You know. Switching your characters dress sphere. I swear, may as well have called it Barbie Fantasy X-2: For Chicks and Gays.
So you hate an on-the-fly Job System? by the way, nice gay stereotyping there, broski.
Hey, dude. Maybe when they man these games up a bit, me and my bros will enjoy playing them. I mean, dude...you play as chicks for the majority of the game, and they spend most of it doing Sailor Moon shit, the hell? So until then I'll just stick to kicking the asses of lames who like this stuff.
Playing as female characters isn't really an issue. Playing as Summoner-turned-Japanese Pop Star isn't really interesting to me. I don't care for J-Pop. I don't think that automatically places me in the beer-swilling, high fiving frat boy set.

How dare you play as women who do women things and be feminine? "Manning" things up? Just how heteronormative of a world do you immerse yourself in? You're stuck in some weird gender binary quagmire.
Guess what, guys can be feminine and not be gay! Guys can play FFX-2 and be straight!

...I'm not talking to you.
Seems like you are to me.
I stopped playing soon after I figured out that the quest system reminded me of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, which took maybe three missions.
For me the big problem with X-2 was what felt like the raping of the entire world of Spira.
I mean... it's like if they made a sequel to Pan's Labyrinth where they've turned Captain Vidal's estate into a carnival. With Mercedes as a J-Pop singer on center stage in a fruity costume screaming GIRL POWER!
Well. I'll have to disagree. This was Spira after Sin. People no longer had all the doom and gloom of knowing their world might end at any time hanging over their backs. May as well start enjoying themselves.
Except that our world doesn't have the doom and gloom of Sin hanging over it at all times. Granted, we never did, but our world also didn't get that ridiculous right after the Cold War, or WW2, or any number of huge, horrible events and this seems like several years after the fact. It just felt off and very wrong to me, and so silly that I didn't find it compelling.

Well, I mean that is kind of different when you think about.
WW2 was horrible, but it all happened in a pretty short period of time and it did a lot of damage.
Sin was different. It was for the most part, controlled. Sure you had stuff like Kilika village, but for the most part you got a few summoners, they sacrifaced themselves and everything was good.
Yet, you still have that lingering threat over your heads. The threat that was Sin. I would think the first thing people would do after something was finally gotten rid of would be to release one big sigh of relief now that they know it is gone for good.

The difference between Sin and WWII would be that with Sin they not only lost their recurring enemy, they also lost the restrictive, stupid religion they had before that. Taking religion away from a society tends to make people do a total 180 and go nuts with freedom.

Guys can be effeminate and not gay, and play FF X-2 and be straight.
They can also not care for the game for the female focus and dress-up aspects and not be close-minded misogynisitc homophobes. Jumping to one conclusion is just as bad as jumping to another.
The important thing to remember about my post is that it's an opinion. I phrased it the way I did on purpose: I found the world so silly that I didn't personally find it compelling.
I liked the battle system in FFX-2, I just couldn't get into the mission style gameplay. I kept feeling like I was missing something. I eventually bought the guide when I was 3/4 the way through the game and sure enough I missed quite a lot.
That's when I stopped playing. I hate that feeling.
Oh, and it's been a while since I've played it, but during the opening J-Pop song, it sounded like she was singing, "What can I do for you?", and the only thing I could think of was, "You can shut the fuck up!"

...She does say that...>_>...hehe. I mean come on, J-pop aside, there is a lot more to the game than that.
Also, Sphere Break was the best non-card based minigame to be introduced to FF. Other than Chocobo Hot n' Cold.

If the religion is particularly restrictive yes... for example, I've known a few gay men who were forced into rigid Christian lifestyles, and once they were able to leave their parents home they cut off their religious ties and became much more wholesome people who actually enjoyed life.
Zephyr I think what you're not quite getting is that the statement "take away religion from a society and they tend to do a 180 and go nuts with freedom" is going to come across as a little dubious because
Well, no, we really don't have a whole lot of (any?) instances of that happening in the real world.

We don't have it on a wider scale, but individually this happens all the fucking time
it does seem a bit crazy in Spira, I agree, but I don't see it as totally detached from the realm of possibility

As for myself, I don't think religion is bad, persay, unless people misuse it. I've seen religion do a lot of positive things for people, even if I don't believe in it myself.
Yet, I think I'll stop here, because this is a can of worms I don't want to start discussing.

I mean, I get where the theory that this will happen comes from.
It's just... really? The world gets fucking ridiculous and stays that way for years after the religion has been (sort of) removed?

it's japanese
so... yeah
Here's a good example, using Japan: They had a huge movement of sexual repression in the '70s. As soon as the government took that away, hentai and yaoi and all that stuff was born. That's why their porn is so weird today.
Theoretically, people shouldn't have become that crazy so fast, but it happened.

Becoming more wholesome isn't really going nuts with freedom. And thats an example of a person, not a whole society. But this is off topic and better suited for D&D (where it would get even more off topic).
EDIT: I liked FF:X never played X-2.

Gameeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Game implies fun, which this is sorely lacking.
And now we've gone full circle.
And yet, FFX-2 is ridiculously fun. That battle system is so amazing.

China, Russia, North Korea. (examples of no religion, and the 180 with freedom going in the opposite direction).

Pop concerts on top of 747s in the desert everyday

Or better yet Lady GaGa singing 'Beautiful Dirty Rich' on top of a 747 in the desert

1) Cans of worms are opened, not discussed
2) It should be "Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame", how are you pronouncing the "e" at all, much less in such a prolonged fashion?
3) Japanese porn is "weird" in that it's absolutely censored to shit.
What were these, anyways, and how were they supposed to work with the game?

So I can vote to skip to XIII.
I'm actually curious about this too, I have a working PS2 now and wouldn't mind owning all of the good Playstation Final Fantasies.
Stop being so agreeable
