Dude, me and another Enforcer from from frickin PERTH. We spend the weekend working our asses off and enjoy every minute of it. IT IS THAT GODDAMN SUPER AWESOME. Seriously man, go, but be warned, if you do go, there is no turning back. You'll be back the next year. And the year after. It's not a once off thing man, you can't go just once. You will meet many amazing people (a lot of which think Australians are awesome) and have a superawesome time. Get in on the community stuff too, that is what I did first year and had a complete blast. These forums, the PAX IRC channel and Twitter are good places to get the best hookups for kick ass PAX shenanigans. I've added you on Xbox Live, hit me up on that or ask on here if you need to know anything more, I'm happy to help. More Aussies at PAX is always a good thing!

In the words of the immortal Molly Meldrum: DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR!

You need to experience PAX, every person who calls themselves a gamer does. It is an event that will change you for the better, especially if you get involved in as many of the community events around it as possible.

Save the money, get the time off (a good couple of weeks at least) and go for it, you won't regret it dude :-).

Yes, but S7arbuck quoted me, which means he has the contents of my post in his post and he's commenting on that, not the thread in general.

    Hi, Bonus.

It might be helpful if someone explains why, exactly, PAX is so awesome. I'll attempt to do that as briefly as I can.

    1) The variety. Every part of gamer culture and beyond is represented at PAX. You want to cosplay? It's there. You into tabletop wargaming? It's there. Pen and paper? It's there. CCGs? They're there. Board games? They're there. Anime? Got it. Collectibles? Got 'em. Merch? Tons of it. Fantasy, steampunk, sci-fi, super heroes, comic books, brawler, rhythm, shooter, racing, puzzle, RPG, MMO, indie, 360, PS3, Wii, DS, hardcore, casual, PvP, PvE, E for Everyone all the way to M for Mature... it's ALL there. Unlike other conventions which focus on a specific aspect of video games or gamer culture, PAX covers everything and then some. No matter what you're into, you'll find something that will blow you away at PAX.

    2) The value. PAX isn't a convention. It isn't an expo. It isn't a party. It isn't a forum. It's all these things combined. The amount of things to do at PAX is staggering. Overwhelming, even. At any given minute during PAX there's probably 2-3 panels you could be attending, at least one tournament you could be participating in, some kind of community event happening; and this is all set against and in addition to the constant presence of the expo hall (which rivals E3) and the console, tabletop, and portable freeplay, all of which are going throughout the entire duration of the weekend. Then factor in the 8 Omegathon rounds, movie nights, and the 2 nights of concerts. For the price of the ticket, you aren't going to find this amount of stuff to do anywhere else. It's practically a theme park.

    3) The people. This is both the most important and the least publicized part of PAX. The people there are the best people you'll ever meet. I've made lifelong friends at PAX who I've driven hours to see outside of the expo. At any given time you can strike up a conversation with the people around you, and 99% of the time you'll have a blast. People are nice, enthusiastic, mature, and fun. Everyone has common interests. For blocks in all directions surrounding the convention center the streets, restaurants, and stores are packed with PAX people, and all of them are your friends even if you don't know it yet. The streets are lined with PAX banners, some of which say "Welcome Home." It really does feel like home if you're a gamer. You don't feel weird, awkward, or ostracized in any way. You feel at home.

    4) The community. If you choose to get involved, the PAX forums community can take your PAX experience to a whole other level. There are tons of events before, during, and after PAX, organized, attended, and funded by the regulars who hang out on this forum. Events range from a sightseeing tour a few days before PAX, to a button or trading card exchange during, to a huge afterparty on Sunday. There's scavenger hunts, parties, tournaments, organized meetups, etc. Attendance at these events ranges anywhere from a dozen to over a hundred, and they're all awesome. Before I got involved with the forum community, I had a blast. After I got involved, I had the best time of my life. I compare it to playing a MMO like WoW or EVE without a guild, and then playing with a really good guild.

I hope this helps, and allow me to echo the sentiments of the other forum-goers above when I say: DO IT NOW.

It was so cold that the flames froze in the lanterns, and your words would freeze in the air as soon as you spoke them! It was so cold that even the snow turned blue! It was so cold that cold was like: "Damn, that's cold!"

Oh wait, that's a different thing altogether... [ahem]

PAX was so fun that you had to wait three weeks for the smile to leave your face, and you had a good chance of becoming diabetic because pax was just that sweet. PAX was so good, that some people suddenly died on the show floor because their lives were complete, and there was nothing left for them to do that could possibly top being at PAX.

yeah, pax is probably the greatest video game expo of all time. You should go if you can afford it.

You've probably been convinced by now, and CuZZa makes a good argument (especially being that he comes all the way from Perth).

So, all I will say is: YOU NEED TO COME TO PAX AND YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

And also, WHEN you come, sign up for the Magical Mystery Tour, it's the pre-PAX tour of Seattle, and you will meet some great people and have an awesome time, before PAX even starts!!!!!

Very simply: PAX is only as good as the friends you bring with you. Bring a handful of like-minded, fun-loving friends and you'll be hard-pressed to find another event anywhere in the world that's as fun as PAX. However, if you come by yourself, and you're not a very social person, the only difference between going to PAX and staying home is several hundred dollars (or in your case, several thousand).

I think the implied "secret option 3" is "come to PAX by yourself and meet a bunch of new people to hang out with"

If you're talking about PAX Prime, then (and I'm surprised Arco hasn't pimped this option) instead of just spending 12 hours on a plane to Seattle you should spend 12 hours on a plane to Los Angeles and then spend 36 hours on a train to Seattle, with dozens of like-minded PAXers.

PAX is amazing. Me and LewieP went last year and had an amazing time (yes, I am his mummy irl). We did all the pre-PAx events and met some fab people, saw lots of Seattle, went to panels, played games, just had a blast. I'm saving up for PAX East in March, its 2 flights for us - Manchester UK to London, London to Boston, we'll be travelling for about 13 hours each way, it will cost about £1500 in total, but is so worth it.

Aye, I'll second all of this above. It's really the only time that you can see an entire town suddenly transform into a place where you can casually strike up conversations with people on the streets about gaming, programming, tabletop, funky tools, card games... anything. PAX isn't really so much about the convention itself at this point, as much as it is what it does to the city around it. For a weekend (and several days before), the city turns into our city: the city for people with interests similar to ours.

The key is to really embrace it and get in on that aspect of it. Go to pre-PAX events, meet people, have fun, be open minded, and don't be afraid to say hello to people. You can tell who's with us. =) In '08, we pretty much dominated downtown Seattle. This last year we had some incursions from some football fans, but the town was probably 95% ours. =) That's really the epic part about PAX, more than anything you get to see or play there. It's really about feeling at home in a place where people usually wouldn't feel that way.

EDIT: Ah, excellent! Glad to see you're coming! It's going to be a blast! Keep your eye on the forums here and join in on conversations! You'll find all sorts of fun things to do around PAX! =)

QFT. That is what I did my first year and I believe I was quoted the morning of PAX saying "The convention centre could burn to the ground and the expo not happen and I *still* would have had the best time of my life because of you guys and the pre-PAX events."

But then the expo started and the weekend got even better.

I'll make sure you come, if you don't want to travel alone you could always meet up with Macca and I in Sydney and fly over with us. Down Under Super Trip! I almost have another Perthie convinced but she is going to SDCC so will probably stay there the month til PAX starts.

If you want something, why not take it? Or, worse yet, you can miss the event and leave your curiousity murdering you FOREVER.

You will not regret travelling to Seattle for PAX but you may want to consider making it part of a larger trip to America/Canada. Make a week of it.

All that money and effort seems a bit overkill for a three day convention, even if it is the best one

Should have posted in this thread along time ago, but I do have a little story. In September at PAX I arrived without my bags. I had my phone and my carry-on. I sat in the lobby of the Sheraton, couldn't get in touch with anyone I was rooming with, and couldn't even get in the room for a shower.

I tweeted that I was there and that I was looking for someone to hang out with. Literally thirty seconds later, a girl and a guy walked up to me and said they'd seen my tweet and had come to keep me company. We went shopping for some fresh clothes and lunch. I don't think that could have happened anywhere else.

Oh, also? The CCST is highly recommended. I did it in 08 and Cuzza did it in 09, and it's thoroughly brilliant.

I think you got your resounding "GO!" answer. I can't really add much other than to voice my agreement with everything already said.

I can also tell you I was very skeptical at first. The first year, my friend wanted to go, but I didn't think it was worth it. The second year rolled around and I was feeling the need for a vacation with the guys, so I figured why not? Seattle is home to some cool grunge bands I like. :) And so we went. And it really does change you. So we went back the following two years in a row. Skipped '08 because I was poor (and I regret it now) and went this year. It's become pretty much a ritual for us now, and we live half way across the country. We've flown and drove there with the CCST, and no matter how you get there, you will find people joining in your journey. Even when we flew, at O'Hare airport in Chicago, waiting for the red-eye flight at the terminal, there were an unusual amount of DSes and PA shirts.

4 trips later, I went from having no real reason to go, to finding it difficult not to go. As someone mentioned earlier, the banners on the streets around the convention hall that say Welcome Home almost bring a tear to your eye. You can feel the warmth of 50,000 friends before you even see the convention center. And you really do feel like you're home.
