So I'm building a new mini PC in a cube case, and I would like it if my nice 285GTX was as close to the side of the case as possible to get that fresh air it so sorely needs. I'm just wondering, when a motherboard has a few graphics card slots, can I stick it in any of 'em and it'll work as the primary display? If I can, will I see any performance reduction 'cause its farther away from the CPU? Will I get a cooler card if its closer to the side (with appropriate vents)? Do mobile phones cause cancer?
Quick Google doesn't turn up anything regarding PCIe slot priority. Give it a try and see if it works, I suppose.
EDIT: That is to say I don't think you'll see any kind of performance degradation if you're in slot 0 or slot 1. Windows will use whatever it has available as a primary display.
Any performance issues would be negligible, however, some motherboards are picky, and won't let you use Slot 1 if Slot 0 isn't populated. You'll have to try that out.
The lower slot does allow some nicer airflow, since you don't have everthing cramped up. It would be best if you ran some tests and see how it does.
