PS3 Question! Reverse Compatability.

Ok, so my good old PS2 is on its last legs, and I'm looking to upgrade, but I've been told that the new PS3s (IE the only ones they sell now) no longer are reverse compatible. Is this, in fact, the truth? Looking online, I've seen conflicting reports. This would be a game breaker for me, as I play my ps1 and ps2 games all the time still.
Which basically means that no PS3 that is currently in production has PS2-compatibility. It's also very unlikely that any future models will have it. If you happen to find a good-as-new model with backwards compatibility, it will most likely be more expensive than a new PS3 slim ($299) + new PS2 slim ($99).

For as many completed auctions as you can find on eBay at a price like that, I can find more for less than the price of a PS3 slim alone. With even better pricing for the listings I can find on my local Craigslist.

Well... damn. Thanks guys, though I was hoping for better news. >.<

Of course, but those will probably not be good-as-new (which in my opinion is an important factor) and out of warranty. Which is why new MGS bundles etc. go for upwards of $600 on Amazon Marketplace.

Good-as-new is pretty difficult to define and determine based on online listings. Truth is though, there are not a large number of BC PS3s that sell for $400 or more, and those that do are most often listed as being actually new-in-box, not in some state of good-as-new. There are a larger number of used BC PS3s listed as being in great condition and often coming with a 90 day warranty from the seller, that sell for close to, but less than, $300.
I don't believe a Sony warranty is actually an important factor with a PS3 - the reliability on a PS3 is good enough that I would have no problem purchasing one out-of-warranty if it was coming from a trustworthy seller. Paying more than twice as much just to get a warranty on a unit that is not likely to actually require said warranty is rather foolish, imo, especially since to the best of my knowledge Sony does not guarantee actually repairing your actual console if you do have a problem, and I'm fairly certain a warranty repair is more likely to return you a newer, non-BC console these days than actually get your BC system fixed.

Just go for an older PS3 on Ebay or buy a pre-owned one from Gamestop. I fail to see the problem, since you can do everything the PS3 Slims can do and more even, since they paired them down to cut costs. I tore the drive out of my original 60gig and dropped a 250 Gig in there, and haven't looked back since.

any other models do not (including the slim)
Uh-oh I accidentally deleted my signature. Uh-oh!!
Current model PS3s do not play PS2 games - only the older models already listed had BC.
I was talking about PS2 BC
Every ps3 can play ps1 games

I couldn't play the Suikoden series on my Xbox 360, when last I checked.
So... yeah.
