just as epic as that. (Even if their two different genres)

I played a Baron rusher on Pleasure Gardens the other day and I kicked his ass with Bride double team on his first rush.

Meantime I was upgrading my stage and I maxed out my Brood production, since he was only producing Barons.

Finally I maxed out my stage, had 3 Brides, 2 Organists, a Treeback and other miscellaneous units with a ton of Broods. I kicked the shit out of the most recent rush he did and sent my army towards his stage after halting his production.

My entire army was 1/4 of the way to his stage when he began production again. Naturally he was producing Barons and I noticed once my units were halfway there that he had already built up a sizable group of Barons again. He sent them screaming towards my stage without intercepting my units. I sent my army back to my own stage to defend but it was too late. I tried using my stage and the lights to kill as many as I could but my units were too slow and he won.

Moral of the story: there is really not a lot DD can do against a Baron spammer on Pleasure Gardens.

EDIT: I even left some broods at the stage for mamakaze purposes. Not good enough.

The only thing I can really think of is to wait for a wave, kill it, and then use Encompassing Gloom really quick.

Then, rush to his stage and kill his base fan geyser, while marching half your army over, but leaving a good number of anti-Baron stuff.

Seriously though, I can't wait for the patch.

I basically was trying this. I left less than half of my army at the base, but I assumed since he had every geyser except his base geyser that he would not be able to produce so many so quickly. He had another army before I was even halfway there.

If you're playing as DD you have to know when you've committed to an attack. You have to remember though, if you have a dirg, then those bases fall insanely fast. You probably shouldn't have turned your army around. Instead, let them go straight for the base, and then land in your front yard and cast rain of tears at a good time.

Yeah, I just wish I didn't have to do something so advanced and precise when all he has to do is click click click you die now

Actually, the way he's playing you may have wanted to just take Treeback and the Dirigible alone. I mean, he's not exactly going to be defending. Still, it is ridiculous that it should even be a consideration that once you control the entire map you may still be instantly destroyed if you move away from your base.

Edit: haha, I think I said the exact same thing like a month ago. That's really the reason stuff like this gets annoying.

So you have 40 seconds to prevent a baron rush?

    Bring it on.

More importantly (tragically), you know when Call of the Wild is probably getting cast. But what I don't get is when you get Razor Elk or Ground Urchins

I don't know the exact numbers but it's something like

    Stage 2 - 25% ground urchins - 75% Raptors
    Stage 3 - 25% Raptors - 75% Tollusks
    Stage 4 - 25% Tollusks - 75% Hextadon

I'll add that to the guide. Also, It's a total of 1 minute, 10 seconds to have Tier 2 ready and cast Call of the Wild. I think I'll keep the stopwatch ready on my wrist when playing Ironheade.

I tried using my stage and the lights to kill as many as I could but my units were too slow and he won.

in regards with dealing with Ironheade baron rush, you have options when your drowning doom.

drowning doom's tree back is generally not even needed. all you really need is 3 brides, 2 organist, a dirgible, and a shit load of broods, and you win. double team with the brides (level 2 of coarse) and tear through the stage in about 15 seconds. if your really paranoid, you can drop the black ink meteors solo on the stage too, but in most cases, the stag is gonna go down before the song attack finishes.

joshofalltrades, you lost that match because 1) you didn't have a dirgible, and 2) you wasted your time trying to defend your base with an army across the map. you could have delayed the baron production by playing the skull song to stop unit production as well.

the baron rush is a fail tactic, really easy to counter if you you keep your cool.

    ROFL!
    Don't tell them that! o_O
They don't need to know that you owned me terribly in the Pleasure Gardens in eight minutes!
    Wait...
    DAMNIT!
Yeah I really goofed up and that's never a good thing when facing someone like you. :?
I only dropped on the board like nine spots so I forgive you. :P
Plus I happened to have like two dozen battles in less than three hours today, so i'm slowly getting back to where I was....atleast i'm not in the 200s anyway.
I was trying to split up my troops with one nun and one band of soul kissers down each way, but one nun and the two soul kissers went one way and the other nun acted like a idiot and ran off on her own for you to kick her ass. Then I think you did the same thing and split your guys up because before I knew it you had most of the geysers. So yeah, I was pretty boned since you slaughtered what I had left. :?
Then when I attempted to reclaim a geyser with my guys you went apeshit on me with roadies. Lol.
