UFC may be better right now...and this is hard for me to say since I've been watching boxing as long as I can remember.

To say UFC is better overall is ridiculous. Boxing has been around forever and there have been some ridiculous fights throughout history that dwarf anything UFC has to offer so far.

by your logic grecco-roman wrestling has been around longer than boxing and has the most history. thus wrestling is better than boxing

    Stop being fatuous.

I'm just saying your arguments are terrible.

and also I like UFC way more than boxing, though to be honest I only pay close attention to Machidas fights, the rest i just watch on and off

it's in the eye of the beholder but i'm articulating why i feel it's special for me and a lot of folks

a lot of fights are cool for me because some of the best always have some sort of crazy stakes to them like muhammed ali fightin' after malcolm x was killed

they're just fleshed out amazing stories for me with spectacular violence attached

UFC very well may have some bad blood between fighters but nothing about the fights has the investment a lot of great boxing matches have for me

that's why i don't really dig ufc that much

and hell, it's why i barely watch boxing anymore

    naw

societal shit is ebb and flow

is ufc big right now? yes

is it culturally signifcant right now, no

i cannot mark big events in history with ufc fights

figures in their fights are not larger than life characters like muhammed ali or joe louis

can that change, sure? but is that happening? hell naw

societal? grecco-roman wrestling has seen the rise and fall of empires, some winners of the classic tournaments were depicted as gods... if that's not larger than life I don't know what is.

and it is still around large enough to inspire this movie

Anjin what do you mean by culturally significant

Like what exactly makes boxing more culturally significant?

joe louis vs max schmeling 1 and 2 was a major event for america and the world because it was our best fighter against max schmeling (a german), a little prior to our involvement in world war two

basically, it was pretty huge for america to consider their best fighter to be a black man and he would symbolize democracy triumphing over fascism

behind the scenes, them cats actually were good friends which also is also telling about athletes and respect for one another

muhammed ali was referred to as cassius clay until he joined the nation of islam and refused to fight in vietnam

he was stripped of his title and he couldn't fight because his license was suspended, but he managed to appeal that shit and was successful in a supreme court ruling

he went on to become a goddamn champion, and he reveled in that shit.

these fights mark important times, and there are even more stories like this the world over. it ain't flash in the pan

forrest griffin stepped out of his cave to discover the wonders of automobiles and electricity

    :( I love Forrest Griffin.

    unfortunately he's not a great fighter :(

i like MMA mainly because of my background in wrestling. i recognize a lot of techniques that the good wrestlers use and, to my, MMA is a little more interesting because the fighters have definitively different styles, which you don't often see in the boxing world.

    except for european boxers.

i dunno, Manny's boxing style is downright weird. or if you believe the HBO announcers (and i can't get past my intense hatred for all of them and their inane comments to actually believe them) he punches "from WEIRD ANGLES THAT YOU DON'T SEE COMING"

well, the ufc is just one organization in a sport. that's like asking how long golden boy productions has been around compared to mma.

the answer would be something like:

    ...you're joking, right?

    The ancient Greeks did mma.

so mma is not pankration because the people who call their sport pancrase prefer a different set of rules?

I would say that MMA more closely resembles pankration than modern boxing resembles the ancient greek equivalent, whatever they called it.
