I've been poor the whole game - its starting to annoy me. All of my characters are at least 1-2 tiers of armor and weapon below what is available because I can't afford to buy anything. I never have more than 2-3g, and the only thing I ever buy is weapons and armor when I can afford it - money seems to just be extremely hard to get in this game. It doesn't help that I stopped bringing a rogue with me recently so I have to ignore all the locked chests either, but even before that I was short on money. Alistair is still in heavy armor because I can't afford any massive armor for him yet at level 12.
How many side-quests have you done?
Are you a goody-two shoes that refuses compensation for your time and questing? "No, your thanks is enough.." Don't do that, their thanks is never enough.
Do you explore every inch of every dungeon? Dungeons usually have extremely rewarding side quests. Some of the side rooms have monsters with some nice loot (i.e. a couple of gold from a darkspawn mage).
Especially (Dwarf Kingdom Spoilers)
Free the demon with the body parts collected in the deep roads.
Select "Reward" instead of "Vengeance" at the altar.
Enjoy your 60 gold coins.
Make your own health poultices instead of buying them.
Stay away from the auction house, or you will never have any money...err wrong game.

Do you have Warden's Keep? If so, go do it, there is a suit of massive armor available from the quest line. It requires you to make certain choices, but the choices aren't hard to figure out.
Basically you need to betray and then kill the demon chick who is actually wearing said suit of massive armor. She actually drops it.

This, combined with lock picking, is how I have a small fortune semi-early mid game. I explore everything, my PC has level 4 herbalism and I know where all the infinite mat vendors are, so I make all my own pots, and I do every side quest I see...and yes lady, you're going to pay me. I'm not the Good Will.

Collect 60 gold.
It turned my party's equipment completely around.

Man, the DLC contains some ridiculous loot for the level you can do it at. It makes the game a lot easier
But how much does gold really help you with? The only stuff I've really bought is better armor for Alistair. Besides the ridiculous priced stuff at a few vendors (I'm talking the 100g and up stuff), I've found just as good or better in doing the quests and such. I usually have somewhere between 15 and 25g and I certainly haven't felt that I'm undergeared. I'm currently doing some side quests while working on recruiting the dwarves.

What is the scarf for?
You can also trade him a silver ring you got in the Urn ruins, or the book you got from the hunter in the Dalish camp. Or all three if you want everything he's got (the book he has is worthless as far as I can tell).

There is other stuff you can trade him too. I remember there being a book, scarf, and some dalish work? (I think it was referring to the armor you can get made with the iron bark) to trade him.

Did anyone else see that you can by Wintersbreath from a merchant and the "unique" staff you get from the WK DLC is called Winter's Breath?
As it turns out the DLC staff is worse than it's sold counterpart but actually cost real money to obtain. They are exactly the same except the one from the shopkeeper has an extra +2 to magic.
How did they overlook something like that?
The DLC one isn't worse! It has more Ice DMG on it. For an ice based mage I think it's a bit better.
No it isn't, at least the ones i have are both dragonbone and are identical, except for the +stat.

Yes what is gold useful for apart from buying extra skills, buying extra stats, buying extra secondary skills, getting max rep with your companions as fast as possible, getting some of the best gear in the game, making some quests easier and making sure you always have more than enough consumables?

You're not playing the game right. Answer the question with a question.
Have you looked harder for the ring near the gravestones? Do you think it might be something that he wants instead of a scarf in exchange for the acorn?
So if I didn't drink Avernus's concoction am I screwed without using the console/toolkit? Any negative consequences of drinking it if I go back to that save?

I don't remember trading him anything valuable. He just wanted a silver ring for the acorn and some worthless book I picked up for his book.

No, there are no negative consequences. You should go back and drink it, it's worth it, especially if you're a mage.

Or you can just kill the hermit after trading items other than the scarf - I think the gem you get form saving the scout can be traded to him as well. Don't give him the scarf unless you are playing a total dick though.
Can I get some advice please? I completely screwed the pooch at redcliffe.
I did it with warrior/warrior/mage/rogue (me) and the last night was a nightmare. I killed the boy and left the mage in prison, but where im concerned is my party's composition. It keeps ended up that i have a mage and tank warrior standing at the end of the fight. This means i hosed my self for future fights to come.
Problems Im having:
1. I keep catching my entire party in my mage's cone of cold... even if i change the tactics on its use. Is there a way to fix this?
2. My rogue is still hitting for 10 damage a hit while my warriors are averaging 30-40 and my mage is landing spells in the 50s. My rogue is level 8, at what point do i move to good 1 handed swords?
3. Is there a way to stop my 2 handed warrior (Sten?) from face planting and constantly taking dirt naps constantly... I want top drop him for an eventual 2nd mage/healer if i find one, but he is a monster for party DPS.

You don't need the scarf, but... go touch the tree stump and insert something into the hole. :winky:
So, Wynne and Zevran in the same party is pretty great.
Wynne: Don't you feel any remorse for all the lives you've taken?
Zevran: Oh, yes. I am nearly in tears. Perhaps I could cry into your bosom?
Wynne: You can cry just fine without the aid of my bosom, I'm sure.
Pair up Morrigan and Sten for more hilarity.
morrigan and alistair are the best.
or leleina + dog
So is it better to have contrasting companions? I don't want another BG2 situation where it's funny but then the party member leaves.

Are you using daggers? If so, get the dagger hotfix. The game shipped with a broken dagger script that caused it use strength as it's scale stat, instead of dex and cunning. There is a hotfix mod on the social site to fix it.

Put better armor on him? That's really the only advice I can give.
I have M, Al, and Wynne in a party and 70+ with all of them (M is at 95 or something).
Just... don't bring M along when you're walking through non-combat towns. Then she won't bitch at you for picking up quests or turning them in (unless you're being a dick).

If you pump his strength (or get enough rep with him to get his +str bonus) then you can stick him in blood dragon really early on, with great results (it will give him ridiculous quantities of armour for that stage of the game).
God, fuck this stupid character creator. I can't make a decent looking human to save my life, and when I finally get something passable I realise its the wrong class, so I hit back and when I change to rogue it wipes the whole fucking thing and replaces it with default shithead.

How many specializations do you need though? Are you guys leveling up/equipping everyone? Admittedly, I've been using Shale which is certainly easier to equip than everyone other than Dog. None of the other mage specializations really fit Wynne. I may unlock shapechanger for my mage for the bonuses, but I don't see myself actually using any forms and I'm not even level 14 to invest in it yet. I do need to think about getting a second specialization for Alistair. I'm working on building up rep with my party members, so that may get expensive. I don't even really know what Alistair likes, so I'll have to do a bit of trial and error.
This could just be a product of playing it on normal, but I really haven't felt the need to spend like 12g on a book to give me some stat ups because the times I've died its been about tactics and not stats that did me in. This is all with not having any rogue that than lockpick. So, I was/am genuinely interested in what you guys are spending money on.

For the party warriors, it's really worth shooting their Str into the high 30, low 40 range as quickly as you can, and then filling out the other attributes afterwards.
