AudioSurf: Tilt [Zune HD]

tiltsquare.jpg

A bunch of new apps dropped for the Zune HD today (all free) Among them was AudioSurf: Tilt. A game that is deserving of it's own thread.

tiltblurb.jpg

So I am thinking we can use this thread to discuss the game and what songs we are playing in it. What songs make for a good challenge? What songs are incredibly awesome? What songs create awful tracks? We can even share high scores, and such. Those with ZunePasses have a great opportunity here, since they can all download whatever songs other people talk about, for the most part.

To start, I want to share what, I think, is a great track to start off with, since it's short, and space travel themed. So, here is the Astronaut Jones Jingle, which you can download, toss on your Zune, and play. (I downloaded this file from Tracy Morgan's webpage a few years back. It is no longer downloadable, but there is still a version of it embedded on the page, free to listen to, and as far as I know, he has NEVER charged for this file. If the mods have an issue with my sharing it here, please either edit it out, or PM me and I will edit it out myself.)

Huh. I'd have expected it to hit the iPod / iPhone first. It's not a major deal or anything, but it's still one thing that gives an edge for the Zune.

I expect it to sell many many copies, given the right marketing.

I'm making an assumption here, because I don't have a ZunePass myself.

If it doesn't work with the ZunePass, that would actually be a HUGE strike against it, IMO.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Like every other app currently available for the Zune HD, it is completely free, so I think the number of copies that it "sells" is really just limited to the number people with Zune HDs.

Has an iPhone port been announced yet? I know that Tilt was announced for the Zune back in September (if not earlier) but I don't remember any talk of an iPhone version back then (not that I was looking heavily.)

No official talk of an iPhone port. There was one twitter that the creator might be interested in doing an iPhone port, but that's all that's ever been heard IIRC.

Wow, this game is amazing. I've never even heard of it before. Like Guitar Hero mixed with Wipeout.

Naturally the very first song I fired up for it was Stan Bush's "The Touch." I can't really say if it made for a good course, but this was one of those moments where technology fulfilled a dream I never even realized I've always had.

It's a lot simpler than Audiosurf, but it's awesome for on-the-go Audiosurf.

The song selection menu could use some work, since the scrolling is opposite to how you scroll on any other list in any menu [only if you move your thumb too far to the right/left]. Also taking the jump to letter feature from the Music list would be phenomenal.

I have the Zune Pass and it works fine with leased songs.

I have to admit, I've never really gotten into this game. It seems like a very dumbed down racer that's associated with songs you play on it. If that makes your brain tingle, more power to you, but it doesn't appeal to me. It's possible this version is a lot simpler than the original, but I have a hard time imagining it's that much different.

That said, the graphics on this really show the potential of the Zune HD. It seems like you could do a lot with this. I may have to finally get around to some serious programming with XNA.

You can actually scroll either way (you can pull the song list up or down, or you can pull the scroll bar up or down which makes the list go the oposite way. just be aware of whether you are touchign the scroll bar or not.

I agree on the jump to letter thing. Hopefully even thought these games are free, they will se updates.

I look around and couldn't find any.

Suggest a method to make them myself and I'm all ears.

I don't have any sort of set-up that lets me output my Zune to a PC and capture the screen image.

So wow, Audio surf is actually fleshed out really nicely. I mean there is a pretty impressive amount of attention to detail here and some songs make for some great fun. Daft Punk seems to be making the best levels though. :D

As of right now, nope, it doesn't. Sadly.

It would be awesome if they added support for Zune DRM to it, though. I've been hoping for that to happen ever since the original announcement that Audiosurf would be coming to the Zune HD.

Should we post songs that work really fucking well? I think most of us have the Zune Pass so getting the songs wouldn't be a bad idea. What we can do is create a playlist and just post it so fellow zune passers can just download the songs, and create their own playlist because god damn, some songs are just fucking epic. Time Bomb from DMB is just incredible for example.

Being a synesthete makes this game harder but presumably more awesome. Tunnels with lots of stripes are vertigo inducing.

That's your problem. It's not a racer per se, as in it's not your objective to reach the finishing line, your actual objective is to rack up points and you do it by strategically collecting certain blocks that, in turn, will help you get incredible amounts of points.

It's more of a puzzle game than a racer.

Well, I don't have a Zune, but I've played Audiosurf. So I'm going to recommend to anyone reading this thread to go ahead and download The Mars Volta - Roulette Dares (The Haunt of) (from the De-Loused in the Comatorium album). I played a lot of that game, and that level is a great blend.

Obviously better if you're a major fan, but lemme know what you think.

I just think of it as a way to interact with your music while listening to it. Sometimes I'll just put it on free ride and watch it like a regular visualization, other times I'll put it on pro and work my ass off to beat whatever the current high score is.

Visually, both this and Planet Gotham Racing are visually really impressive. I can't believe MS is still playing down the app/gaming potential of the device. This thing really has a lot of potential. The bowling game is fun, too and seems to have a ton of unlockables.

    Obligatory 65daysofstatic plug.

Seriously. Anything by them makes Audiosurf absolute heaven.

    particularly intense tracks:

I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood
Drove Through Ghosts to Get Here
    Retreat! Retreat!
    Fix The Sky A Little
    Aren't We All Running?
    Radio Protector

and if you can track down their album Unreleased/Unreleasable 2: How I Fucked Off All My Friends, the last track, Massive Star at the End of its Burning Cycle, it is one of the most intense songs I've ever heard.

or, you know, anything by them.

I hear you. I got my ZuneHD by winning it in a raffle, and immediately thought of ebaying it since I'm a Mac dude. But I liked what I saw of the Zune and ended up keeping it, so I drag out a six-year-old laptop that takes 15 minutes to turn on and 15 seconds to register a keyboard stroke whenever I want to sync. I would LOVE if Zunes got Mac support.

Also, "Poker Face" makes an awesome track, particularly when the chorus kicks in. OH SHUTUP I know I'm not the only one who tried it.

No, it was a party for fans of dealnews.com. Which I realize sounds kind of weird, and I almost didn't go, but I was pretty happy I went after I won the Zune. And this was right after my girlfriend won an iPod Nano and we both had already won free T-shirts. There uh, weren't very many people participating in the raffle.

    Haha nice.

In my case it was a raffle done on my university campus as part of a free Windows 7 giveaway promotion sponsored by Microsoft. The grand prize was the Zune, and I never thought in a million years that I'd win it since I've never won anything ever, and there were actually a ton of people there.

I did consider ebaying it, but after some thought I did decide I could use a new mp3 player, and it does just seem pretty slick.
