I remember really enjoying FFIX when I played it the first time. It felt like a love letter to people who remembered as far back as the first FF title, which was one of my first videogames.
On replaying it though, the slow combat just fucking killed me and I couldn't make it very far. It didn't help that my the opening 10 hours or so are way better than the rest of the game.
My previous comment is not hyperbole, by the way, not in the least.
There are FFs I don't particularly dig (V, XII), but IX is the only one I can honestly look at and think "Wow...now that's a horrible fucking game." The only redeeming feature I can think of in the game is the weapon-based Ability system, which isn't even unique to IX so there's really no reason whatsoever to play it.
Look, I don't care how badly you people might think of FFIX for whatsoever reason, but FFVIII's game mechanics and balance system is fundamentally broken. It is, on any level approaching objectivity, a worse designed game than FFIX.

The thread title is fucking amazing and I agree with every word.
I totally disagree with FFIX being less fun than VIII. The brokenness killed my interest in that game faster than anything else. It's kind of like making everyone in the same in VII, X, or XII. You have diversity in IX, and each character has a set role. That's good gameplay mechanics.
FFVIII's first disc was at least genuinely interesting until the story took a complete nosedive. FFIX began bland and never made any ascension. This is why VIII ranks higher in my opinion, despite my utter contempt for the junction system.
Both still manage to end stronger than VII. The very last bit of disc 2 and all of disc 3 blow, where the final dungeon in FF VIII is actually amazing and the last disc and a half of FF IX really shine.
I hear Tales of Vesperia is good, but the demo was horrible.
Then I'm told that the demo is horrible but the real game is good! But I've been fooled by that same line once before (the terrible Eternal Sonata), so you'll understand if I'm wary.
I was enthralled by IX the moment I lit the candle on the Tantalus ship. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Do lightswitches fascinate you?
No, but I knew at that moment I was in for a totally different experience. I mean, right after that a guy in a fucking dragon mask attacks you. That's kind of awesome.
Just because you are a cold-hearted individual made of stone, doesn't mean I can't enjoy IX through and through. It only lags, for me, in Fossil Roo.
And he's the only FF villain who never actually gets defeated by the party. When you fight him for the final time it's bascally 'Oh, what, my time's up? Right, ULTIMA."
We'd be all World of What the hell craft right now and all up ins FF XI if they had only included Triple Triad instead of Tetra Master.
Fuck, I know I would be.
Actually, if I remember right, your Tetra Master subscription was separate from the main FFXI subscription. I would still totally be signed up were it Triple Triad.

I fucking love that title.
You can all go back to discussing Dissidia/complaining about belts/having wrong opinions about FFIX now, like UnbreakableVow you heathen.
I would rather contract herpes than play FFIX again.

Same. I much prefer playing VII and VIII because IX's combat is just too fucking slow.
Triple Triad powns all.

Though I guess it's a good way to keep everyone from playing the good card game constantly.
And yet it's simply more fun.
Broken does not equal not fun.

he has a terrible case of hyperbolitis
Active Time Event.
Granted, I didn't care about any of the characters or story in IX, but that was a really cool mechanic that I'd like to see revisited someday.
Go play a Tales game.
Only attack every ten seconds, it'll feel turn based enough.
Then I'm told that the demo is horrible but the real game is good! But I've been fooled by that same line once before (the terrible Eternal Sonata), so you'll understand if I'm wary.

I'd say Dark Messenger is better, but FF9's Final Battle is damn good.

Ah Tripple Triad, the fun path to the Disc One Nuke.
// Switch: SW-5306-0651-6424 //
Nah.
In fact, seeing as a villain is supposed to be at least somewhat fearful, I'd say that is a giant fucking failure.
Resemblances to Doc Brown make him acceptable.
Turn in your gamer card, you lily-livered miscreant.
