Fluid de Transmission

So I need more transmission fluid but I'm too broke to get it changed at a garage ($150?! Are you fucking kidding me?)

So I'm wondering how BAD of an idea is it to mix transmission fluid?

You mean just topping it up? It's fine, just check to make sure the existing fluid isn't horribly gross, it should be fairly light colored, if it's dark then you need to flush it and put new fluid in.

That $150 is for a full system flush, not just topping it off.

"Mixing" transmission fluid, like grade-wise, can be problematic... but your owner's manual should tell you which type to buy.

Topping it off is normal (and wise). Just make sure it's not dark brown looking.

Are you getting dealer prices and/or local shops?

Prices differ and you can shop around for different prices on flushes.

I would hate for you to have to buy a new transmission do to lack of changing your fluid every such and such miles.

As long as it's full and not dark in color, it should be fine. I would check it regularly though.

Are you saying you need it because you've gone 60k miles?

Yeah pretty much as long as it's not all sludgy,

    Check your documentation.

Ideally you should flush it but the situation isn't quite as dire as it is with oil or brake fluid. You can top it off without much risk. Transmission fluid is a longer term problem; eventually it will destroy the transmission but eventually means like hundreds of thousands of miles as opposed to engine oil which becomes a dangerous problem somewhere between ten thousand and twenty thousand miles (unless you're bleeding it in which case it becomes more like... ten miles).

Brakes on the other hand are serious business, you do not casually top off a brake reservoir once it's down to the pipe... air is compressible. In brakes, compressible is bad.
