I try to take fun secondary weapons in multiplayer, but using the stinger with scavenger and blowing up every killstreak reward the enemy gets is just to much fun....
This is my favorite thing to do in multiplayer. Oh, you just spent most of the match getting yourself a chopper gunner? *FWOOSH* *BOOM*
This game's complete and utter reliance on connection speed is killing it for me. It's a solid indicator of how lopsided or balanced the game will be by looking at everyone's bars. I know that's not anything new, I just thought I'd bitch about it. It's really taken the fun out of the game knowing I rarely even have a chance.
Is it just me or is this game extremely frustrating for newbies? I never played the first one online and I am finding myself getting killed without a chance.
How is someone who is stuck using iron sights supposed to compete with thermal sights and harrier jets?
For the veterans of Modern Warfare do you have any tips? Currently I am using a UMP45 with holographic cause I managed to level up a bit but I still don't have a pray. I use the thumper for my secondary and have sleight of hand, stopping power and steady aim for my perks.
I am usually lucky if I get a .500 kill to death.
It just seems so unbalanced, but that may just be my years of Halo speaking.

I find the best way to get great games is to make sure you have at least 6 people in your party that live local to you. It's a guarantee that the match will migrate host to one of your party members, then you'll start dominating.

This game is retardedly harsh on newbies. That said, I love iron sights, even IRL. There are far too many useful attachments to limit myself to adding a sight everytime.
Sheesh, I keep editing this. Don't use the SMG as your go to weapon. They're only good on the smaller, enclosed maps. Stick to using assault rifles until you get better at the game. Use the red dot sight and then the ACOG when you unlock it until you get a better feel for the game.
If you're going to use an SMG, use the iron sight and rapid fire. My favourite setup is Lightweight, Marathon and Commando for SMG CQC combat.

Play the 3rd person modes. There's no sight aiming and balances out iron sight and attachment issues. Great way to get attachments for yourself without going 5-20 cause of horrible sights + lack of experience.

Harrier's are killstreak perks. you can only get those if you steal an enemies air drop that has it, a friendly air drop that has it, get an air drop(4 kill streak) that has it, or unlock it and get the killstreak leading up to the harrier itself(7 if I recall). So you're only competing with the fact that your team sucks and let someone get that many kills in a row without dying.
As far as the thermals and other weapons go. It's much better balanced this time around than it was in CoD4. The guns you unlock are actually just more options rather than things that are flat out better. Which was the case in CoD4. The thermals really only give you the benefit of seeing dudes through smoke. That's it. So it's not tough to compete with.
What you need to do is stop thinking about halo entirely when you play this. CoD and Halo have entirely different mechanics, and the keys to winning are completely different. Take things slower, hang behind cover more often, don't run and gun all the time aiming down the sights will do you better than anything, and use your grenades!!! Flash/stun grenades can be the difference between killing an entire room full of dudes, and being turned into swiss cheese.
Just keep at it though really. If this is the first time you're playing a CoD game online, then it's a lot like buying halo 3 today and having never played a halo game before. You got lots of catchin up to do.
I will give the assault rifles a try tonight, is sleight of hand and stopping power a good choice for assault rifles?
Also, how exactly does the mini-map work? Do I show up on it if I run or is it only when I fire a weapon? I wish I could change its location as well, so used to bottom right for radar/mini map.
I hope no one thinks I am complaining, the game is great it is just brutal for me at the moment.

I'm new to the game and rocking a .3 k/d and loving it. Why are you complaining?
Just wondering, how is the match making set up for multiplayer and spec ops on the PC?? I just want to avoid getting this game only to find out half my time is spent finding a game or I'm on forums trying to get a list of people to be on my friends list to play Halo 3 coop for example.
EDIT: Another question, how is the SP and spec ops for replayability? I probably will want to play both SP and spec ops over and over. I heard SP isn't something worth replaying because it's just a bunch of weird vehicle levels/Ooh look what we came up with, instead of a polished series of action packed levels which is what MW1 is.
It seems to depend on where you are in the world. I have almost no problems connecting to a game and there is often little to no lag. I have heard of other people having much difficulty finding a game that isn't laggy or finding a game at all. In general, it seems the the US is pretty well off and anywhere else has some trouble or is totally fucked.
e: In regards to frustration for newbies: Yes. I got so damn frustrated for the first few weeks that I almost regretted buying the game. Then I came back in one day and knew the maps and cleaned house. My k/d is steadily rising from the .8 I started with and carried over from CoD4.

Not really my first few games i did rather well but that could be because of all my other fps practice on pc. I would use an assault rifle with grenade attachment (to replace the thumper) and then have a rocket launcher as your secondary to take out aircraft.

You show up whenever you fire a weapon or the other team has a UAV up and you don't have cold-blooded equipped.

This is my favorite thing to do in multiplayer. Oh, you just spent most of the match getting yourself a chopper gunner? *FWOOSH* *BOOM*
This is why I sneer at all the Cold-Blooded circle jerk posts. Just pack a Stinger. Most enemy killstreak rewards will be dead before they even reach firing position, if you act quickly and anticipate their location based on the radar. UAV's usually will get two pings before its just a puff of smoke and debris. Harriers, Cobras and Hinds will be down in one shot. Pave Lows and Apaches/Hokums are a little sturdier, but they still drop damn fast. This way, you are protecting the entire team, instead of just yourself. Also, you KNOW that on the other end of the intarwebs there is a 13 year old punching himself in the nuts because you just one shotted his hard earned reward. This grants almost as much satisfaction as gunning down someone who uses the Joint Ops tag. I'm always packing the stinger. I should give it a name or something.
Thermal Scopes? Meh. I haven't seen a kill cam of myself through a Thermal Scope yet, so I am not really worried about that.
And I don't carry a Thumper or a Shotgun, because I'm not a bitch.
Also, how exactly does the mini-map work? Do I show up on it if I run or is it only when I fire a weapon? I wish I could change its location as well, so used to bottom right for radar/mini map.

At least you're asking questions. These kinds of games have a steep initial learning curve but if you stick with it you'll get the hang of things and not feel like you're just target practice.
As for the minimap:
If you do not have a silencer you show up for a few seconds when you fire your weapon. I'm guessing you're not playing Hardcore mode, your non-silenced shots will only show up on the minimap if the enemy UAV is up (because otherwise they won't have a mini-map.
If you do not have the Cold Blooded perk you show up the entire time an enemy UAV is in the air.
As for your earlier comment about everyone else having red dot sights, they're great tools but they aren't must-have. I actually almost always play with the regular sights because I usually use the silencer and I don't want to give up Scavenger Pro in order to also have the red dot attachment.
I will give the assault rifles a try tonight, is sleight of hand and stopping power a good choice for assault rifles?

I'd suggest Marathon, Scavenger or Bling instead of Sleight of Hand. I'd say use Sleight of Hand only if you find a weapon you really like that has a long reload time.
It just seems so unbalanced, but that may just be my years of Halo speaking.
Sounds like your good at twitch aiming. Keep stopping power, and pick up either sleight of hand or steady aim. If you notice you're good wih hip fire, you can drop sleight of hand for bling. If you're good with the LT aim, you can drop steady aim for lots of other stuff. Go slowly around corners to check for enemies. I think people like red dot more than holographic, so try going back to that.
Thermal Scopes? Meh. I haven't seen a kill cam of myself through a Thermal Scope yet, so I am not really worried about that.
I think most people get turned off by the amount of zoom on the thermal scope, since it zooms even more than the ACOG and unlike the ACOG the thermal cuts out your peripheral vision.
I do use the thermal scope on my sniping kit, and you non-cold blooded folks do show up as shining beacons of shootability. I can look through the scope and do a quick pass of an area, and if even a little bit of your shoulder is exposed it'll stand out.
On the flipside the thermal scope is a hindrance on the snow maps, at least when the warm blooded enemy is in a snowy area. The scope shows targets as pure white with no way to flip it to black like you can with the AC-130 thermal imaging, so the white targets are really hard to see on the white snow background.
Does anyone else consistently take out UAVs? ...because i certainly do. Having enemy positions in your radar is such a huge advantage.
God yes. Now that I finally unlocked the stinger last night, aint nobody using any form of a kill streak reward when I'm around.
Stinger? Pah! A single mag from a SCAR will destroy a UAV. Those things are weak.
how much do you lead it?
Edit i finally got to try out hte ac130 from a care package. That was amusing but i had no idea what i was doing except for hitting 1,2,3(assuming this swithces between the weapons) and clicking at red boxed mans. Good thing no one fired anything at me because i hadn o idea how to activate flares.

I'd like to do this, but I don't know what to look for in the sky. What do UAVs look like?
Small black plane which flies clockwise around the map about 50 degrees above the horizon. Don't worry about shooting your own team's UAV down because I believe only enemy ones are shown flying around.
Counter-UAVs look exactly the same and can also be shot down.

I'm just saying I won't be taking Cold-Blooded solely on account of a chance of getting matched up against a Sniper with a Thermal Scope.

I try to shoot at the front of it so that it will fly into the bullets path. It's rather easy to take them down.
I was playing a round with a friend and got a bunch of vertical white lines down my screen and the sound flipped out. It keeps doing this every 5 mins or so, had white, green, and red lines so far.
Is this thing about to red ring? Can I send it in right now or do I have to wait for it to completely die?

Any mission that involves communication to snipe more than one target are fantastic. Hidden is going to be... interesting.. on veteran.
I got 3 stars on the snowmobile "race" after a few tries. They seem to drift a heck of a lot more than in the singleplayer.
