I can understand why some of you guys don't like the DLC. I like the Moxxi DLC because in Borderlands, I like to shoot stuff. Sure, I like looting stuff too, but who cares if you get a powerful new gun if it's not fun to use. The Mad Moxxi DLC is all about the combat. Yes, every wave comes in the same order (starter-gun-horde-badass-boss), but you can get a badass wave that is all skags... or skag + bandits... or all crimson lance. I even got a badass wave that was skags and eridians (never seen them fight each other before). I do think they should used every enemy (especially zombies... speedy zombie horde wave :winky:) or even added some new enemies.

The modifiers that turn on really mix things up. When was the last time you were afraid of the badass melee bandit? You know, the one where you just wait till he stops to swing, you take a step back and he misses completely. Imagine that guy with double speed/double swing speed. He runs faster than you can sprint, and he will actually hit you with a melee if he gets close. You actually have to time your shots to stun him, jump off of objects, and use your skills so you don't get hit. There is a modifier that raises your damage, but lowers your accuracy. This forces you to fight closer to the enemies than you normally do. Not all modifiers are bad either. Low gravity, increased element damage, and increased damage on specific weapon types all help you out.

I like how each arena provides different combat situations. Hell-burbia is kind of like old haven, the eridan place is more open space fighting, and the gully has more vertical fighting (it even has a teleporter at the top+bottom). I would have taken a 4th arena over a bank. I don't see the point in storing a gun when you have 42+ inventory spots... why keep a gun you are never going to use.

This DLC isn't for everyone. You only get a small amount of loot compared to the time you put in. Then again any DLC they come up with will have a tiny amount of loot compared to new haven chest runs or even crimson fast runs. You won't level up if you go in with your non-50s. If you have the overwhelming urge to 100% everything in a game, but don't have the time for the larger arenas, you will be frustrated. For me, this DLC was just what I wanted, something challenging to do with my level 50s.

this is why i'm getting it. i like the combat in borderlands, and i really enjoyed the combat arenas in the main game. and with an ammo-regen soldier with some rather overpowered weapons, it should finally prove a challenge. :)

I love the idea of a challenge, but I dislike the inability to 'pause' the action in a multiplayer game, or any sort of intermissions. I have a 4 year-old, I hate that this entire DLC is pretty much on the backburner until she's asleep for the night.

You don't even need the ammo regen. After each wave a ton of large ammo containers drop all over the place. Solo, I didn't have to worry about ammo and I would only grab one of these every 3 waves or so.

I haven't played it much online, but when playing solo I died on round 5 and was able to continue at the start of round 4. If you can do this online, you could use this as a large, unplanned break. Now that I think about it, there is a scoreboard at the end of every round. I remember thinking you have to hit "a" to continue, you might be able to use this as a breakpoint too. Has anyone tried this yet?

Every 4-man set needs a high ammo-regen soldier in the Medic skill tree... I know in the 3-man team I play with, I tend to shoot my teammates to heal them more than I shoot enemies it seems.

So I just picked up Borderlands and the Broken Steel/Point Lookout pack for Fallout 3. Currently Borderlands is sitting on my desk staring at me instead of being installed.

Keeping in mind my goal is to actually play through the new content in the Fallout 3 addons once I'm done getting a character through the main plotline (stupid losing my save games) am I correct in choosing to leave Borderlands uninstalled lest I completely abandon the Fallout 3 content in favor of constantly playing Borderlands?

So the first trip to 50 I did as Brick, playing with a buddy who was a siren. I had a blast with Brick for the first 35 levels or so, but he seemed to taper off at the end in terms of usefulness.

This time, I went to 50 as a soldier with a buddy that was a hunter. I've been lukewarm to the soldier for the most part, mainly because his action skill is so terrible. But after level 40, once I found a good machine gun with a 2x scope, holy hell. There is no way for my hunter buddy to keep up with me, and he's certainly the better shooter player between the two of us. He's tried bird spec, pistol spec, and sniper spec, and he's got better weapons than my machine gun in terms of level/rarity, but it's just no contest.

The only problem is that I burn though ammo, but I've got a decent support gunner mod I can switch to, and I found a nice combat rifle that regens ammo, so I run around with that thing when I'm not using my machine gun.

But besides the ammo issues, my soldier has pretty much turned into a walking harbinger of death.

I'm not really sure I can believe that. A lvl 50 trespass gunslinger with the right mod and a lvl 48 shotgun revolver deals thousands of damage per non-crit shot and increases damage and firing rate dramatically after the first kill to the point where you're essentially firing a highly accurate shotgun at machine gun speeds with a high % chance of pumping out 2 bullets per trigger pull. I've seen Sirens match that, I've seen hacked machineguns match that...but a vanilla Soldier? Your Hunter buddy needs to shape up.

He certainly doesn't have a level 48 revolver. We just hit 50 about 2/3 of the way through playthrough 2. The weapons we've got are about in the 40/orange to 43/green range. I think it's probable that he'll scale better into higher weapons because scoped machine guns are very hard to find in my experience, and the one I've got is a good one right around my level. It's very likely I'll be using this gun for a while, whereas he'll be finding better and better higher-level weapons that will be just as useful for him.

And as an aside, I've found trespass to be wildly overrated. It's probably a godsend if all anyone plays is the final part of the game, but for the other 95% of the game, at least half the mobs don't even have shields, and the ones that do have such terribly weak shields that it takes one or two hits from pretty much any weapon to take those shields down.

Yeah, the gameplay in FO3 was a little jarring to go back to after playing MW2 constatnly but once you get the related weapon skill up there it's almost like playing an actual shooter.

That's another reason I kind of want to finish off the packs for FO3. Readjusting to it's mechanics once was jarring enough

So I finally found time to play the Mad Moxxi DLC with a friend of mine.

For once we are both running into challenges and I love the fact that we are constantly having to change out our weapons and shields based on the modifiers and what spawns. Not to mention changing our tactics quite a bit.

Naked (no shield) and Vampire modifiers made for a fun wave of run and gun while we try not to run out of health.

I can see myself spending a lot of time with this DLC. Probably not near as much fun if you are going at it solo though.

In case it hasn't been mentioned, someone on the gearbox forums came up with a way to artificially increase the number of players to up the difficulty for the PC version:
    http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=89118

It worked incredibly well when I tried it solo earlier with my Siren with players set to 3. I was overleveled for Krom's Canyon so the quest read Trivial, and yet it ended up being one hell of an epic hit and run fight with the increased difficulty. I also did a Lost Cave run in playthrough 2.5 coop with Curly Haired Boy with players set to 4 and it was also an awesome challenge for us.

My one big problem with Borderlands up until now was that it ends up being way too easy when you overlevel by doing all the quests. This app has made it fun and challenging again for me. I can't recommend it enough for anyone looking for an extra challenge. :^:

I loved how they had this epic setup for the fight against the Crimson Lance Paladin, then a few seconds later it was all over already.

If I had to chose which DLC to play first, would you suggest Moxxi or Dr. Ned? We're currently level 34 and still on our first playthrough, but I suspect we're reaching the end soon.

    This.

The new DLC ties you and your party down for uninterrupted multi-hour stretches of what quickly becomes repetitive gameplay. If something comes up that demands your attention, or the host has to go, then you're shit out of luck, and have to start over from Round 1 when you manage to get everyone online again.

Granted, Bungie did the same with the Endure vidmaster challenge in ODST, but you only had to complete it once, not three sodding times.

Just finished Dr. Ned last night, and while it got way too reminiscent of Left 4 Dead in the last couple of missions (thank goodness for the incendiary rocket launcher I had lying around!), as a whole it was a great add-on. So, what's the overall consensus for Mad Moxxi? While I like the idea of a bank to keep some of the more interesting weapons I come across without cluttering up my inventory, the knocks against the general length are making me think twice. Should I wait until it goes on sale?

On a related note, I voted Borderlands my number one game this year on the GOTY thread. Seriously, color me pleasantly surprised about this one; it wasn't even on my radar until I saw how much raving it was getting here, and everything about it just clicked with me. Gearbox deserves all the praise it's been getting for this.

I voted Borderlands my #1 as well. For four reasons:

    1) It's a new IP (I always give new IPs 'bonus points' over sequels)
    2) It's all about co-op (which is something that seems to be increasingly rare nowadays)
    3) It's stylish
    4) It's really fun. (not that I'd vote a game #1 if it wasn't fun :P)

Do you think so? If anything, I get the idea that coop, online in particular, has become the trend in gaming of the last few years, with titles like Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Halo 3, Army of Two 1 & 2, Dawn of War 2, Command & Conquer 3, Little Big Planet or New Super Mario Brothers Wii.

Have you played any of the horde, survivor, firefight (or whatever ODST one is called), etc modes? Also, are you playing solo or do you play Co-op?

None of the kill the never-ending bad guy modes seem that entertaining in single player but I had a blast in Co-op.

Also I actually like the lack of drops. You don't really have time to run around and collect what might have been dropped and the loot at the end of each round feels like Moxxi opens a chest and drops the contents. She was nice enough to drop a Pestilent Defiler for me last night.

Also, Moxxi actually makes you think a little and use strategies.

Eh, I still think so. I should have specified games that have been design for co-op as opposed to games that have co-op.

ie: Borderlands, L4D, LBP, Army of Two, and well many Wii titles in general are design for co-op.

Halo, DoW2, C&C3, and others have co-op and it can certainly be fun no doubt, but it's just not quite the same in my mind. Take Halo(1) for example, it had co-op, but you missed out on a few cut scenes/story elements. I can't remember if Halo 3 was the same way as well, but I don't quite think so. Or take Fable 2, it had co-op too, but it was hardly ideal.

That's sort of my mindset if my ramblings make any sense to ya.

edit- I should point out that I don't think those games shouldn't have included co-op or that their co-op sucks (though in the case of Fable 2 I would probably say that it does).
