Fuck Sheriff Joe: 2012 Presidential Run Edition

About time something happened to this asshole.

First, the Department of Homeland Security has told Arpaio to cut it the fuck out with his random immigrant raids, according to its revision and standardization of its immigration enforcement agreements with state and local police.

Then, in an internal audit of the Sheriff's department, a $465,000 bus has been cited against Arpaio as a violation.

Quoting the second part of the article that's interesting, and then the first since it's funnier that way.
Sheriff's officials have contended they purchased the bus to address the critical need of getting inmates to court on time and used a fund that was not subject to the county's procurement policies and freeze on capital purchases. A letter from Arpaio in response to the audit concedes that sheriff's deputies have had problems getting inmates to court on time and that the bus was a necessity.
The custom-made bus was purchased with the sheriff's jail-enhancement funds, a revenue stream built from fines, penalties and forfeitures, in October 2008 but has sat idle ever since it was delivered in May and become a looming sign of the ongoing disputes between Sheriff Joe Arpaio and county administrators.

Note the bolded parts.

Now, Pat Gilbert is telling Arpaio to pay the fuck up.
Critics of Arpaio and Thomas have been heavily frustrated that no matter what these two might do in their political struggles with other county officials, their actions are generally immune from lawsuits seeking money as punishment - to protect the integrity of their respective offices.

But Gilbert has notified Thomas and Arpaio there's at least one area where they aren't protected, and that's for spending tax dollars inappropriately. Tribune writer Gary Grado reported this week Gilbert has formally asked state Attorney General Terry Goddard to go after anyone, including the sheriff and county attorney, who authorized spending contrary to state and county purchasing rules.

...

As for Arpaio, Gilbert contends someone needs to pay for a $456,221 inmate transport bus that a county audit concluded this week was purchased in violation of the rules.

...

Thomas and Arpaio insist they have acted appropriately and they are being attacked because Stapley, fellow Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox and the entire board are subjects of various criminal inquiries. Grado pointed out that Gilbert has professional and personal ties to Stapley. So Gilbert's threat to sue might not be motivated out of a concern for the county treasury.

I personally hope that Arpaio has to pay for every red cent of that bus out of pocket, and that he has to go to tent city to work off whatever isn't in his bank account. Since that would resemble ironic and suitable justice (an impossibility), I hope that this at least sets him back a couple notches.

I love that he's got the audacity to claim that this is all retribution for ongoing investigations into civilian officials, since you know, he opens those investigations as retribution for not supporting his actions.

Besides which, even if that is their only motivation, he still paid for that bus in an unauthorized way. So, who gives a crap about why they're going after him if they're right that he did something wrong?

My favorite part is how every single civilian official is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the sheriff's department. Even those outside his jurisdiction.

Oh yeah, because having your entire county government involved in criminal investigations doesn't look suspicious at all.

Oh, believe me, I'm the most cynical person in the world when it comes to this. I think he'll be in power until he dies from a powdered sugar overdose, then he'll be given a funeral normally reserved for kings and statesmen, install his highest-ranking deputy to take his place, and have a statue of him erected on top of the capitol building.

I didn't say he wasn't untouchable, just that he's acting like it.

Actually, I'm the one that created the Fuck Sheriff Joe series, because frankly, the man's disgusting.

The thing is that this is actually something that could get traction against Joe. Now, I know you're all thinking "But Hedgie, the man has already caused the county to pay out $40+ million in lawsuits, how is a bus costing half a million any different?" Well, the difference is that the lawsuits can and are painted as a bunch of unscrupulous shysters and greedy families ripping off the county because they want to get rich quick, and they're using poor poor Sheriff Joe as a scapegoat - which means that Joe's able to shift the blame for costing Maricopa County $40+ million. But an inappropriately purchased bus? That's a motor coach of a different color - there's no real external agent that Joe can point to and say "they're the real culprit." That's why his defense has been two pronged - he's claiming that he used a fund not under the spending freeze restriction, as well as saying that the government officials accusing him are under criminal investigation (of course, never mind that if you're an elected official in Maricopa County, you're either owned by Joe or under criminal investigation.)

Especially in this economic climate, profilgate spending is dimly viewed by the public. And in the end, it should only take one opening to pull Joe's house of cards down around him. Hopefully, this is that opening.

The news team for Telemundo 52 recently reported on Alma Minerva Chacon, a women who was terrorized by Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Unfortunately, she is just the latest in a long line of Latinos who have suffered at the hands of the ruthless Sheriff whose personal goal is to rid Arizona of all "illegals" and just maybe, all Latinos. Arpaio has repeatedly stated that he is breaking no laws and just enforcing the constitution by arresting more than 600 Latinos a year. But the problem with his tactics is that less than half of those arrested are even in this country illegally.

The most recent atrocity committed by the self-proclaimed "America's Toughest Sheriff" involves a woman who was detained while 9-months pregnant. Alma Minerva Chacon's case has been receiving media attention due to the brutality with which she was treated. The very same night of her arrest, Chacon went into labor and found herself afraid and alone, being rushed to a local hospital with her hands and legs chained in shackles.

Once she reached the hospital, nurses repeatedly begged the Sheriff's staff to allow them to unchain the mother, but they refused and Chacon was forced to give birth while still shackled to the bed. At one point, the nurse asked for them to release her so that she could be escorted to the bathroom for a urinalysis, but even that request was denied. But the worst came once Chacon gave birth to her baby girl.

Still chained to the bed, Arpaio's police staff refused to allow Chacon to hold her newborn baby and then warned her that if no one came to pick up the child within 72 hours, she would be turned over into state custody.

    :(

Frankly the wrong kind attention in my opinion, as that's exactly what the jury did in the McDonalds hot coffee case, which doomed it to forever be held up as a stirling example of defense lawyers run amok.

Also, take a gander on over to the Maricopa Sheriff's website, as old Joe recently added a new section to it based purely on giving the real "facts" behind all of these rumours and falsehoods against his office. It makes for some pretty hilarious reading.

He's going nowhere until the Phoenix metro area gains enough minority voters to oust the old, rich white voters out of power. But as long as he continues to crusade against illegals (as a convenient cover for chasing brown people out of town), well, I don't see it happening any time soon.

Yep. In fact, I believe that it's still legal in most states.

I'm generally very pro-union, but correction officer unions have way too much power.

Edit: Of course, once you actually get a bill up for a vote, it passes easily, with only jackasses like my assemblyman opposed.

The thing though is that this could spell doom for him, not success. Part of what's kept his ass safe is that he's been relatively small scale in a political sense, and that he controls not just the sheriff's office, but the DA and has the county council more or less cowed as well. Running for governor will expose him to a whole new level of sunlight, and even if he wins, he's not going to have the insulating circle of cronies that he has in Maricopa County.
