"I think the business of Rare has changed a great deal, and at the moment there is just not the opportunity to create the soundtracks that Rare were fortunately very famous for."
This is from David Wise, a composer for Rare. It seems to confirm that Rare is now going to be producing mostly Natal casual games.

Sorry guys. I didn't even know it was a racial term. Dictionary.com says it's just a term that means to defraud or rob by sharp practice; swindle; cheat.

I feel ripped off paying $10 more than I feel is necessary for the PC version.

    Ensemble Studios - DEAD

    Digital Anvil - DEAD

    Hired Gun - DEAD

    FASA Studio - DEAD

    Indie Built - DEAD

    Carbonated Games - DEAD

    Wingnut Interactive - Basically DEAD

Mistwalker - Give It Another Year

Bungie - Running Away As Fast As They Can

Rare - Not Looking Too Good

Lionhead Studios - Fate Worse Than Death: Stuck With Molyneux

Xbox Live Productions - As Doomed as Carbonated Games

    Turn 10 - It's Inevitable, Isn't It?

All things considering it's no real surprise and the way RARE has lacked success since their N64 days it seems Nintendo really did do the right choice.

I think all that could have been avoided if Perfect Dark Zero had been totally rockin' instead of a shitfest.

Also, Carbonated Games is dead? They made Uno, probably my most played XBLA game of all time.

I'm thinking MS is gonna start doing the EA partners thing and start acquiring 3rd parties for Texa$

One thing you can say about MS buying Rare is they support the shit out of Rare. 3rd parties see that and are more likely to work with them

On the one hand, I hate to see Rare pidgeonholed as a developer of small games and system stuff.

On the other, it's not as if any of their games in the Microsoft era have been unqualified successes. Sadly enough, this may be the role that best suits them in this type of environment.

And yeah, count me in as another person baffled as to Microsoft's decision to whittle away their first party capabilities to practically nil. They're going to have to be VERY savvy with their moneyhats going forward.

Anyone know what happened to NST? After Project HAMMER died they just seemed to disappear, but they still exist as a company, don't they? Are they stuck to a Rare-like fate within Nintendo?

NST is just like the Nintendo Japan R&D companies, except they are based at NoA. They mostly do in house software/middleware, but sometimes put out games.

Much like what happened to Rare. Rare is just going to be absorbed as an in-house 'research and development' like Nintendo R&D (HAL, etc). They're worth more that way since:

    * Microsoft already has a franchise first person shooter in Halo, making Perfect Dark redundant.
    * Microsoft also banks on 3rd party first person shooters like MW2, making Perfect Dark redundant again.
    * Rare can't sell their "everyone" games like Banjo on the 360 because the userbase isn't there. They're all on Wii and PS2 and DS. If Microsoft wanted to make money off Rare games, they'd release them for Wii.
    * Rare has historically had programmers and guys that could make Nintendo hardware their bitch. Part of this was because working for Rare was basically working for Nintendo, so it was easy for them to recruit. They still have guys that can do amazing things with the 360 hardware, however they would have a harder time recruiting a lot of them, making more sense to have them be the R&D department (which = less people but you can pay them more to keep them)

    Word on the street:
While not going into exact specifics at the BMO Capital Markets Digital Entertainment Conference in New York, Activision's Dennis Durkin, Chief Operating Officer of Interactive Entertainment Business, told those in attendance that the total sales of Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 have been double that of the PlayStation 3 version.

"Initial feedback from retailers is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 [on Xbox 360] has outsold the PS3 2:1," to put it in his exact words.

He added that on Tuesday, the day of launch for the title, the Xbox LIVE service saw its busiest day ever with over two million users online simultaneously.

It's just an estimate from an Actiblizz COO, but it definitely indicates the obvious sales lean of MW2.

Wasn't there some study about how a good number of people were going to switching systems to get certain sequels? Like people buying AC2 on the PS3 after playing AC1 on the Xbox.

I know some people who would have bought it on PS3 but did not because they wanted to have the option of chatting with other people not playing the same game. We tried to get a voice chat going on the XMB but it didn't seem to want to work, and I can't figure out if that's an error or just not featured yet.

Makes sense, the 360 is a lot more shooter and online orientated than the PS3 (despite some decent attempts on Sony's part). From memory, the margin was even wider for CoD4.

I'm guessing Assassin's Creed 2 will be a lot closer, though I doubt its total sales will be as high as its predecessor.

    It wasn't.
    niggard
1366, nygart, of uncertain origin. The suffix suggests Fr. origin (cf. dastard), but the root word is probably related to O.N. hnøggr "stingy," from P.Gmc. *khnauwjaz (cf. Swed. njugg "close, careful," Ger. genau "precise, exact"), and to O.E. hneaw "stingy, niggardly," which did not survive in M.E.

"It was while giving a speech in Washington, to a very international audience, about the British theft of the Elgin marbles from the Parthenon. I described the attitude of the current British authorities as 'niggardly.' Nobody said anything, but I privately resolved—having felt the word hanging in the air a bit—to say 'parsimonious' from then on." [Christopher Hitchens, "The Pernicious Effects of Banning Words," Slate.com, Dec. 4, 2006]
