Stuff like this that covers the entire nation of Australia is a result of legislation passed both by the Commonwealth and the individual states (since there is no inherent power in the Constitution here for the national government to create a ratings body). Likely somewhere in that legislation is a provision that any changes to the ratings scheme or structure requires unanimous approval by all relevant ministers (in this case Attorney Generals).

Edit: As for why Atkinson isn't thrown out...well, not likely as long as his party controls South Australia's government, or he retires. Otherwise this isn't really a big enough issue to kick him out.

People are always going to try and add titties to things. The only thing notable about The Guy Game was that someone sued because I think she was underage.

So let me guess, are those guys in office until they quit or die? Guess you've got a few years to wait.

Doesn't Atkinson have the support of the old folks and the catholics or whoever the biggest loudest bunch of theist fuckwads down there is? They got him in and I can only imagine they're going to bitch up a storm if folks try to get him out.

They're elected like anybody else, but they are also ministers in their state governments and incredibly unlikely to get replaced unless other issues shake them out.

The easiest way to fix Australia's problem is to create a 17/rated R/M/whatever it's called there. The only excuse that Atkinson dude has given for banning most violent games is that there isn't a rating for people who are not minors. Yet he doesn't want to make a rating for adults because he claims that it won't work.

Games are still stuck in that youth ghetto over there, where they think that the only people who want to play games would be children. Ergo, you can't make a game with violence because kids will see it.

    edit: Damn, beat'd.

Atkinson isn't banning them, the classification board is banning them. Atkinson is not allowing an R18+ rating to be introduced, because he thinks that it's not enforceable and will let more violent/sexually explicit games get into the hands of minors (ie the register jockeys at EB won't ask for ID when you buy an R18+ game). He has a point there - they're supposed to ask for ID for an MA15+ game and they don't.

He even refuses to let it be released for public consideration. Basically, he's saying he knows best for Australia, and we have to take it. It's not likely he'll get voted out. He's an old, church going family man. In a state full of them.

Eh, I'm an American living here, and I wouldn't go that far. I can't really describe it that well since I've only lived here about a year, but I will say that mostly the more extreme stuff doesn't get as much traction. More importantly, I can watch movies unedited on TV after 9 PM (although Channel 7 also edits some stuff out of The Simpsons when it airs in the late afternoon).

If they mean in the actual political process, I may agree with that. The governments take their version of federalism pretty seriously, since the constitution here is pretty exhaustive about what the national government can and cannot do (not as much leeway for openly interpreting stuff like the Supreme Court in the US has done since, well, forever). But in the end it's a different system.

Most Aussies probably wouldn't be happy to hear it, but it's pretty much like the US and the UK had a bastard child. It's kind of in the middle of the two other major English-speaking powers in many ways.

It didn't make a huge splash but I wouldn't call it a flop either. The two numbers I could find for it were March 2008 (35k sold) and April 2008 (43k sold). March 2008 it was #10 in the UK, though the number included both the Wii and 360 versions.

So it's a flop when compared to GTA games, but the port can't have cost them very much.

In a perfect world Wii would have gotten more port ups the quality of Bully or RE4 or Godfather. I'd love a version of Killer Seven with pointer controls, considering the controls are the main thing holding it back.

Also more RPGs with simple one handed controls.

Unless you download the $5 Midnight Show, however, that switch is inactive. But don’t worry: A free code to redeem the DLC is included with each copy of The Saboteur.

Huh. It's rare that a game has a soundtrack released in the U.S., much less nearly six months after the game comes out. Still, yay for timely price drops.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is trying to turn Games for Windows into Steam.
Up till now, Games for Windows was simply a platform that enabled Xbox Live-like mechanics on PC titles. However, it appears that Microsoft is looking to expand the limited service with the addition of downloadable Live-enabled games. Earlier today, Microsoft announced Games on Demand will launch on December 15. This will be a new feature within Games for Windows that will allow players to purchase and download Games for Windows enabled titles from your computer. Initially, the feature will host popular Games for Windows titles like Resident Evil 5, Red Faction: Guerilla and Battlestations: Pacific, along with digitial titles like Osmos and World of Goo.

According to Chuck Osieja, creative director of Games for Windows, "Connected digital experiences are defining the continued growth of Windows as a gaming platform. Today marks Microsoft's return to delivering Windows games built on unique Live experiences." Mike Ybarra, general manager of Live Engagement Services concurred, stating, "With Games on Demand, we didn't just want to create a cut-and-paste version of existing digital distribution services. We challenged ourselves to deliver an integrated platform that takes full advantage of the unique capabilities offered by the Live service. Our goal has always been to create a seamless online gaming experience for the Windows community, and Games on Demand is a great step toward that end."

    http://pc.ign.com/articles/105/1051647p1.html

Really, this is how Microsoft should have sold the service to begin with, though coming out now after Steam has become the default place for downloadable PC games? And isn't World of Goo already on Steam?

I know Steam is a default place to go for lots of people around here, but it's not that set in stone. I still see Steam as an unnecessary front end that I don't want to bother with. Games for Windows has as much chance as Steam does to get my attention, though neither is really appealing.

Saboteur, which will be released Dec. 8 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, features mild nudity: The girls of the Belle de Nuit, a Parisian strip club that serves as your home base, will walk around without their tops if you flip the “Nudity” switch in the game’s menu.

Unless you download the $5 Midnight Show, however, that switch is inactive. But don’t worry: A free code to redeem the DLC is included with each copy of The Saboteur.

After you’re done breathing that sigh of relief, you may ask: Why lock this feature behind downloadable content if it comes free with every copy of the game? Simple: Breasts are only for people who buy the game new.

    ahahahahahaha

Since I wasn't in the original discussion. Really EA, WTF? You're going to charge everyone doesn't buy the game new 5 dollars for a different skin? To a generation of gamers who can get free porn whenever they want?

How is that an enticement to buy a game new? At least put in some kind of super tank or something.

Ahh, but put in a super tank and all the 15 year olds will say 'It's so unfair that the super tank is DLC, we're being ripped off! How dare you make me spend $5 on my 'Borrowed' game. "

Make it nudity though, and they have to try and make it seem reasonable to say "I wants my digital bazongas!" It's the same incentive as the super tank, but one you can't complain about not getting.

"In any non-GTA year, should we just assume you're not going to make money?" an investment analyst asked Take-Two CEO Ben Feder and chairman Strauss Zelnick during an investor call today.

The fact that someone actually asked this is glorious. Reminds me of that "gaming journalists discover their testicles" comic.

Austrailia. Wow. Here I thought it was just the U.S. that freaked out at any hint of sex.

I just think they deserve some respect for not whoring GTA out to the max like a certain someone.

Yes because GTAIII, two expansions, GTIV and three expansions, two PSP versions...which were then ported to the PS2, a Game Boy Advance GTA, and a DS/PSP game is definitely now whored out...at all.

All of this since 2001. :?

There is a huge difference between GTA3 with two expansions and GTA4 with three DLC episodes. As far as the hand helds it sure is better than just porting over crappier versions of the home consoles.

I think the point is that they aren't going to treat GTA like Call of Duty/Hero/Activision title X.

Oh yea, I'd never put them in the same league as some of the 'other' franchises that release games on an annual basis or in some cases 10 games a year.

But I wouldn't quite declare them as not using that franchise in a similar way, just not as badly.

But then again, I'm not one to care that they keep releasing games in a specific franchise. Heck if there is a franchise I really like or love (ex: Mario, Ratchet & Clank, Zelda, Metroid) then I want them to keep releasing games in said series.

Most of the people who gripe about a certain game being "whored out" usually are the first in line for the next CoD or Guitar Hero.

I like the idea. They're giving something free, but not affecting game play, to encourage people to buy new. For people who don't buy it new, EA might get another $5 that they wouldn't have gotten. This is exactly the type of thing the devs and publishers should be doing - encouragement without gimping. I hope it works out for them.

You or I might not pay anything to see digital titties and we lose nothing. Everyone's happy.

Whoring out a franchise I think amounts up to putting it out as fast as possible on its featured platform. Like EA would do Madden year to year on consoles. Capcom would do Mega Man on handhelds.

When Take-Two is putting out on multiple platforms, I see it as being less whorish and more like an attempt at diversification.

Meh, it's all minutiae. As long as the quality stays high, such as the franchises I mentioned above are, then I don't care if they continue to make games for them.

When a company attempts to keep a series going annually or more like some companies, then quality starts to slip, and that's when it gets bad.

Steam really has nothing to worry about games for windows live right now but direct 2 drive and impulse should be afraid.Microsoft is the kind of company that if they cant get first they will fight for second which they have show with the xbox and the zune.If Microsoft is serious about this in a year or two down the road i wouldn't be surprised at all if they were second. Hell they could combine zune and games for windows live into one software for music and games and get more sales out of that.

That's true. If there was magic involved in that year-to-year releases kept providing better experiences and enjoyment, people wouldn't take issue with the idea. But we all know what that business model is known for. Soooooooooooooooooooooooo yeah.

It's still a funny thing that it was asked, in the end.

Yeah uh did everyone forget Digital Locker, MS's previous games on demand service?

I mean I'd like the idea more, but Microsoft can decide on sticking with a single service like Brett Favre can decide on if he wants to play or not.
