Unlike EA, where they let you redownload the game for only 6 months, after that you were shit out of luck. Unless you paid $5 extra for them to let you redownload the game for 2 years! Nice!
Actually I think it's a flat 1 year now. They used to allow you to pay for the privilege of a 2 year download, but they scrapped that scheme.

I've got the exact quote they used to use, it's hilarious:
What is the Extended Download Service?
Think of this as your digital safety net for those unexpected occurrences - like your hard drive frying or a virus infection. EDS means that with the purchase of your digital product, we'll keep a copy of your file for two full years, so you don't have to. You'll gain peace of mind knowing that we have your program stored and ready for you to download again at your convenience.
A little extra protection on your order to keep your products safe? Why not!

How thoughtful of them, they'll keep a copy of those bits that they need to have copies of anyway!
Grief, I bet the higher ups at EA still wonder why the EA store never took off.
Okay, my friend is still getting the "servers are too busy" error when trying to preload L4D2.
His steam is fully updated, he's tried restarting steam, restarting his computer, deleting clientregistry.blob, and using a web browser link (steam://preload/550) and nothing's worked.
*feels like a mindless zombie paying Valve for L4D2.
They better not release L4D3 in 2010 November.
If this one holds up as well as the last one for me, I'll be begging them for a sequel by next November.

In continuing my late-to-the-party theme with Left 4 Dead, I just discovered the Hunter Training maps that someone made. I've only played them a little bit so far, but damn, I am really glad that sort of thing exists.

Shit yeah.
Quality product is quality product. Churn it out Valve.
I'm all for more Left 4 Dead.
I'd pay for individual campaigns via DLC if they wanted. The modular design of L4Ds gameplay should, you would think, lend itself greatly to continuous content delivery.
Also, since it got missed last thread. Can I get an invite to armadeadon (Link in sig)? The chat right before the game launches promises to be hilarious.
So my wife and I have this bought already. I've preloaded it, she has not. Is there a way I can just copy the files over or burn like a retail style disc so I can install it on her comp without re-downloading the ~7GB game again?
I tried the backup utility, and selected to make a DVD, but it didn't do shit. Made a 614kb folder, which didn't seem right. What am I missing here?

If you're talking about L4D2, instead of L4D (which is I believe what Soal is talking about) I'm pretty sure you will need to have it unlock and decrypted before you can use the backup feature.

Go to Steam > Steamapps > Common. Copy the Left 4 Dead 2 folder.
Put that copy in the respective place on your wife's computer. Restart Steam. Hopefully it should verify the game files that are there and download whatever else is necessary (bear in mind that Left 4 Dead 2 shares some common source files, so if those aren't present on her computer she might need to re-download those). If not, double click Left 4 Dead 2 in the games list and it should start pre-loading, but make use of the files there. It'll say it's starting at 0%, but if it's recognised the game files being present then it'll be going much faster than if it was downloading everything from scratch.
A Slight Clarification...
November 13, 2009 - L4D Team
Due to an ongoing debate in the office and online as to whether "12 AM" means noon or midnight (we're still sticking with midnight), it's been more challenging than we realized to tell people when exactly our game will be available. Factor in the Earth rotating around the sun, daylight savings time, some of our fans insisting on using the Mayan calendar, and we're just going to try and make this as specific as possible:
When L4D2 will go live:
* Monday, November 16th, 9:00 PM Pacific Standard Time
* Monday, November 16th, 10:00 PM Mountain Standard Time
* Monday, November 16th, 11:00 PM Central Standard Time
* Tuesday, November 17th, 12:00 AM (midnight) Eastern Standard Time
* Tuesday, November 17th, 5:00 AM Greenwich Mean Time
* Tuesday, November 17th, 8:00 AM Moscow Time
* Tuesday, November 17th, 2:00 PM Japan Standard Time

How do you do that?
EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't realize there was an option in the settings.
ANd that didn't seem to help.
Tried something ridiculous yet? Otherwise maybe an internet problem, tried resetting router etc. ?
Worse comes to worse, you can make a steam backup when it releases and install it on his computer using that.
Or the shortest.

Some of the episodes of it are good, but yeah, this one was pretty bad.
