Well the man is eloquent to some degree. he can fearmonger I mean talk to retirees about scary brown people but I don't think he'd survive long in a formal debate.

    But she's a m-m-m-maverick

It's been said so many times in these threads now that it's basically a cliche, but after reading the quote about the woman in labor, I still can't believe shit like this actually goes down in the United States of America. Even more incredible is that it gets reported on and nobody lifts a finger.

Fuck you, Joe. You're no American hero.

The news team for Telemundo 52 recently reported on Alma Minerva Chacon, a women who was terrorized by Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Unfortunately, she is just the latest in a long line of Latinos who have suffered at the hands of the ruthless Sheriff whose personal goal is to rid Arizona of all "illegals" and just maybe, all Latinos. Arpaio has repeatedly stated that he is breaking no laws and just enforcing the constitution by arresting more than 600 Latinos a year. But the problem with his tactics is that less than half of those arrested are even in this country illegally.

The most recent atrocity committed by the self-proclaimed "America's Toughest Sheriff" involves a woman who was detained while 9-months pregnant. Alma Minerva Chacon's case has been receiving media attention due to the brutality with which she was treated. The very same night of her arrest, Chacon went into labor and found herself afraid and alone, being rushed to a local hospital with her hands and legs chained in shackles.

Once she reached the hospital, nurses repeatedly begged the Sheriff's staff to allow them to unchain the mother, but they refused and Chacon was forced to give birth while still shackled to the bed. At one point, the nurse asked for them to release her so that she could be escorted to the bathroom for a urinalysis, but even that request was denied. But the worst came once Chacon gave birth to her baby girl.

Still chained to the bed, Arpaio's police staff refused to allow Chacon to hold her newborn baby and then warned her that if no one came to pick up the child within 72 hours, she would be turned over into state custody.

    :(

That shit deserves a special form of punishment. This fuck should be shot in the dick.

Looking for publicity knows no limits, however.
Seagal is currently a deputy sheriff of his home community of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. In November 2008, A&E announced that they have begun filming Steven Seagal: Lawman, a reality show that follows his on- and off-duty work in the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Seagal stated that "I’ve decided to work with A&E on this series now because I believe it’s important to show the nation all the positive work being accomplished here in Louisiana—to see the passion and commitment that comes from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in this post-Katrina environment."[14]

There are two theories as to how complaints about Sheriff Joe are handled.

Fed: Another complaint about Sheriff Joe.

Other Fed: Route it through the proper channels.

Arizona Governor: Another complaint, okay. Protocol says this goes through the DA.

DA: Complaint received. Hey, Joe, how are things in Maricopa?

Joe: We shot eighteen more o' them brown folks today.

DA: Okay, I'll tell the Governor the complaint is completely unfounded.

    Alternately:

Review Board member: Hey, Joe, we got another complaint.

Joe: You're under investigation for resisting arrest, homosexuality, pedophilia, possession with intent to distribute, treason, and dissent.

    Review Board: Nevermind.

Man, Obama is great at faking a smile.

Also, looking through those Joe twit pics, that's like the only one where he's smiling. Even one where he's with a room full of smiling World War II vets. His (non)expression is hilarious.

Well technically, as governor he could strongarm the writing of legislation overturning federal birthright amnesty provisions and impose martial control over the Arizona international border.

The legislation would of course be found unconstitutional, but the matter would most likely get carried to the Supreme Court and therefore take national prominence and force congressmen to take sides over the issue, meanwhile rallying all the ardent anti-immigration supporters to his cause.

Worse case scenario, Arizona legally omits amnesty provisions and Sheriff Joe is a hero. Best case, Sheriff Joe returns to Arizona a defeated martyr and attempts to pass new (barely) legal State immigration statutes with the support of his inflamed grassroots movement and friends in high places.

Joe is interested in two things, and two things only, making you afraid of illegal immigrants, and convincing you that they're responsible for all of society's ills.

He's very good at both those things. In Arizona, this could prove effective enough to get him into the governor's chair.

o_O How's he not rational? He's playing to the bigoted/afraid of illegal immigrants base to keep himself in power, and up to the present (and until at least the next election or the FED actually do something) seems to be working rather well to achieve those ends. That's fairly rational.

No, they won't. The reason is that state and federal executive elections, especially when you have someone running who has national exposure, tend to have a massive spotlight effect on a person's background. I don't think Joe could survive that at all. Furthermore, it's much less likely that he'll be able to bring the attorney general or the state legislature to heel like he has their Maricopa County counterparts, limiting his ability to rule Arizona with an iron fist.

Frankly, I don't think he'd even entertain a gubernatorial run. Joe already has substantial power in state politics as a kingmaker and influential figure, and trying to become governor has a lot of risks for a negligible increase in power and being constrained by bodies that he'd never be able to control like he controls their lower level counterparts now. The risk/reward ratio is too high, I think.

I live in Maricopa County. I vote against Sheriff Joe whenever I get the chance.

I don't know if you guys have discussed this, but even the Goldwater Institute, a conservative think-tank based in Arizona, wants him out of office because even they have a basic respect for the constitution and rule of law.

He's coming to my school (ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication) on Monday, and you bet your ass I'll be there. Supposing there's a question-and-answer session, are there any questions you guys would like me to ask him?

The people who will be questioning him at the event, two of whom are my professors, are really, really talented journalists. I'm sure they'll ask him a lot of tough questions.

The people that I assume hate Sheriff Joe, minorities, young people, and Democrats, turn out in dramatically lower numbers in off year elections. Old white assholes, on the other hand, are pretty good about voting in off-year elections (and at suppressing their opponents' vote), and using absentee ballots when they aren't around.

I know someone from Maricopa County. He fucking HATES Sheriff Joe. Sadly, he's only 1 vote.

Apparently the thinking among the locals is that they should move the elections into the Summer, when most of the old white assholes who love Joe aren't in town.
...and when the people who hate Sheriff Joe won't turn out.

    How so?
The people that I assume hate Sheriff Joe, minorities, young people, and Democrats, turn out in dramatically lower numbers in off year elections. Old white assholes, on the other hand, are pretty good about voting in off-year elections (and at suppressing their opponents' vote), and using absentee ballots when they aren't around.

What do "Off-Year" and "Summer" have to do with one another?

Summer elections don't really help anyone. Your supporters are just as likely to resent you for interrupting their summer/not be around just as much as your opponents' supporters.

Unless I'm completely mistaken, a large portion of his support in Maricopa County comes from retirees and the like who winter in the area, but aren't there year round.

Unless you're proposing moving federal and state elections to the summer too, they are essentially the same thing in terms of voter turnout.

I live there, so that's two. Plus my mom, dad, and brother (who's been in his jail) all hate him and will be voting against him.

His numbers seem to be getting lower with each election, but I'm sure he'll die of old age before he's voted out.
