18.4" laptop accessories

Hey PA,
I just bought this beast of a laptop (TOSHIBA 18.4" Qosmio) and I want to get a laptop cooler and carrying case for it.

Now the reason I'm buying this is because I'm going to Afghanistan soon, and Dragon Age just came out. I don't know my exact living arrangements, but I'm fairly certain I'm not going to have a desk (there may be a common area I can use at though). My plan is to just use this as a laptop, i.e. on my lap for the most part, so I need a cooler that's going to do the job. Also, I'm flying a jet out there, so I need to find a case that will fit in a travel pod and is sturdy enough to take a beating from being crammed in there with all the other crap we'll be carrying. Really the case shouldn't be a problem so long as it would fit in a large duffel bag.

Anyway on newegg where I'm buying the laptop, it doesn't seem like there's any options for a case, and the cooler accessory that most people get with my laptop has mixed reviews. Anyone have some recommendations? Obviously I don't want to spend $100 on each of these, but quality is more important than cost here. And in case it wasn't clear, the cooler is going to have to function on my lap or on a bed.

thanks.

I don't know how you feel about ordering from Canada but www.mec.ca has cheaper, better designed and more durable backpacks, laptop cases and everything than any competitor I've ever seen. I'm really brutal on my gear and I still have a $20 backpack I bought there six years ago, and a laptop case from five years ago. I've travelled everyway you can (nearly) with both and I've never felt any desire to replace either.

I'm using a CRYO LX with my 17 inch Clevo D900F and I can honestly say it's a great cooler. Its quiet, pushes a lot of air, and it fits my 17 inch with a bit of room. It has some sharp edges, and the front folds so I dont know it it will work very well on your lap honestly. I use my laptop as a portable desktop, that is to say I only move it when I change dorms or go to a LAN party, so I cant help you there.

Head on over to Timbuk2 and browse around for a nice laptop bag. They have one designed for 17 inch laptops that fits my MASSICE D900f without any need to cram it in whatsoever. I have to imagine it will work just fine for you too. You could also just get one of their messenger bags to store it, those are quite nice as well!

Good luck out there, odds are I'll be out there pretty soon too!

Most important part of a cooling rest is it has some sort of gap built in to it. I went to Best Buy and almost all of the ones they had were flat on the back and the top which makes them fucking worthless if you're in bed with it on your lap on a blanket. A fan does not airflow make.

Got a Belkin which has a concave top which means the laptop's own fans always have airflow and I can plug in the pad's fan if need be.
